Firstly, we didn't know what to expect of the Azores, it was just the last port of call on a world cruise on P&O Arcadia. We were travelling with another couple from Australia, and as we could have 6 in our van, we finally convinced an English couple to join us. Some were getting off the ship and were "too tight" to pay for a tour, they were just going to wander around the town, and I can say that anyone who didn't venture beyond the town totally missed out. Wow, were we amazed and impressed!! It quickly became one of our favourite ports of call, and we haven't stopped talking about it. Clean, green, rugged, no graffitti---it was like one big lovingly cared for garden. What made this port even more special, was our awesome and charming tour guide, Rui Medeiros. Nothing was too difficult for Rui. He patiently showed us every wonderful area his amazing island, took us to a fantastic "out of the way" bakery, provided a knowledgeable tour of a tea plantation, and stopped by a corner pub to sample the local beer. If you visit Ponta Delgada...and you should...book a tour with Rui Medeiros! He is a brilliant tour guide, and the tour is worth every penny!
