All fantastic, the hotel is beautiful, the room amazing and the gardens are very romantic. Staff very nice too. I definitely recommend it, all except the restaurant, you can read my review and don't go there!

The hotel is admittedly tucked away in its own little world, but what a brilliant little corner it is! The breakfast is lovely, dinner fantastic, the staff amazing and the building is beautiful. The bathroom could use a slight overhaul (cracked toilet and tiles) but the water pressure is good and the room spacious. I did have huge issues with the internet but all in all, when can i come back...

We stayed one night at Quinta das Lagrimas, which is a former palace on the outskirts of Coimbra. The property was clearly quite special at one point, but judging from our rooms, service and breakfast suffers from a lack of funding and attention to detail. Perhaps they are trying to do too many things; as the hotel includes a small golfing facility, conference center, etc. There is a modern wing; we specifically requested (and received) a room in the old palace. The first room they showed us was in the basement--not charming; very tired decor. They did move us to a first floor room that was marginally better but not up to billing, nor was it good value for $$ spent.
We did not eat dinner there but found breakfast to be adequate, but nothing special. The modern breakfast room needs updating. Given the distance from the charming town of Coimbra, I'd recommend staying in town instead.

Very simply this hotel is so much more interesting and unique than most. The out back garden really caught my eye with its historic spring and pond. The restaurant is exceptional (and expensive) along with the other unique features you'd expect in an old palace. Our room was basic and nice upstairs. Would stay here again.

We stayed for one night there in December and left with mixed feelings. The hotel is antique and full of history on one side and modern and a little bit kitsch on the other side. Both areas need a better maintenance. Even tough it is very ellegant, you can see mould on the walls and the doors do not close properly. The property is definetly a wonderful place with a very nice garden were Ines de Castro and D Pedro lived their love story - "Fonte das Lagrimas". Breakfast is very good and has a good variety of options. The restaurant "Arcadas" has a star in the Michelin guide and although the food was good it was nothing to write home about. And it is very expensive!
Overall a good experience.

Room Tip: Chose a room in the old area

It is an old palace, converted into a hotel with a new wing. We were given the room (suite)which had French doors opening onto a small terrace and fenced garden. The room looked old but it had a feel of being lived in and was very comfortable. The bathroom also looks pretty old but all amenities work, so it was an interesting experience.

The breakfast by the swimming pool was pretty average as the expectation from a heritage hotel was more

I would like to go back, if only I get a good deal as there may be better modern hotels for a better price as the heritage factor has not been maintained.

We had a ‘palace room’ which was a large room with a big bathroom and traditional décor. It was well equipped and clean. The only slight disadvantage was that it was on the ground floor and on a main corridor (not far from reception) with a lot of people walking past and talking after we’d gone to bed.
The hotel is out of town centre but a short 10-15 minute walk across the river to restaurants and the town centre; and the yellow bus tour has a stop just outside the hotel.
There is a nice outdoor pool, which was a good size, nice temperature and very clean.
The building is an old quinta, and has some very ornate rooms and even a chapel. We enjoyed wandering through the public rooms, some of which contained an incredible selection of old books in a variety of languages (we saw old books in english, spanish, potuguese, french & probably many others) covering a range of topics (science, engineering, medicine, all sorts of subjects)… we could have spent a long time looking at them if we’d been staying longer.
Breakfast was very good – with good quality and selection relative to the size of the hotel.
We also had a very nice salad lunch in the poolside restaurant (where breakfast was also served) on the day we arrived.
We didn’t try the main restaurant during our two night stay … I’m sure it’s very nice, but we really prefer plainer food. However, we did have an excellent meal in the bar one evening (soup and then the ‘risotto of the day’). On the other evening, we went to a restaurant just across the river.
