We visited the Roman Cryptoporticum below the museum and enjoyed a snack and drinks on their more than lovely terrace with great rooftop views. You can reach the bar without buying a ticket to the museum. Hidden gem!

The "Criptopórtico" it's amazing. And the museum collection very beautifull. After being closed for 10 years, finally one of the best museums in Portugal opens with a great renovation work and an amazing collection (from sculpture to painting, through furniture, ceramics, jewelry...). Loved it!

This museum was brilliant. Its right in the centre of Coimbra, close by to the university. Its been recently modernised and provides a vast array of artefacts.

We started off in the underground Roman ruins, which are some of the best reserved ruins in Europe. It was great to go nosing around where people lived and learning about how the city functioned.

There is then rooms devoted to Portuguese artists, sculptors and religious artefacts. There is an amazing room full of bas reliefs and other pieces of sculpture that is topped off by the altar of a local church. The church was being left in a state of decay, so they painstakingly took it part and put it back together in the museum. Its stunning.

The museum cafe is good value and has great views over looking the city and the Se Velha in particular.

I couldn't recommend this place more.

Tip: its free on Sunday.

This museum is a little jewel. The Roman ruins are amazing but the artworks in the upper floors are truly priceless. It is one of the most perfect and satisfying museums I have even been to. Whatever else you do in Coimbra, do not miss out on this one!!

This is one of the best museums I have seen in recent times, built over what was once the Roman forum. The modern building is of an outstanding design, unobtrusive yet offering amazing and surprising vistas of artefacts as one wonders around. There are pictures, sculpture, fine art, archeology and religious objects from antiquity to the modern age displayed in a pleasing an informative manner, with outstanding and very well written English as well a Portuguese descriptions. The subterranean Roman foundations are particularly memorable. Definitely worth a visit!
