“FREE FADO and nice atmosphere”
Reviewed April 26, 2012

Read there was a Fado performance in Cafe Santa Cruz. Classic Portugese Cafe . Only a few wines by the bottle , but all very affordable and a very entertaining free fado performance. We will return someday......

“Harmony of a café with years of history.”
Reviewed April 7, 2012

Next to the The New Cathedral of Coimbra, built in 1543, (Portuguese: Sé Nova de Coimbra) and in the heart of the Baixa (downtown area) the Café Santa Cruz offers a welcoming place to rest one's tired feet. There is the choice of sitting outside with excellent views over Praça Oito de Maio or sitting inside the café with it's authentic Baroque architecture, which was once a part of the cathedral and, I'm told, was the residence of the live~in priests, . It has been a café since 1923, but to enter is a far greater step back in time.
You may be bothered by gypsy children begging outside, but ignore them and they soon give up and the waiters shoo them away if they see them.

“Cafe with vaulted ceilings”
Reviewed January 2, 2012

This is the place to have coffee in Coimbra because not only is it pretty on the inside, it also offers fado music for free on some nights and also very tasty pastry to go with your coffee. And oh the waiters speak good english.
