We selected this hotel for its price range and proximity to both the train station and the old city leading up to the university. It served our purposes well on both counts. We originally booked a “standard’ room, but the desk clerk suggested we consider an upgrade to “superior” and provided us the keys to one room of each. Even by European standards, the standard room looked very small to us; we found the superior room to be far more comfortable. While we we not provided a free upgrade, we agreed to pay the additional €25 per night that was offered; on their web site, the difference is €45/night, so I was okay with splitting the difference-- and it still came in under €100 in early March. All in all, an excellent value. The upper floor superior rooms offer wonderful views toward the university, and since the street in front is busy, I suspect it was quieter up top.
The staff was professional at all times, and their assistance with directions and for obtaining tickets to a Coimbra Fado show was very helpful. The Oslo is located in an area that is hardly fashionable, although safely is not an issue. You must walk a few minutes to reach desirable shopping, dining or sightseeing areas, but we had no trouble doing so, and for our purposes, the Hotel Oslo worked quite well. We would happily stay there again.
