“Disappointing”
Reviewed May 29, 2014

After reading all the great reviews, my wife and I decided to find this place and give it a try. We were disappointed with the reception (we arrived at 6pm and had to walk almost into the kitchen to let them know we were there). Like other reviewers have stated, the cheese and meats are good, they have an excellent selection of wine, and the room is nice decorated. It was just disappointing given the excellent reviews we had read before going. There are other great restaurants in the area that are equal or better options.

“Can Opener”
Reviewed May 28, 2014

We'd read all the wonderful reviews too and found the small bar on the 12th, a cool and rainy evening. We quickly realized that the open kitchen featured one pan and a microwave. While the cured meats and cheeses were good, everything else came from a can or a bag that was brought in. The breads were small, the salad okay but drenched in bottled dressing, and the wines were very nice. But it is a mistake to think this is tapas or a real restaurant. Go for an appetizer and a drink.

“Excellent!”
Reviewed May 12, 2014

We had read the reviews and were bound and determined to find this place on our recent trip to Ponta Delgada. After looking for a long while, we asked several locals and no one seemed to have heard of it or know where this place was! On our third day we finally found it....it's location is obscure and facing what seems to be a back alley so it's understandable that even some locals don't know it's there. Once located, we made a reservation for the next evening, as we knew it was a very small restaurant (only 6-8 tables). What a fantastic find! Just as we had read, the owner/waiter/host, Bruno, was wonderfully helpful and friendly. He guided us with wine and food selection and we enjoyed everything. He took great delight in giving us details on where the ingredients came from and how the dishes were prepared and after talking to us about our wine preferences, his suggestion was spot on! We were struck by his attention to every detail and his wish for us to relax and enjoy our experience. We spent quite a long time there and not only weren't rushed, but were encouraged to stay...bringing us not only a complimentary appetizer at the start of our meal but also a local brandy/liqueur when we had finished with dessert and espresso. The whole experience was divine and we will never forget this lovely spot and our gracious host!

Tip for finding this hidden treasure: When facing the courthouse, go to street at left and follow until passing Melo (travel agency). Reserva is in back alley directly BEHIND Melo...Travessa do Arterra no. 1.

“Great Dining Experience”
Reviewed May 11, 2014

Everything we ordered was delicious (cured meats, cheese, mushrooms, potatoes) and we really enjoyed the recommended wine. As other reviewers have noted, the staff were also excellent. Highly recommended and different than the majority of food we had in Ponta Delgada. Definitely suggest making a reservation.

“An awesome find!”
Reviewed May 11, 2014

We were in Ponta Delgada for a day in April on a cruise. It was my husbands 60th birthday that day, so I wanted to find a very special place to go for his birthday. I made lunch reservations for us and our friends weeks in advance, and we all spent several hours at the restaurant. It was one of the highlights of the trip. Bruno the owner spoke good English and he talked to us extensively about the Azores and Portugal, plus the wines and food. We let him chose our wines and foods as we wanted a very authentic experience.
What we found out when we were there was the restaurant is normally closed Sundays but he opened for us. Unbelievable. The wines and food were amazing. We had homemade meat pates and various different homemade sausages and cheeses. We had olives and sauteed mushrooms and honey cooked tomatoes, plus a salad. Wonderful fresh bread. They even made my husband a birthday cake which they served with champagne.
The restaurant is lovely and romantic and the walls covered with shelves of many many types of wines. I am amazed on a ship of about 2000 passengers I was the only one who found this place. We spent 12 days on mainland Portugal after our cruise and nothing compared to this place. The service was excellent as was the value.
It was an experience I won't forget! Thanks for making my husbands birthday so very special!
