“Dark grey and white is their colour”
Reviewed July 8, 2014

Ponta Delgada Azores is on São Miguel Island, Portugal. The harbor is beautiful. Right in front of the dock you will see the Church of Sao Pedro. When you walk to the west, all the acttractions are there in dark grey and white. You will see the famous 3 arches which was the old city gate in the 17th century, the entrance to "Praca Goncalo Velho Cabral" Square. Sao Sebastiao church and the Town Hall is not far from there. I saw people up at the top of the city hall bell tower to see the city view. You also can have a Leisure walk all the way to Forte de Sao Bras to see some of their history for €1.00

After exploring the town, you can go to the shopping mall and have 20 mins free wifi to send messages home.

Happy traveling!

These three arches( called Portas da Cidade) and literal translation is Doors of the City, have stood the test of time. They stand tall and white and grey between church of Sao Sebastiao and the ocean. Something to be seen and admired.

“A mid-Atlantic reminder of Macau”
Reviewed October 6, 2013

The "City Gates" are three arches erected in the Eighteenth Century to act, as it were, as the formal entrance to the city of Ponta Delgada, the largest city on the island of Sao Miguel and now the administrative capital of the Azores. The gates are formal and decorative only, with barred gates inserted below the arches leading to downtown ("Baixa") centre. The gates front a delightful mosaic-square in contrasting black and white-patterned cobblestones surrounding a square and the majestic "Matriz" Church ("Matriz de Sao Sebastiao"), built in the Manueline style. The arches are easily accessed from the esplanade parallelling the waterfront of the main port, and about 200 metres from the modern restaurant-heavy cruise ship terminal terminal. The arches themselves have an ecclesiastical counterpart in the form of the facade of the St Francesco church in Macau, another delightful part of the former Portuguese overseas possessions.

“A Must-See in Ponta Delgada”
Reviewed September 18, 2013

The location at the harbor front in the center of Ponta Delgada is perfect for sightseeing. With its striking black basalt trim and whitewash walled arches located on a cobblestone plaza also decorated in black and white geometric designed stones, the City Gates are a photo opportunity not to be missed. With one a 3 block radius of that City Gates is the famous San Sebastian Church, museums, city hall, the harbor front where cruise ship docks, shopping, etc. The architecture is unique. This island is so incredible. It is the best kept secret in international travel!
