I was approached by a student outside the university who asked where I was from, obviously I was looking like a lost tourist :o). If that student never spoke to me I'd never had known that so many university buildings were open for visitors. Just seven Euro will buy you a ticket to enter half a dozen beautiful buildings including the universities amazing library and chapel. Lots of wow factor here! One or two buildings are closed just now but the ticket price of seven euro is still well worth it.

The library has been lovingly maintained over the centuries. Get up close and read the book titles: medicine, philosophy, history, annals from the monasteries, etc. You'll need a timed ticket, but on week days, entrance was immediate. The view of the river from right in front of the library was impressive.

When I entered Biblioteca Joanina I had a feeling of déjà vu: Stift Melk library in Austria looks pretty much the same – ceiling frescos, dark wood shelves covering the walls and a spirit of intellectual treasury. A very friendly official confirmed my observation, explaining that King João V, during whose reign the library was built, was married to Maria Anna of Austria, and he was greatly impressed by Melk Abbey which was built at the same time. Stunning place! It must be most rewarding to be able to work in this shrine, to touch old manuscripts, to learn from these ancient books. It’s well worth a visit from Lisbon or whatever place you’re staying in Portugal.

We saw the library that is considered as the most beautiful library in the world. The library was started in 1717 during the reign of Joao V. The decoration is impressive. Our guide told us that the library has bats that are hidden around the furniture and that they eat the worms that attack the wood. That was a very interesting thing to learn.

I believe this was the fanciest library I have ever b/seen, golden shelves, old leather covered books, baroque ornaments... With all its aesthetic power, this place makes you to feel doubtful about the digital technology.

The ticket office is located just outside the square and while waiting for the entry time to the library (which is scheduled and certain number of people at a time is allowed), you can spend your time visiting the university building currently facilitating as a Law Faculty and also visiting the church.
