Compared to the all there is to do at Furnas, including the geysers, fumaroles and hot springs, the marvellous views of Furnas lake from the Miradouro do Pico do Ferro and the walk round the lake itself, and the fabulous views of Sete Cidades from the Miradouro in the Parque Lagoa do Canario and from the tracks and paths in both directions around the rim of the crater, Lagoa do Fogo was a bit disappointing. Looking again at my photographs made me realise that the views were more spectacular than I recalled, however there only seemed to be the three main view points from the road. I think we stayed 10 minutes looking at the fine vistas of lake. We spent about two or three hours at Sete Cidades and more than that at Furnas. One book describes the Lagoa do Fogo area as a bleak inhospitable region, where clouds scud over the mountaintops, and a cold wind may be blowing …if so, continue straight on for Ribeira Grande (Sunflower Landscapes, Azores Tours and Walks, 2012).
