Reached after tough walk up from the main street, but the effort paid off. Magnificent, fantastic, the top of our trip to Coimbra, pity that you can spend there only 20min and photos are not allowed. Absolutely recommended

It is very beautiful and has a lot of books. I wish I had so many books, but People in Coimbra and at University aren´t very friendly and I got a litlle frustrated, there were no explanations and you can only seee books at a distance, you can not touch them.
There are a lot of students walking by.
It´s very difficult to find taxis.

A beautiful baroque library (with a prison below?) with beautiful chinoiserie cabinets. Only a certain number of visitors at one time. The only problem: why do they not allow photographs (without flash)???

The whole university itself is a must-see. The Pátio dos Estudantes keeps the essence of the place and this is where we, as tourists, are allowed to get closer. Buy the ticket at the Central Library and then go through the Iron Gate to have access to the four main sights: San Miguel Chapel (the Virgen of the Students and the adapted organ), The Joanina Library and the Academic Prison (plus the Minerva stairs) and the Capelos Room. The Joanina Library is stunning: the oldest book dates back to 1523 and they are all kept inside security gates in amazing wooden cupboards covered in gold. The books are huge and thick- the idea of being really old is noticiable. A group of visitor are allowed every 20 minutes. Then you follow to the academic prison, downstairs, where misbehaved students would actually be held for some time in tiny empty rooms. After being released they would go up the Minerva stairs, where they would be forgiven.

Looking at old books a true fun for books lovers. But not a word of explanation in English so better to take a guided tour there.
