“First class hotel a short walk from the city”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 15, 2014

The Hotel Colina des Mouros is set a little apart from the town of Silves, separated by the Roman bridge over the river. As it is also set back from the road, it's a very quiet location. We had a nice enough room, with a view of the town, but not special. On the other hand the hotel has an excellent swimming pool set in a spacious garden, with helpful bar service. Breakfast was OK apart from disgusting coffe from a machine.
Silves is famous for its Moorish castle and Baroque Cathedral. We made the steep climb to see the Cathedral twice, only to find it closed both times. On the other hand the castle was a rewarding visit, even in great heat.
The cost was surprisingly low for such a hotel, perhaps because Silves is some distance from the ocean.

Thank you to the friendly reception staff who were always helpful with bus routes and information. We thoroughly enjoyed our week break at the hotel, just arrived home yesterday.
I checked out the trip advisor reviews before I booked which I spent some days choosing and found for the price this hotel the best for what was available.
Advantages to this hotel -
Quiet location and seems safe
Lovely gardens and pool area
Clean hotel - rooms looked after and cleaned every day
Nice views
A place to relax for a rest
Nice food
Drinks reasonably priced
When we left we had a feeling of wanting to come back
Accommodated children and responded to requests
Building in good state of repair

Disadvantages
Probably not the best for young children but this can be managed and we felt considering the circumstances in the Algarve at present it was safe as not many people around.
Only one TV station in English - Sky News my child kept on flicking through the channels saying 'I will find Bugs Life' even though I couldn't convince him he wouldn't !
No WIFI around the hotel but actually I think it was good to get away from all that WFI tech rubbish which we all get tied up with - I don't think you need it on holiday. I would rather have a cheaper relaxing holiday. Had to wait a while between meal courses when big groups of Polish arrived for a two night stay, other than that only around 10 others seemed to be staying there in between.
The big thing for us was transport - the buses are complicated although everyone helpful the lady at the EVA bus information ticket office in the town was very helpful but still it was hard work, best to hire a car really but I didn't want to drive as I drive for work. You could easily spend £100 on bus fares to explore the resorts in 6 days.
Food - nice but sometimes the same each night (especially the starter) difficult with a young child as evening meal starts from 6.30pm. We worked with it and it worked for us just for the week but hard work for the young one I think. Breakfast was continental with cereals, cornflakes, bran flakes and muesli. Coffee awful, but English Tetley Tea and hot chocolate which was good. Swimming Pool not heated and was cold but some would say I am whimpish over that! There were some people in it come the end of the week when it was 29 degrees outside temp. Had to pay for a safe 2 euros a day with a 25 euro deposit.
Weather was hit and miss although much better than the UK so didn't bother me coldest 23 degrees hottest 29 degrees with very very short blast of drizzle for half an hour on one day.
Nothing in this life is perfect but this could be close to it for what we wanted. Time away from the UK weather and hassle.

I'd go back tomorrow if I could - I will be thinking about all the good memories we had there thank you
Just to point out Silves nice at night, Lidl's excellent only 5 mins walk - check out the 1 euro wine!, explore the castle, and restaurant in it, the tourist info. box where you catch the bus very helpful, train 5 or 6 euros by taxi, which will take you to Lagos. Albufeira only accessable by bus due to resort is miles from the station - didn't try the train this is what I have found out!

Room Tip: Ask for bottom level (-2) it is swimming pool level- restaurant is on ground, there are 2 lifts

This hotel is OK. Clean and the room had a nice view of the castle, but the hotel has no real charm or character. Breakfast is very boring. They also charge for wifi, which seems crazy when most of the bars and coffe shops in town have it for free.

Stayed at Colina dos Mouros from 13th - 16th June for a short break. Hotel has wonderful views over the castle if you are located at the back of the hotel. Breakfast is simple but ample for your needs and other meals from the daily menu are not overpriced at all. Silves town is a short walk over the Roman bridge and worth a visit and walk around the streets. Various restaurants can be found there and food and drink are very cheap indeed. For a change of scenery we travelled to Armaco de Pera by taxi (20 euros) where there is a lovely beach and again various places to eat which are incredibly cheap. The only problem that we experienced while we were there was that we could not confirm the pick up arrangements with Green hopper bus company despite several attempts trying to log on to the internet and the reception staff trying also over the weekend. This ended with having to pay for a taxi back to Faro airport at a cost of 88 euros but not the Hotels problem so please be aware if you are using shuttle arrangements from the airport!

Room Tip: Pay the extra for the view over the castle.

We stayed in this Hotel on 26/7 May as it was the start of our walking tour. The hotel staff were ok but never went out of their way to do anything unless it was absolutely necessary. The breakfast was basic and even though the staff knew there was a big group leaving early and everyone was standing around they never made any effort to bring the rolls, yogurt etc through any earlier than the stipulated time.
The hotel is in a fortunate position in that it lies right below the castle which if lit up at night and very beautiful.
Otherwise the hotel is very basic with funny old sheets and blankets.
I would not even consider having dinner at the hotel.

Room Tip: If you don't have a room facing the castle - don't bother going.

We were very comfortable on the outskirts so quiet yet only five minutes walk from the old town. The view looking towards the town with the castle and Cathedral is super including at night when floodlit. We booked for a quiet week and took half board. Although the meals were OK with limited choice, if we were to return I would prefer to eat out as there are plenty local restaurants within five/ten minutes and all appear to be reasonably priced. The swimming pool is round, clean but not too big. In the high season it might be a bit cramped for swimming!

Having said that it was lovely and quiet there is one very important qualification:- the dining room chairs are heavy and tend to be pulled a lot by staff and guests. If you are in a room anyway beneath the dinning room you will be rudely awaked by the noise. Try and avoid if possible room 201 to 203.

Just come back from a wonderful 8 day stay at the Hotel Colina does Mouros, Silves. Fabulous location over looking the city (although seems more like a large friendly town). Absolutely outstanding views of the hotel gardens, Citrus groves & wild countryside & not to forget the wonderful views of Silves Cathedral and Castle (flood lit at night). If you are into nature, this hotel is ideally located for visits to the Western and Eastern Algarve's nature reserves & to the wildlife famed areas of the Baixo Alentejo only an hour to the north of Silves. The hotel and the surrounding countryside as well as the town itself is excellent for wildlife as well (with at least 10+ White Stork nests visible from the hotel rooms and Bar verandor in summer) as well as Pallid Swift, Red-Rumped Swallow, Serin, Sardinian Warbler, Spotless Starling, Cattle & Little Egrets as well as Purple Heron & Azure-Winged Magpie seen daily from the hotel with the possibility of Short - Toed Eagle, Black Kite & Bonelli's Eagle and a good ramge of butterflies also seen during our stay. The hotel is very clean. Wonderfully set out and the staffare very friendly and in my experience always happy to help in any way they can. Good choice of Bar snacks available from noon to midnight daily. Good breakfast served for a descent length of time to suit almost all during their holiday. As I am in a wheelchair I can highly recommend this hotel to disabled travelers as it has a ramp for easy access and also has a lift to bother the lower and upper floors (although it is a tight fit! & I am not a large person). If you have some mobility out of your chair then the rooms are reasonably accessible to (But again the bathrooms are a little tight). But in my opinion this is a very minor thing to such a great hotel! I can highly recommend this hotel for a holiday & although getting into the city by chair is hindered by a tight path on the bridge in. Taxi's are easily available and reasonably cheap. I will definitely be going to the Hotel does Mouros again in the future. Thank you to José Matos and his staff for a very enjoyable week!
