“Beautiful Setting and Quality Rooms”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 12, 2012

We only had the opportunity to spend one night at Quinta das Merces, but it was one of our best. You must have a car or willing to cab it all over to be able to stay here and enjoy everything Angra and the island have to offer, but it is worth it! The location and grounds are beautiful and it is a very peaceful location with well appointed common areas and rooms. Spacious and comfortable beds, but it is even better to choose one of the several sitting rooms or to relax on the beautiful patio. The breakfast was a buffet, which included some delicious fresh fruit and some of the better coffee we had during our time on the islands.

I spent three wonderful nights at Quinta das Merces and enjoyed it tremendously. Initially I'd hoped to stay in the center of Angra do Heroismo - but, as it turned out I was glad to spend the day in Angra .... and then retreat to Quinta das Merces in the evening. The husband and wife hosts are fantastic - recommending local restaurants and making sure your stay is enjoyable. The rooms are quiet - and I think I got my best sleep in the Azores in this establishment. The continental breakfasts are great. And I can't say enough about the furnishings at Quinta das Merces. You kind of feel like you are a guest in someone's home. The antiques in the public rooms are beautiful. And - as I said - after a busy day sightseeing, to return to Quinta das Merces, sit on the front deck and watch the sun set, drinking a Portuguese beer and talking with guest from various countries is a perfect way to end a busy day. I can see why Quinta das Merces has regular guests who return year after year.

Room Tip: No room really directly face the ocean, but if you ask for an ocean view view - the hosts will try t...

We liked: The hotel is located close to São Mateus and less than 5 minutes away (by car) from Angra do Heroísmo. It used to be a farm that got completely abandoned and partly destroyed. The present owners restored it to its original beauty. The sea facing living rooms and old kitchen are great, and so is the garden and sea water infinity pool. The owners are very proud of their work and keen to share the history of the building with the hotel guests.

We did not like: The hotel rooms face the back of the building, therefore only a couple of them offer lateral sea view. The hotel does not provide slippers. The pillow quality is sub-standard. The TV set is quite old. There is no wireless access in the rooms. The buffet breakfast could use some daily variation and some music in the background.

Would probably visit again if in the area.

The Quinta das Merces must be one of the best places we have stayed in, it was in an excellent setting, close to the sea and not to far away from the town of Angra ( 2 miles away) which my wife and I walked every day there and back. The family who run the Quinta were extremly helpful and nothing was too much trouble, whether it was asking them to call a taxi down to asking for ice for your drink. The village of Sao Mateus just under a mile away had a very good fish restaurant called the Beira Mar, this was recommended by the family who run the Quinta. We have visited the Azores before but the location and facilities far exceeded our expectations. A definite must.

We found the Quinta das Merces a beautiful, authentic and cosy place. It is located some kilometres west of Angra do Heroismo, right at the beginning of the village of Sao Mateus and very close to the sea. It offers accommodation in a charming, luxurious yet traditional setting. The buildings of the Quinta are very beautiful, the surrounding gardens wonderful, with marvellous views to the Atlantic, best enjoyed from the swimming pool in the lush garden. The Quinta is run by a very friendly family, supported by helpful staff, dressed in traditional maiden's uniforms - which perfectly fit the general environment. The breakfast - considering the rather poor breakfast standards in Portugal, Madeira and the Azores - is exceptionally good.
Finally, it might be worth pointing out that King Juan Carlos of Spain and his wife Sophia spent their holiday in the Quinta das Merces - which is documented on some photos and a guest-book entry.
We would also recommend the traditional fish restaurant "Beira Mar" at the harbour of Sao Mateus.

We spent 3 nights at this stunning property and loved it. We stayed in the very pretty junior suite, which was spacious and comfortable. We also appreciated the free wi-fi connection in the room. Even more impressive were the parlors and sitting rooms, which were elegant and inviting. There is an honor bar with liquor in the common area, or the owners will bring you a beer or glass of wine on request. We enjoyed having evening drinks while leafing through some of the library’s books, and afternoon drinks on the oceanfront terrace.

While we didn’t take advantage of them, the Quinta also has a beautiful swimming pool, exercise room, and game/billiards room. We did enjoy walking the paths through the lush gardens and forests on the grounds, and the private chapel is a real gem.

Contrary to some of the previous reviewers, we also enjoyed the breakfast at the Quinta. In addition to the usual cheeses, breads, and yogurts, they also brought each table its own bowl of freshly scrambled eggs on request, and the orange juice was fresh-squeezed.

The owners are sweet, hospitable people who treated us as honored guests. I can’t think of a thing that could improve this wonderful place.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Quinta das Merces - A secret place at the Atlantic Ocean. The Country House - Quinta das Mercês is ideally situated in the protected area of Mount Brasil, in Island Terceira, Azores. It grows from the sea line through the interior within an area of about 35,000 square meters. It gathers the ocean influence with a dense extension of Atlantic woods wrapping an architectural set of great historical and cultural value. The farm roots go back to the XVIth century when the actual farm tenant’s house was built. In the XVIIth century was raised the Manor House to which, in the same century, was added the chapel in all alike a small church. The House and the Chapel are the nucleus of one of the last examples of the Feudal Architecture on the surrounds of the city of Angra do Heroismo. The outside space, with deep connection to the sea, was valorised through a careful landscape architectural project witch faithfully kept the original line of the land, implementing selective areas of leisure. It is a multifaceted space directed to an exacting and qualified tourism demand. The interaction with the sea allows practicing numerous sports in the open wide Atlantic and the dense woods invite to share a relaxing environment. The Country House Quinta das Merces is a unique space where nature perfectly combines with a rich historical patrimony, giving the pleasure of an unforgettable experience. ... more   less
