“Splendid place in nice private setting”
Reviewed September 15, 2012

Interesting place to stay when in Coimbra. However I personally have had a slight problem with the combination of the historic (beautiful) parts and the more modern architecture. Unfortunately we did not time to enjoy the spa area but thoroughly enjoyed the private gardens. As other guests have mentioned, the surroundings outside the hotel gates are rather depressing! Our TV did not work properly (bad reception on any programme) and the shower hose was broken..

Everything about this hotel we borderline great which is why I had to give it an average rating.
The rooms are somewhat small with dated bathrooms. I will give them a HUGE PLUS for the excellent beds... one of the best beds I have ever slept in at a hotel.
The service and upkeep of the grounds was lacking. A little more TLC and this hotel could be magnificent. All and all a good experience but lacking that extra touch.

The restaurant in the hotel is EXCELLENT, a bit on the pricy side, very formal, but I would highly recommend that everyone make a stop there if they can swing it.

Slight shock on arrival to find the hotel an oasis slap bang in the middle of a housing estate. If you're not too sure about the width of your car you may find the drive through the entrance gates a touch harrowing. Reception good, room fairly ordinary with even more ordinary bathroom and carpets, curtains all a bit grubby. One of our bathrobes still wet from previous occupant but changed immediately when reception advised. Aircon in the room was noisy and positioned in the window which meant you had to leave the curtains open to stay reasonably cool. Public rooms etc in old part of hotel all very nice and wifi is free. Then you come to the "new" tacked on bit at the back which has the breakfast and lunch restaurant and health club - completely ruins any semblance of being in a palace and the architect responsible wasn't feeling himself when he drew up the plans. We had dinner in the Michelin 1 star restaurant which very good but nothing 1 star special although the service was excellent along with the wine list which has some very nice and reasonably priced wines. Alternative restaurant choices in Coimbra were not that appealing and we were pleased we made the hotel restaurant choice. Take a taxi to the old town and get dropped off at the university and then walk down - so much nicer than struggling up those dozens of steps.

The hotel is charming (yet maybe not up to other Relais&Chateaux), and the staff is very polite and helpful. There is a very nice swimming pool to enjoy. Our room (#12) was huge and very nice. We had a very nice dinner in the gastronomic restaurant. Two minor regrets : the neighborhood of the hotel is very dull and lacks charm, and the breakfast at the hotel is really not up to the standards of the hotel. Overall, a very nice place, and great value for money.

Sitting beside the pool surrounded by the amazing gardens of Quinta das Lagrimas I felt like I had been transported to the land of the lotus eaters - luxury, langour, the heat alleviated by lovely fresh breezes. The older part of the hotel is delightful, the history is intriguing, and the modern wing, where we had our room, is just pure luxury - especially the huge beds with divine sheets. If you can't usually afford a six star experience, have a little splurge in Coimbra.

Room Tip: More character in the original old building, modern marble luxury in the newest wing.

If you travel through Portugal, Coimbra will probably be a place to stop over for a night. We stayed in an old house built in the 1800's that had been on the property of historical royalty going as far back as 1329 and before with stories (if you like history, this is the place for you). The story -- much like the murderous story of Henry VIII -- is rather creepy, but it is certainly interesting. You can visit the fountain where the mistress of the prince was murdered. The hotel is well-run by a well-known luxury organization, but remember, it's an old house. Very elegant, lovely even, but not a modern hotel. The staff is extremely accommodating, and the night watchman gave me a personal tour of the house, including the library and chapel, which I hadn't seen on my own. From the grounds you can see the university up on a hill. During our trip up the coast of Portugal, this was my husband's favorite hotel.

Room Tip: Ours had a door that went straight into the garden.

We had a quiet room in the modern part, with even a littel garden at the back of the swimming pool (which is very good and great)

Room Tip: We liked our room in the modern part
