We stayed only one night at this hotel and overall it was a good deal. The only problem we had was the odor in the room. It smelled like sewage and cabbage combined, probably it was from the old carpet.....very strange to have a carpet in an old hotel in a warm climate. The hotel is dated but it has its charm, you get a feeling of the good old time, and for the 60 euro/night I guess you can expect too much anyway.

Be aware that although on their website it sais it is walkable distance from the train station, Do Not walk, it is a long walk, the station next to the hotel was not working actually as august 2012. We almost missed our train on the way to Porto since the receptionist told us that we don't need to go to the main station since the one cross the street is easier. Well, we had to call a taxi las minute as the station was closed and it hasn't been operating in a while....

We definitely made the right choice in staying at the Astoria - in its 86th year it is still the place to stay in Coimbra. The wonderfully preserved Art Deco interiors made it feel as if we were travelling back in time. Our room was spacious as was the marble bathroom and we had a great view across the river from our sheltered balcony with its little writing desk. It was also very clean and well serviced. The reception staff were a bit taciturn but OK. Taking breakfast in the grand panelled restaurant was an experience and the buffet breakfast itself was ample - you could set yourself up for the day (the one sour note was a rather officious waitress who sharply told off a guest for mistakenly putting a bun in a croissant in the toaster). Unfortunately, the restaurant wasn't open for dining and the bar was closed. The place is redolent of a bygone era - perfect for a nostalgic break in this city, quiet in the summertime without the students at the ancient university.

Room Tip: Ask for one overlooking the river.

Endorse all that's been said about the period charm - yes, a fridge in room would have been nice, but that's not normal for Portugal. A bar would have been a plus, but there were plenty just yards away. Great location, big rooms with huge ceilings and nice deep bath, pride of place goes to breakfast spread in gorgeous room. Scrambled eggs best ever tasted in hotel setting, how they did it I do not know. People watching guests from all over Europe making their choices from the spread always an entertaining start to the day.

Room Tip: Ask for a view of the river - yes, it's the noisier side of the hotel but well worth it

If you just want a comfortable hotel in Coimbra, with an excellent central location and great river views, hotel Astoria is an excellent choice. If , in addition, you like architecture, this hotel is a dream come true. Astoria was built in the 1920's and allthough it has modern comfort, the style, interior and exterior, was kept intact. The furniture, decoration, even the elevator, are gloriously art déco. Entering the hotel is entering a bygone era: a fascinating experience .

Hilary & I stayed for 2 nights in June 2012.
Hotel was dated as someone has said around 1926, furniture certainly was that old.
Rooms large & clean, beds excellent, we stayed on the third floor overlooking the river. Bit noisy
from traffic, but bearable.
Big disappointment was the lack of facilities, the hotel claims three stars. No bar, no way of getting a drink outside breakfast hours....
Free internet.
Overall impression fine for a short stay but would consider the hotel a good bed & breakfast place. Hotel from the outside looks worn and in need of many thousands of Euro to smarten it up
Centrally located, easy walk into town, lots of bars/restaurants within staggering distance.

Room Tip: Front overlooking river, otherwise the view would be of crumbling buildings.

this is my favourite hotel in Portugal.. I have lived and travelled all over Portugal and this is my number one place... HOWEVER IT IS NOT QUIET at night there's noise.. but that aside.. it's a trip into a bygone age.. I almost didn't write this review as I have always felt this hotel was my personal secret... it keeps a part of my heart
I trust any who read this feel the same

Room Tip: value for money.. well try IBIS not far away.. or many others.. nostalgia ... then this is for you
