“Probably not worth a wait unless you are there anyway”
Reviewed September 2, 2013

A somewhat interesting cave, but unfortunately you are able to see only a very small part of it. They have 5 or 6 tours during peak season - call ahead to find out when (11:30a and 2:30p are definite times). The movie they make you watch before going down is ridiculously tedious. The guides, however, were genuinely nice and fun, which made up for lack of substance.

Probably worth going only if you've never been to a cave before.

“Excellent introduction to volcanic caves”
Reviewed August 27, 2013

The gudies spoke good English and the introductory videoa was informative and well balanced. The open parts of the cave are well worth seing as the different types of lava are clear to see. Lighting is good and as the location is not the easiest by walking from Ponta Degrada town the visitior numbers per trip down to the caves is low giving plenty of opportunities for photographs.

“Treading where lava once flowed”
Reviewed August 21, 2013

We visited here as part of an excellent day organised by 'Geofun', but you can visit on your own. You always need to join a tour, though. The entrance is is an unprepossessing hut by the motorway.

When you are down in the tunnel ---you are standing where magma from the inner Earth once flowed! You will not get long stalagites as this is NOT a limestone cave, but I was fascinated by the lava stalagites.

The tour starts with a video presentation. Our female guide was very informative with a very dry sense of homour. Sadly, only a small part of the tunnels are open to visitors for safety reasons, but it is well worth going.

“if you are used to caves elsewhere, this is pretty dull”
Reviewed July 27, 2013

We had never seen lava tubes so we added this to our list of things to see while in Sao Miguel. Lava tubes are pretty much the same as small caves in the United States. Unfortunately this attraction was pretty bland if you have been in caves in the United States like Mammoth, Katchener in Arizona, Carlsbad, and all the caves along the Shenandoah valley in Virginia. I thought lava tubes were different than caves but it was pretty much the same. We barely saw anything unusual or different from caverns elsewhere. The best part of the tour was that our tour guide explained how most of the tubes had collapsed due to earthquakes or building in the city.

“Volcanic cave”
Reviewed July 22, 2013

The best think about this cave was the enthusiastic lovely girl who was our guide and gave us good information about it. The video before entering the cave was a bit too long. The cave as such does not compare to some huge gorgeous lime stone caves but still worth a visit.
