Hotel Quinta das Lagrimas

We had suite 60. It is nice, but... (1) actually it is not very convenient to go up and down steep stairs to your bedroom; (2) please, please change that awful big white sink (wash-bowl) - it looks nice, but it is absolutely unusable; (3) you have a Michelin star restaurant and it is really great, but what about breakfast?! Breakfast is almost awful (except for the selection of cheeses - it was a very nice touch)! On the other hand, the room service was great. I know that the gates are part of your historic heritage, but may be you can widen them at least by a couple of inches? The park is really really beautiful. The staff is very welcoming and friendly as practically anywhere in Portugal. The hotel is NOT in the center of the city! It was absolutely OK for us, but it may not be the same for everyone.

This is an interesting property, but very much a mixed bag. As some of the other reviewers have said, there are almost two hotels, the palace and the spa wing. We were in the spa wing. The rooms are on the small side and the amentias are a little limited. In order to get anywhere, there is a bit of a hike and at night, the lights are motion activated and are not always timely so you are in the dark in places.

The staff is very helpful and accommodating, but the bar area is set up for groups of two only. In order to make our group of 10 comfortable, we had to sit in the interior patio and drag furniture around. That said, the mushroom risotto I had in the bar was beyond delicious, it ranked up there with the best I have ever had. The breakfast was quite good and in sufficient variety to please everyone. The grounds are interesting and the location is good for walks into town. I might stay here again, or look for a hotel that was a little more consistent. All in all, however, not bad.

When we booked we asked for a Palace Room and we did get one with views from four windows on two sides of the building, but for a 4 star hotel I was a little disappointed in the room as it certainly needed a facelift and the bathroom should be remodeled. I don’t think anything was upgraded since it was turned into a hotel in the late 90’s, however it is clean and tidy. The bed was comfortable and there were extra pillows.

The hotel has a very old garden with a beautiful Ficus tree and Sequoia but many of the ponds are desperately in need of some TLC as the algae has taken over the neglected water features.

The restaurant was a bit of a disappointment for a Michelin star and the only one on the trip that had a 6 Euro per person cover charge; we had better luck with food in town. The breakfast room is in the ‘new’ wing and is a little like a cafeteria in styling and atmosphere.

Although the hotel is across the river from downtown Coimbra it is very close on foot so you can leave the car at the hotel and walk over. There are two options for you, besides the vehicle bridge that brings your right straight into town you can also take the pedestrian bridge which I recommend to take at night when it is all lit up with colourful lights. To get to it, walk left from the hotel driveway and at the first road beside the apartment building take a right and follow the driveway to the underpass; once on the other side of the road you’ll be able to see the bridge quite clearly. After crossing the river the main part of town is to your left about a 10-minute walk.

Hotel Quinta das Lagrimas has a lot of history and once must have been a fabulous place as a country house, but I imagine the cost of upkeep and staff to take care of is taking its toll on the manor home.

Room Tip: Ask for a Palace Room.

Quinta das Lagrimas has been consistently ranked by travel guides as the best (and more expensive) hotel in Coimbra. Part of its reputation is however, due to its gastronomic restaurant.

The hotel is placed in a historic quinta placed were major events of the tragic history of Dom Pedro (former King of Portugal) and Doña Ines de Castro took place. The main building encompasses the older parts of the quinta, with large common rooms very well decorated. The rooms are excellent (at least those of the garden), large and modern, with views (and exit) to the impressive garden.

The garden merits a 45 mins slow walk, and has several different parts. The breakfast is correct.

However, as romantic it might be, for a 4 star hotel it is possibly a little overpriced.

My wife and I agree with "Certainly not up to expectations..." below. Unlike that reviewer, we did not have the good fortune to get upgraded, and were banished to the spa wing. It is completely incongruous with the property - cold, minimalist, and just creepy in the morning. When I came out at 7:15 am to go to the fitness center or pool, the lights were out everywhere, and no one was around to help. Our room was spacious, including the bathroom, and there was a deck overlooking the garden and pool. As noted below, no turndown service, and wireless reception is spotty. Ask for a map of Coimbra, and reception has only a ridiculous Xeroxed, unintelligible piece of paper to offer. The bar is good - a free wine reception every night. The breakfast was fine - nothing special. Next time we're in Coimbra, we'll stay elsewhere.

Room Tip: DON'T stay in the spa wing!

Forget the photos on the website because it doesn't look anything like them. Rather, it is an aging hotel from grand times gone by. We were upgraded to a deluxe room in the main hotel because our travel agent had booked us in the spa building and we did not want to be in a place that looked like a small convention center full of people and their kids. ( The fact that they built such a building and attached it to the original hotel shows that someone was out of their mind.) Our room was very large and attractively appointed, as was the bathroom. You would think, though, that a place promoting itself as a luxury hotel would have turndown service, but not here. It seemed that there was always a line to get something at the reception desk, making check-in and out a long process. The golf course looks like a poor municipal course, but may be adequate if you have nothing else to do. The pool was large and looked nice, but the gardens that they encourage everyone to visit are a waste of time. Instead, go into town, visit the university and the cute center area, and use the hotel only for sleeping. We did not try the restaurant in the hotel for dinner, but the breakfast was average.

Room Tip: Definitely book the main hotel.

This main public rooms of this hotel are beautiful . It has been extended over the years and we stayed in a room with a view of the garden. The room was very comfortable. The garden is amazing - huge selection of majestic trees in a romantic setting - very well maintained.
The hotel is outside the town - but has views over to the universities on the hill.
We tried the buffet by the pool at lunch time and it was very disappointing. The main restaurant is open in the evening and the food and service here are excellent - I just felt that it was a shame that we were in such an ordinary corridor type of room when the house has some amazing rooms - but that is just my opinion - the food combinations were very good and it was a nice treat (bit expensive)
