We spent a week in this hotel in the middle of June 2013 and were quite satisfied with it. The hotel staff are friendly and helpful, the atmosphere is nice, the interior is modern and spacy, the pool area well kept and breakfast buffet abundant. The rooms are big and well cleaned. The garden view is pleasant and the garden itself nice. The only problem was free Wi-Fi because we had to take a new password every day! The restaurant was nothing special even a la Carte. The hotel is well placed and near the centre. The airplanes flying over occasionally could be disturbing for those who want to spend a quiet holiday. We could think of coming back to this hotel.

I recently came home from a week long holiday in Ponta Delgada with my friend. We stayed at the Royal Garden Hotel for the entire week, and were rather disappointed in the lack of hospitality from the hotel reception (especially after reading a few of the other reviews beforehand). Frankly this is probably the first time i have ever encountered such negativity from the front desk of any hotel i have stayed at. Before i get back to that i would like to point out that the other staff at the hotel (maids, doormen etc.) were very friendly and helpful. From the very beginning when we checked in we were met by a rude attitude, just for asking if we could have an extra key card since we were initially only given one to share. After that we avoided asking for anything, however the few times we had to approach them they seemed every bit as rude. On one occasion when i simply asked if we had gotten any phone messages while we were out, the receptionist at the time raised her voice at me and said "check your room don't ask here!". Even a local guide had difficulty with the reception when he asked to connect his call to our room. When we checked out we got an absurd 140 euros phone bill, which came as an unpleasant surprise to us both since we only made a few short phone calls ALL to LOCAL numbers. So don't be fooled by the "50 cent per minute" pricing that is shown on the phones, they will charge you insane amounts a minute and not explain why it differs from price you are "told".

The hotel itself was nice and modern, however the rooms could use use an update. The breakfast at the hotel was ok, and the two swimming pools (indoor/outdoor) were nice.

What a shame that we were charged such a extortionate amount of money for such a short call, 111 euros for 9 min call, over the price of a room for the night. After asking the receptionist to make a call for me on our second day she advised me to return to the room and use the phone, to which i did, as an international guest i would have thought the staff would have informed me of the ridiculous charges the hotel make for calls, you expect some expense but what we were charged is criminal. We had such a nice stay aswell before the bomb shell on the night before we left, ruined the holiday. Really let the hotel down as we had found the hotel great beforehand it was clean, immaculate surroundings, good service from the breakfast and room staff although reception staff were not as informative as i think they should be for a 4 star hotel, bit dissapointing. Great for a relaxing break but stongly advise anyone staying not to use the phone in the rooms for obviouse reasons. What a let down!

The hotel is quite nice because it has an Asian atmosphere not expected in the middle of Sao Miquel and has quite a few modern amenities (I must say coming from the US-this was the first hotel I had encountered that was "green", so it was quite an eye-opener on how the society of the islands has thrived following the Salazar debacle-having grown up believing it was "backward" from the stories of my grandparents'). It was quite nice to take a daily stroll to town and to be able to visit the piazza in front of the Church of Santo Christo and have it be a very short and pleasant walk both during the day and at night. The buffet breakfast featured all things "Portuguese" from my childhood including sweetbread, quince jelly/jam, and linquica. I did find it disappointing (and expensive) that the restaurants in the hotel were not all that innovative nor native, and we had a hard time being able to grab a quick snack in the evening as everything was pretty much closed up after 7pm. In general, it was a great bargain compared to some of the prices along the waterfront and quite wonderful for tourists who wanted to be out and about instead of sitting in the hotel.

Room Tip: the inside rooms that overlook the courtyard are quite nice, but you won't see anything but the...

My wife and I are currently living in Portugal and booked a four day break in Sao Miguel, and the Royal Garden was the hotel suggested by our local travel agency. Overall, we had no problems whatsoever....even at check in the courteous staff (all three of them!) managed to meet our request for a room on as low a floor as possible.

Unlike some reviewers, we thought the buffet breakfast was pretty good - offering (almost) 'a full English' upwards or downwards, whichever way you choose to look at it! Serving dishes were efficiently topped up and empty plates and cups were quickly removed. We didn't have dinner in the hotel as it seemed to consist only of themed buffets and we both prefer to sit and be served our evening meal.

Our bedroom was fine, with a good bathroom (once you had worked out the slightly eccentric shower) and room cleaning was always carried out efficiently and when we were absent.

So, all in all, a perfectly good and fairly well located hotel (not right in the centre of town, but only a few minutes' walk from all the restaurants and shops). My one gripe (which to be fair our travel agent had told us about) was the 5 Euros a day for Wi-Fi....Ok, only40 Euros for the two of us had we signed up every day; but that could easily be enough to make us look elsewhere when we visit this beautiful island again. Surely Wi-Fi should be a 'given' in this day and age?

Room Tip: Less traffic noise if you can get a room overlooking the pool.

The hotel is quite new and the bedrooms are quite large. Unfortunately my room had a door to the next room (I guess most of the rooms have them) and the sound from the other room's TV was terribly loud. I put up with it for two hours and then had to go and knock. They took a long time to open the door, apparently they had fallen asleep with the TV at its fullest!
It's a shame the rooms are not very well insulated because the whole place reminds us of Zen and Japan. It's a place to have a break and rest. You can walk to the sea from the hotel (5 min). I suggest hiring a car and explore the island, which is amazingly beautiful. There are also nature trails and I'm told it's an unforgettable experience.
Coming back to the hotel, the breakfast could be better. Wich such good cheese available, why don't they provide it instead of a most vulgar cheese? I must say that's one of the biggest mysteries I've come across when staying in any hotel in Ponta Delgada. They completely ignore the local products, which can be very good, and proceed as if they were located anywhere in the world. Royal Garden is not an exception, I'm afraid.
An advice: go to the market or a grocery, buy those wonderful "queijos frescos - the best are made from goat milk - buy a jar of "doce de capucho" or "doce de goiaba", buy a loaf of that wonderful bread and "bolo lêvedo" (a must!), bring the whole treasure to your room and make a most wonderful breakfast for yourself!
As for the price of the rooms, you'll have good value for money.

Room Tip: Ask for a room from where you can see bits of the sea. The hotel is not located in front of the sea...

Upon arrival the front desk became nervous because we arrived with 8 other people. Although that there were 3 people at the desk, only one was working.

Rooms are not 4* quality. When you sit at the toilet, your knees bump at the door. And I'm only 5.3". The badcurtain is smelly, and it is a curtain!! The soaps offered by the hotel where very cheap. No tissues at the room. The TV, and normally I even don't use it, was old en the quality of the broadcast was very bad. I was not impressed at all by the rooms.

Welness is a an opportunistic word to describe the amenities. They are available but outdated. At the ceiling of the hammam the paint is peiling of.
We saw some ppl with a bathrobe of the hotel, but we didn't find one

You have to pay to play pool !! No free wifi.

Some of the staff are friendly, others are afraid that you are going to ask something.

Breakfast is the same every day. Lots of different breads to choose, but that's it. Every day, the same sort of eggs, bacon, cheese.
Don't use the half-pension, because it is buffet every evening. It's very boring, and it's annoying after eating 3 days the same food.

They put thrashbins in the hallways to sort your stuff?

The Japanase garden was ready for some holiday, because it was I guess unhappy with it's state it was in.

There was a passage of a tropical storm so we had to stay in the hotel, but there is nothing to entertain us. They even don't try!

Al this, I can handle, but not in a 4* hotel.
