“Not that great”
Reviewed December 15, 2013

The Palace of the University has some impressive rooms and the building is mainly 17th and 18th century. Given that the University dates from the 13 century I mistakenly thought that there might be a bit more history. Most of the faculty buildings seem 50s and 60s flat boring. Compared to other places like Evora, I felt that it wasn't as fantastic as the reviews make out.

“Capela de S. Miguel”
Reviewed September 13, 2013

The other aesthetic wonder of the University is the Chapel of St Michael, near by the library, which is glorious. The entrance is lovely too.

Apart from those, you've got some steps to negotiate.

On the other side of the chapel, and down a few steps, there's the academic prison. There's not much to see there, actually. The main interest is that it still exists. Many universities must at one time have had them (with their own laws and courts), just as the church did and the army still does, but they've disappeared. George Buchanan, the great Scottish renaissance Latinist, poet, and teacher of Montaigne, was once incarcerated in Coimbra (supposedly on suspicion of heresy), but that would have been in an earlier structure than the one we see now.

And in another block, up some stairs, there's a room for the arms that students carry at certain ceremonies, the university great hall, lined with royal portraits, and a "private examination room" with marvellous tiles and portraits of past rectors.

“Beautifully located, old university”
Reviewed August 17, 2013

Probably the best situated university in the world, on a (steep) hill, overlooking Coimbra, the river and surrounding country site.

The library is a gem, the rest of the buildings are definitely worth visiting.

“A must when travelling in Portugal!”
Reviewed August 13, 2013

The view from the inner square is beautiful, the grandeur of the entire campus impressive. Very much worth the visit.
From the main wing you can see the terrace of the nearby Museum, which offers a fresh and tasty lunch buffet!

“a beautiful university setting”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

Grand buildings on a grand square with grand views over the beautiful city of Coimbra. It is best on a visit to this city to start up high and walk down to the other sites.
