“Unique !”
Reviewed May 27, 2012

You must go there. The sleeping vulcano (since 1958) is at a unique place. Just by the sea you'l think you are in the moon, There's no vegetation. Only the grey ashes of the vilcano. You can also visit in the subsole the museum where they explain everything about the great eruption of 1958.

“Witness the earth formation in first hand”
Reviewed September 12, 2011

When in first arrive to Capelinhos site, you are overwhelmed by the abrupt landscape change, coming from Horta and the luscious green fields you are presented by the road passing to a desert like view.

At first sight you can see the remaining part of the volcanic cone and a lighthouse, but is underground where you can enhance your experience by visiting the Interpretation Center.

There you are able to see a 3D movie about the earth formation, several rooms dedicated to the Azores formation, others about volcanism in general.

The Interpretation Center it's a must see by it self. The architecture it's extremely unusual. The best: the profound knowledge of Azores formation and volcanism.

Bring windbreaker, it's very windy, especially at the top of the lighthouse you are able to visit at the end of the tour. From Horta to Capelhinhos and back three hours should be enough to slowly appreciate this attraction. If you want you can walk through the moon like landscape and explore the freshly created land, add two more hours to the trip then.

“Should not be missed!”
Reviewed May 29, 2009

We visited several craters on Faial, and in particular enjoyed the west end where the last major volcanic activity occurred. The eruption occurred from 1957 to 1959 enlarging the island by 2.4 km² and forming the "Ponte dos Capelinhos."

Today the area has an outstanding, new, state of the art interpretive center that has only been open for about a year. Exhibits include English language text and the wonderful 3-D video is offered in English at certain times of the day. The cost of admittance is 5€ per person. There is a nice snack bar, and a gift shop on the premises. This is a great place to learn about all the islands as there is a wonderful island display.
