This was our first foray into the design hotel experience. The all white, stark decor and the aloofness of the staff can be slightly off putting, but at the same time provide the sensory deprivation required to truly absorb the stunning vistas. We felt as if we were on the edge of the world.

The sumptuousness of the breakfast was unexpected in the otherwise minimalist atmosphere. Also suprising was the frigid temperature of the outdoor pool. Surfing instruction was awesome even for we forty somethings; hang ten Marta! Also appreciated were Karina's recommendations for delicious local cataplano and a relaxing, uncrowded beach day. This place makes good sense for couples looking for some isolation and relaxation, but I have a hard time seeing it as a place for families with children, although we did see some European families.

Room tip: We booked a suite as it was the only room available, but it was for too expensive and completely unnecessary for a couple travelling without children (two rooms, a kitchenette and fold out couch). We would have been fine in a standard double with a sea view and single balcony. I also noticed that prices went down substantially if booked last minute.

The Memmo Baleeira is the most wonderful place to stay.Cool contemporary hotel with the most amazing views of the Atlantic.The pool area is gorgeous and so quiet,even in high season.We stayed here for our wedding anniversary and were given a huge suite with a terrace which was even bigger.After dinner we returned to our suite to find a bottle of champagne with strawberries and chocolate.We can't wait to return for next year anniversary!

* Nice rooms.
* Common areas don't meet expectations (breakfast restaurant, gym, pool etc are way to small for the size of the hotel in high season).
* The hotel is big (a lot of rooms) - too big for a design/boutique hotel feeling
* Wifi only at the bar/reception (not in rooms), which results in a full, but completely silent bar since everyone is logged on on their iPads etc.

The Memmo Baleeira has everything you could ask for a great stay at beautiful Sagres. Definitively the best choice in all surroundings..

Room tip: Ask for a front sea view. The difference is worth it. The sea, the sun and in the evening the moon.

My husband and I spent a week here and were impressed with the beautiful setting, fabulous hotel and friendly staff.

Sagres is wild, wind swept and above all very quiet. Which is exactly what we were looking for.

If your perfect idea of a week away includes long leisurely breakfasts, lying out by the pool or on the nearby beaches and cliff-top walks then this is the place for you.

Room tip: Ask for a room with a sea view
