Had a great few days at the hotel. Had one of the Palace rooms overlooking the fountain and spa rooms. Bedroom was large and well appointed although the bed was a lot softer than what I am used to. Free parking which is always good. A 15 min walk over the river to the town which was fine but a bit dark on a surprisingly wet September evening. Wish there were a few more restaurants closer.

Enjoyed dinner in the Michelin star restaurant but not as good as the other Michelin place we tried in Lisbon. We hoped for a better breakfast because of the Michelin star - it was good but not amazing (the cookie was fab!)

Would stay again if we went back to Coimbra

The hotel is constituted by an old central part plus a modern one looking like an anonimous cube.
I was given a comfortable room and service was overall friendly. However, nothing to be compared to the excellence of a Relais & Chateaux, the chain of hotels this one surprisingly belongs to. For example, I had to carry all my luggage on the stairs leading to reception with no help, there is no turn down of the bed in the evenings, breakfast is just standard.

We decided to go for the weekend to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Our room was fine with a very nice small private garden. The staff was also great. We also used the spa which was nice. Recommend Pedro & Ines massage for couples.

We stayed 4 nights in this historic hotel which is a lovely palace. We had a room in the palace with its own private garden chairs and loungers. The room was a good size and quiet for sleeping. It had good amenities and robes. The hotel is a good 10-15 minutes walk from the centre and other restaurants, but it is in nice gardens.

The spa was excellent and the massages we had were excellent. The outside pool is quite plain but the inside pool, sauna and steam room were very nicely done. The welcome drink each night (to try local wines) was a nice touch. The breakfast was Ok but it was hard to find an English newspaper and the service was quite slow (with regard to setting up tables and replenishing food). I don't know why hotels give you the smallest glasses for juice that you need to have at least 3 to get a decent refreshment - just provide a larger glass.

The 1 star Michelin restaurant in the hotel was nice, but not great. The decor was nice and wine list extensive. We ate there twice and the set menu was good, but I have had better service and food in other 1 star establishments.

My biggest issue with the hotel was the lack of internet in the rooms. When you are working having to go to the reception to get wiifi is very inconvenient and for a hotel of this calibre it is really not good enough. I told the receptionist and she empathised that I was not the only one to complain about this but for some reason the hotel has not changed....

Room Tip: I liked the palace room - but there are also spa and garden rooms

Beautiful old palace, emphasis on old. It needs lots of money spent on renovating it to be worthy of a Relais and chateaux endorsement. We have stayed twice and will avoid it in the future.
It's sad to see what could be a lovely place get rundown for lack of funds, maybe??

Interesting place to stay when in Coimbra. However I personally have had a slight problem with the combination of the historic (beautiful) parts and the more modern architecture. Unfortunately we did not time to enjoy the spa area but thoroughly enjoyed the private gardens. As other guests have mentioned, the surroundings outside the hotel gates are rather depressing! Our TV did not work properly (bad reception on any programme) and the shower hose was broken..

Everything about this hotel we borderline great which is why I had to give it an average rating.
The rooms are somewhat small with dated bathrooms. I will give them a HUGE PLUS for the excellent beds... one of the best beds I have ever slept in at a hotel.
The service and upkeep of the grounds was lacking. A little more TLC and this hotel could be magnificent. All and all a good experience but lacking that extra touch.

The restaurant in the hotel is EXCELLENT, a bit on the pricy side, very formal, but I would highly recommend that everyone make a stop there if they can swing it.
