“to get the feeling to be a princess”

This hotel is hidden behind a gate, once the gate is opened someone is there to help with the luggage and you get a wide range of information about the hotel and its surroundings. People are very helpful at all time. The rooms, with an historic character are just heaven. The swimming pool, the indoor pool, the sauna and turkish steambath are very relaxing. The gym could use some improvement. The gardens of the hotel, the chapel and the library can be visited. The hotel has a michelin-star restaurant. This restaurant is good but over-priced. We enjoyed eating there but the quality didn't meet up with the price. The breakfast was perfect, the bar very cosy. The hotel harboured an midsummer music festival in their gardens to which we could go for free, parking is available. It was perfect.
Coimbra itself is a very beautifil village with plenty to do and to visit: universidade, sé velha e nova, lots of museums, convento Santa Clara a velha,...

This hotel incorporates an old manor home whose outside has a rather weather-beaten appearance. Inside it is a different story, with very good maintenance of a charming old building, plus some nice newer buildings added on. This was the only hotel we stayed at in Portugal which had enough lighting in the guest rooms. The bathroom was luxurious. The hotel is in a small and attractive park connected to the famous 14th-century story of Pedro and Ines. The pool is extremely nice. A special plus during our stay was free tickets to high-quality open-air symphony concerts in the garden both nights we were there.

The surroundings also contain some golf facilities -- more of a nuisance than a plus for us personally, since we are not golfers.

Be aware that the hotel is across the river from the city center, although there is a convenient and attractive footbridge. The walk does take a while, and the neighborhood between the footbridge and hotel entrance (which you can traverse in a few minutes) is a bit seedy, although it seemed safe enough. An inexpensive taxi ride may be a better choice to go into town, although we used one only once, and walked the other times.

The hotel is a bit short of perfection: there was a slight sewer odor in the immediate vicinity of our toilet, and the breakfast scrambled eggs did not taste very good. But I would still give 5 stars overall, since it was on balance the nicest place we stayed in Portugal. The price is high by Portuguese standards, but not out of line given the overall experience.

Our first words when we entered this palace turned hotel was WOW...we couldn't believe how beautiful and luxurious this hotel was. I had read the reviews on this hotel before arriving and was a bit concerned about comments about its condition but REALLY? This is an old palace and you cannot expect it to be in perfect shape...theres more positives here than there are negatives...

So we had a room in the older section and the rooms itself are clean, not the greatest design but the rest of the hotel made up for it. There's a beautiful library, a chapel, a drawing room, a sitting room, a museum, a spa with an indoor pool and a GORGEOUS outdoor pool. We spent the day relaxing by the pool while the other guests visited Coimbra and it was perfect.

The breakfast is quite good and filling. Typical european breakfast but it was pretty tasty. The staff were very kind and accommodating. They offered us suggestions of restaurants, places to visit and would call us cabs when necessary.

All in all, a super hotel. I would highly recommend this to anyone. Don't expect a spotless, perfect hotel because it won't be...but you WILL discover a hotel with lots of charm and history....!

Room Tip: Stay in the older section, the public areas are more interesting and fun to hang out in...

Because the hotel had "lost" our reservation and there were only two rooms left, we were grudgingly upgraded to a beautiful suite. But there are many quirks, e.g., no hooks to hang towels on in the bathroom. The place needs some serious maintenance: the wall behind one door had serious water damage; the wood on more than one window frame was rotten (insects? water?)
The ground are magnificent. The pool is wonderful. Barring one awful person, the staff is superb.

Room Tip: What is the point of going to an old hotel to stay in a new section of Scandinavian modern deslign?

ROOM
We had booked their best suite, The King Suite, which was ready when we arrived at around 10 o’clock – great. The suite consists of a small hall where the wardrobe is, a large bedroom, large marble bathroom (twin vanities, bath tub, separate shower, separate toilet) and large living room (incl. card playing table, sitting area, coffee making facilities) plus a huge but unfurnished semi private terrace (one could get to this terrace also from a corridor leading to other rooms).

POOL, SPA, GYM
The pool was located in the back garden close to the (breakfast and lunch) restaurant Aqua. Not particularly charming layout of the pool, not particularly comfortable loungers, no poolside service, but still a good place to relax. We needed to bring special towels from the room to use at the pool.
Did not try the spa.
Gym would have been OK if the air conditioning would work better.
Indoor pool as well as the pool in the garden but did not try that.

FOOD
We had chosen the hotel mainly for it’s restaurant Arcadas where we had dinner in the evening. We had the large gourment tasting menu with wines. Food and service good, but not as good as other similar restaurants that we have been to. Had lunch at the Aqua restaurant by the pool which served one of the best lunches we had during our trip. Serviced by same personnel as the main restaurant, meaning service was great, but a bit slow for a lunch maybe. Breakfast good.

SERVICE
The hotel has four stars meaning it was not top luxury. Service in restaurant was better than a four star hotel, reception and others more than OK, but not perfect.

OTHERS
Coimbra has an old, really beautiful university which is worth visiting.

From our arrival at the front of the hotel to our departure, the staff was gracious and eager to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. Before going into the description, I need to tell you about finding the entrance. Google maps doesn't help. It refers to street names but there aren't any street names posted, so finding the right road is very frustrating. We passed the entrance twice because it looks like a narrow private road and has a very tiny sign. When you stop to ask for directions, take a piece of paper and a pen and ask the person to draw it.
So, the hotel...It's huge - much larger than it looks, with a pool and spa. There's a pricey restaurant (Aqua), but you can eat in the bar, too, which includes in the courtyard. The breakfast is wonderful.

Room Tip: Ask for a garden room. They have a french door onto a little "balcony" with a gate and st...
