“Don't miss this marvelous library”
Reviewed December 29, 2013

We found ourselves at the University and weren't going to even tour the library, but so glad we purchased a ticket. We just made the last tour of the day to see it and surrounding buildings. This very special 500 year old library, with its ornate bookshelves, painted ceiling and books that appear to be hundreds of years old, is marvelous. Definitely a highlight of Coimbra and worth the walk up to the University.

“The 500-years-smell of the precious books is like good old wine.”
Reviewed November 30, 2013

An important point in our tour was Coimbra University.
Coimbra is Portugal's old capital of the kingdom. The university of Coimbra is the oldest library containing about 300,000 books. Tour in the library really highlights the strength of the time. The very special smell of old books with Gold colored titles, and "do not touch or approach" of course when your're inside. In this magnificent Library there are also detention rooms used to punish the persons who has not returned books on time ... (Where is education today) and for those who made trouble and took without permission ( robbed as a matter of fact) or misbehaved. they found themselves in prison of the University.
Once, during those days, these institutions were much more autonomous than today and people honored them much more.

“Magnificient Library”
Reviewed November 25, 2013

If you visit Coimbra (Hell! If you visit Portugal!!), you should pay a visit to this Library. The atmosphere is unique and the amount of book rarities make one fell very small.

You should be aware that it's not a big building and you can't touch the books. Also, there is no place to sit down. Still, well worth the visit.

“Exquisite library”
Reviewed November 21, 2013

We found our visit to the Biblioteca Joanina to be very easy. We only waited a few minutes until our timed tour began. It was disappointing that we could not use our cameras, even without flash. There was so much history in that exquisitely decorated library, that we wanted to linger longer. The highlight of our visit to Coimbra!
