Furnas is a must stop for anyone in Sao Miguel. The town is small enough to easily walk all around, there are two beautiful churches and several nice restaurants. This town is well worth a few hours stop over to explore.

Upon arrival at this location in the pouring rain I confess I was unfortunately unable to make the most of it and see many of the attractions enjoyed by others. All I saw was people asking me for admission and no places left to bathe in. I am a Geo-tourist and Furnas was to be one of the highlights of my visit, having never seen hot springs before. I have since read reviews by others about this attraction and I think I should come back to take a second look on a future occasion. Honestly, sometimes the rain on this island can be torrential!

You must visit the Furnas Lake and gardens and taste the "Cozido das Furnas" - a local dish well worth it, served in large portions.
Becareful when visiting the geysers as there is no protection, so don't get too close.

Furnas and its lake are a wonderful experience. Walk through the mountainous paths reminiscent of Switzerland -- green pastures and grazing cows, then sneak through the forest and over a hill to amaze your senses! You will first smell the sulphurous air, then notice the smoke emanating from the rocks, only to be further impressed by the sound and sight of puddles of water boiling at your feet! If you are so inclined, take a dip in one of the many geothermal hotsprings and let your stress slip away! The hiking path and main town are accessible by bus from Ponta Delgada making this a great day-trip.

Furnas is amazing - you should plan to allocate at least 2-3 hours to swim in hot springs. It is definitely the place to return for relaxing treatment! Towels are provided if you visit Dona Beija springs. Costs 2 Euro per person, but you can use the ticket for the whole day (with repeated entrance)
