On a clear day, such as the day we visited, the lake viewed from the Mirador is tranquil and very pretty. However part of the overall attraction was also the drive up from the north coast of Sao Miguel, the vegetation is quite different from other Portuguese Islands such as Madeira and well worth the drive. Unfortunately we were on a conducted tour and we really should have hired a car instead as there were a number of places where we would like to have stopped and explored in greater detail.
The lake itself is well worth a visit, and it is a pity that it is not more accessible. It is a good walk just to get to the edge of the lake, something we would have liked to have undertaken, but the path is really only for those who come prepared with the correct walking equipment and stamina, certainly not for those with any form of physical impairment.
Continue past the lookout up to the highest point on the road, here the swirling clouds enveloped us 1 minute and dissipated just as quickly. From this point you can see how narrow the island really is as you can view the north and south coasts with the naked eye from the same vantage point
