“Tradition and Sophistication”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 22, 2013

The decoration is based in the local history and city tradition in a trendy fashion way!
The starters (caldeirada) the main dish (arroz de marisco) and the dessert (ovo mole à bairro) are delicious. It´s unmissable to lost its taste. I strongly recommend you to try it!
Paulo, the bartender, was also very nice and kind!

“More than a restaurant, an authentic experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 21, 2013

I was quite surprised with O bairro, not only was the food at the same time classical with tons of traditional portuguese ingredients but also had a good and exciting innovative approach. The decor is also outstanding in mixing the modern and classical elements and the deserts are just amazing.

I can't imagine ever going back to Aveiro without trying O Bairro.

“Disappointing!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 9, 2013

I was looking forward to try this restaurant. Aveiro already had a couple of good restaurants with nice, simply cooked but quality food . I was hoping that "O bairro" would rise the standards, using the same quality ingredients while adding a more sophisticated preparation techniques and presentation.

Well, my experience at the restaurant went terribly wrong. To start, the huge amount of mosquitos inside the restaurant: we had mosquitos swimming in the olive oil cup. Their menu is small (4/starters, 8/10 main courses, 4-5 deserts) wich is fine if you want to deliver quality dishes. But when you have a small menu you can't fail to deliver half of the dishes. That was what happened: they had available only half of the main courses in a saturday night dinner!

The food itself was poor: we had grilled fish which was overcooked, dry and honestly it seemed frozen (which is not acceptable when the restaurant has the fish market right in front door). Poor seasoning of food in general. The portions are ridiculously small (even for gourmet food standards).

We paid 30 €/person, for a starter, main course and a bottle of wine. For that price you expect to have a very nice meal in (almost) any portuguese restaurant.

Overall, from my experience I would classify this restaurant as a "top restaurant wannabe".
