Attraction details

On a clear day, such as the day we visited, the lake viewed from the Mirador is tranquil and very pretty. However part of the overall attraction was also the drive up from the north coast of Sao Miguel, the vegetation is quite different from other Portuguese Islands such as Madeira and well worth the drive. Unfortunately we were on a conducted tour and we really should have hired a car instead as there were a number of places where we would like to have stopped and explored in greater detail.
The lake itself is well worth a visit, and it is a pity that it is not more accessible. It is a good walk just to get to the edge of the lake, something we would have liked to have undertaken, but the path is really only for those who come prepared with the correct walking equipment and stamina, certainly not for those with any form of physical impairment.
Continue past the lookout up to the highest point on the road, here the swirling clouds enveloped us 1 minute and dissipated just as quickly. From this point you can see how narrow the island really is as you can view the north and south coasts with the naked eye from the same vantage point

My favorite lagoon in S. Miguel, Azores! Take a good camera for photos. If you go there in a bad weather moment, try again later (as weather changes quickly here) or in another day because really worth it!
There is a path to go to the bottom. Do it!

The lake is beautiful but inaccessible by road. I think one of the few trails (or maybe the only trail) to the lake take 4 hours long and is 12km. The lake is up high and tends to get foggy unless you go on a very clear day. It's too bad that you can't get to the lake easily because it looks like there are some nice sandy beaches down there!

It is quite an experience to see the landscape of this vulcanic area. Just go there and experience it!...

Like many places higher up on the island; it can be foggy and that can spoil your visit. But when it is sunny: it is one of the most beautiful places on the island.
