Totally worth visiting, considered one of the most beautiful libraries in the world. Try to see the tiny rooms were the professors prepared their classes.

If you only visit one sight in Coimbra, make sure it is the Joanina library - the Baroque library of the University of Coimbra, according to some one of the most ornate libraries in the world - built in the 18th century during the reign of the Portuguese King João V (and named after him).
What is most striking about this library is that its 250,000 volumes are so well preserved thanks to its 2 metre thick walls which keep the temperature to a constant 18-20 degrees. The shelves are made of oak wood, which is famous for being unappealing to bugs. And where the oak fails, they have a small team of 5 bats, who during the day live behind the painting in the picture and during the night come out to eat any insects (which would otherwise eat the books).
You can only visit by guided tour.

I visite here at 2005. But still, I remember have much I liked here. Athmosphere, ticketing system (you have to visit here by rendez-vous hour), especially many historical, important books. Guide explain to us interesting informations.
And I can't forget books smell.
If you are in this city, you have to go absolutely there.
If you have a more time, to the small parc who show symbolic traditionals buildings (about other Portugaise countries) for childrens.

It's a must see. The University is gorgeous and its library is well worth the stop. Rather amazing stuff, and be aware -- no photos allowed in the Library. The library prison and the bat colony complete the magic and weirdness of the place.
