The visit only lasts an hour but if you like caves it's definitely worth the trip. The ground is very uneven so wear trainers!

We stopped in here to do one of the tours which last about 45 mins. The cave, or lava tunnel is reportedly quite long but unfortunately much of it isn't accessible to the public. Even more sad is that part of it was destroyed by the building of the new expressway. That said, this should not be missed. The tour starts with a video telling you about the volcanoes and caves of the islands and then you are taken down into the lava tunnel. There are two sections to see and they are an excellent example of this type of formation. The tour guides are well informed and there is ample opportunity for photographs.

For only 4 euro you cab visit the lava caves in Ponta Delgada. After a film with informatie about lava caves and the caves on the Acores, you go down en vist the caves.

There is a lot of colour in te cave and it is very different from other caves. The types of material, bacteria's and wearing a helmed makes it exciting. I enjoyed it very much. Don't forget to wear good shoes when entering the caves.
You cab also make a greater tour in the caves if you are with a own group: then you can crowl further into the caves.

I made some pictures: I hope it will speak for itself.........

The staff on site did a fantastic job explaining the history, formation, cause and components that forms this cave, really educational and interesting... I guess I was slightly disappointed because I was expecting more of a cave hike / excursion, which isn't... Much shorter and quicker than anticipated.
If you go in knowing this, you won't be disappointed and will enjoy what you see.
The best part is to feel the staff's excitement and passion as they describe the cave.

Very interesting to learn about how these volcanic caves were formed. You watch a short video first then don your hard hats and enter the caves for about a half hour tour. Very knowledgeable guide.
