Quinta do Martelo
Reviewed March 20, 2013

My husband and I have been staying at "Quinta do Martello" for the last few years. It is a very relaxing place, and takes you back to simpler time in life. All their produce is grown on their property and is organic, they also raise their own animals, the beef is grass fed. Breakfast is simply wonderful, and all their meals are traditional dishes. They also have great amenities, swimming pool, tennis court, and fitness center, to name a few. We always look forward to coming back each year to be able to get away from the big city and listen to nature.

It is an ethnographic site, a large area with a number of houses and rooms surrounded by land, nature, birds, donkeys and, not far away, the ocean. It is very quiet, however it is possible to reach Angra do Heroismo in 10 minutes by car. There is also a supermarket nearby where you can buy food to cook at home. There is a restaurant that makes traditional Azorean dishes using the fruit and vegetables which are grown by the Quinta. Breakfast is served in a different house every week, and you can choose among a wide range of cheese, ham, jams, biscuits and fruit home-produced. We booked a room with private bathroom but when we arrived we were kindly offered a whole great house at the same price. It was Casa dos Velhotes, a reproduction of a XVI century rural house with a wooden bed, a wooden sitting room but with tv, air-conditioner, fully equipped kitchen and a very modern bathroom. The staff was very helpful, especially the perfect-English-speaker maid. And Terceira then is wonderful...

Was not sure what to expect, but found this place great. The pool was lovely, waking up to birdsong unforgetable, the rroms all unique and charming - like being back at my grans house - alters and icons included. Excellent breakfast. Good idea to include the car hire. Cooler then the coast.

It seemed like a great idea, see "traditional life style" of our ancestors. Ugh. Perhaps it was the rain. Perhaps it was the ants. Perhaps it was the barely usable kitchen and lack of any one to ask about it. No soap, no towels. Perhaps it was that the price we were quoted via email was not the same as when we arrived. Perhaps it was the creepy manager (changed his mind about the price, ended up being DOUBLE what he quoted me as we asked for one room but he insisted our kids stay in an additional room.), the breakfast being included, the room we were meant to stay in, asked for cash the day BEFORE our last day). I loved the gardens and the pool looked fine (in spite of the rain) but we were so disgusted with the manager/owner that we would NEVER go back. It was like a KOA campground experience, and very, very expensive. Make sure you get the price in writing, make sure get the number of guests in writing. Make sure you get it all in writing. And good luck, as I would never stay here again.
