Set on the harbour and housing everything to do with the industry from it's beginning to the end of the trade in the 1980's

Some great exhibits and the video was very informative.

Free entry on Sunday's and well worth a visit.

“Don't miss when in Lajes do Pico”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 14, 2013

Nice museum which is in fact bigger then it looks. Especially make sure to watch the video about the history of whale hunting. Entrance fee is just 2,50 and free on sunday. Just keep in mind the different opening hours..
The museum offers a small library, permanent exhibition about whaling/whalers and temporary changing art exhibition.

“bigger than it looks”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 3, 2013

the entrance is small, but the inside is modern, well laid out, and has many displays of items and even a boat used during the active whaling days. There is a movie in English and the displays also have English descriptions. Well worth the few Euro they are asking for admission.

“Very very interesting museum”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 3, 2013

During our stay on Pico we got a voucher from the whale watch company to visit the whaler museum. Well it is a great museum that shows you the doings of the whalers in earlier times. I know that it is without discussion a terrible thing that happened everywhere with the whales but here on Picos the fishermen never used the very modern harpoons but did all as it was always done. So if you go there put aside you thoughts about killing whales nowadays and just look at pictures and things they used without any judgement. Then the museum is really admirable. The museum is bigger then you can tell from the outside. There are 2 floors and it is full with all kind of things they used and pictures.
We loved it and we are really whale lovers and think that nowadays killing whales should be forbidden totally.
