“Lots to do!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 23, 2013

This resort was wonderful! There were a lot of things to do. We enjoyed tennis, bike riding, going to the spa and beach, the M bar (and bartender Danny), the lovely grocery store, going into Sagres for dinner (try Mum's!), relaxing on our porch which overlooked the sea. Service was great and the housekeeping was excellent. Would definitely love to return!

There are some fantastic things about this place. It's a nice resort, the pools are great (and heated) and it's brilliant being somewhere where kids (toddlers) are so accepted and looked after. We had a great meal at As Dunas, where they even provide a staff member to entertain kids ... the beach is lovely, and because everyone is there with similar intent it's a friendly place. The kids had a great time, and are now destroyed after a week of swimming.

The villas are lovely... Bay villas are really nice, well equipped, lovely balconies... All round very comfortable. I am totally sold on their enormous beanbags.

But... I just couldn't get a grip on the delivery of the whole thing. It seemed that it needed the management to do some mystery shopping, while pushing two kids around.

Service is, as others have noted, patchy enough to get irritating. If you've got toddlers, you know that you are time limited... Maybe you've got half an hour to grab a beer? Or 10 minutes for a sit down and a coffee? Or it's just that the kids need drinks - they really need drinks. That is not going to work here. A few examples... We waited 30 minutes for drinks in the Italian on our first night, with kids bored and thirsty; 20 minutes for a pint and a coffee in the M bar (with two people serving and no other customers! Honestly, they both worked on our order)... I had the 23 euro breakfast on one day, and it took 4 conversations with different people to get tea and milk on the table. This is not (always) while the staff are busy... It's while they are laying tables or lighting candles instead of serving.

Plenty of things seemed not quite thought through. Eg... There are no signs to tell you how to get into the pool in the centre of the village. After exploring, there is a single gate with pool rules on it (looks promising!) which your access card will not open. You go into the building alongside the pool, and find a door marked "Swimming Pool". It's locked, permanently. You wander around and ask a member of staff. They explain that you have to enter through the changing rooms. But... If you have a buggy, a member of staff will open the gate for you. Remember... Every person in the whole resort is pushing a buggy.

There were enough little things like this to be noticeable. We had a great time, honestly... It's just that to be a 5* resort, charge top rates, and get 5* feedback, you need to get everything bang on, or close to it... You need to do a better job than me. I kinda feel they set their own bar very high and just slightly miss it by not paying attention to details.

Oh yeah... 10 euros for a cheese toastie and 5 euros for a loaf of sliced bread from the supermarket.... Ahem. It ain't cheap.

Finally... It really is for toddlers. Fantastic for a 2 year old but I would hesitate to take a 5 year old, although things may differ in school hol time when I guess there are more older kids around.

Thank you for sharing your lovely family experiences at Martinhal. It gives us great pleasure to know how much you enjoyed your stay with us.
As you kindly mentioned, we do take every aspect seriously and we also strongly believe that small details do make a difference. We are very glad to know how much you enjoyed the luxury and comfort of our Bay Houses as well as all our superb facilities, programs and activities for all ages!

We regret that the service provided in Os Gambozinos and the M Bar has not met your expectations. We are very sorry you experienced this as our concept is in fact to have a quick service for mothers, fathers and children. The particular week you were here was a week when we had some staffing problems in the M-Bar and Os Gambozinos – for which we can only apologise.

With regards to your comment on the entrance to the indoor pool in the Village Square thank you for bringing this matter to our attention, we now have the main door into the pool permanently open for easier access.

On your note regarding our prices in O Mercado, please note that it is a convenience store and we don't have the purchasing power of supermarket chains as well as many of products on offer are Gourmet and from top quality brands - as per our clients preference (information obtained from our Client Survey results). Our clients in general appreciate the wonderful range of products we do have in Mercado for their convenience, including freshly-prepared takeaway food - we hope you had the opportunity to try it.

We will continue to do our upmost to ensure that you and your family have plenty of reasons to love Martinhal and make us your first choice. We will look forward to the pleasure of welcoming you all again soon where you will experience our continuous positive progress!

We spent a perfect week in Martinhal. It caters to families with kids and it is amazing how much thought has gone into designing the resort. Not a sharp edge around all of the 4 heated pools, plenty of toys, entertainment, playgrounds and care for the kids wherever you go. We had a one bedroom self catering apartment which was lovely and appeared new. It was great to be able to pre-order a cot, potty, high chair etc. The resort offers plenty of activities for the parents too - I had a great time surfing, cycling, playing padel tennis and having massages. The area is beautiful and if you have a car you can explore the coast and dine out at local restaurants. The resort was full but we didnt feel that at all. Martinhal has got a lot of things very right. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, relaxed and will be going back!

Came back from an amazing 8 days at the resort it is truly a 5 star experience in terms of infrastructure yet do not expect the same level on the service side since it is such a huge resort you will have to do things on your own. What absolutely blew me away is how well the resort is designed to take care, entertain and have fun with small children. From the room layout to the furniture selection to the choice of lamps the entire room is even more baby proof than my own home yet it is very stylish and high quality. The restaurants have a play area where one staff member entertains the little ones while you sip your coffee, playgrounds are nearby so you can keep an eye on your children while you're finishing that bottle of wine. My kids absolutely loved the kids club and the staff in the entire resort is very friendly and respectful. The location is amazing though Sagres is more of a hippy town. We had bay apartments and could not be happier with our two terraces and garden. The only drawbacks were that you had somewhat limited service for ex no room service and you do have to pay for all extras. Plus some restaurants were full in evenings so we could not eat there without a reservation. Finally once you drop the kids to the club there is no adult-only area to relax without screaming children. All these little things bothered us a tiny bit the first day up until we became overwhelmed with zen and relaxation by the whole experience. We usually like to go back home after a long time out since our kids are 5,3 and 1 yet for the first time we did not want to leave and came back home relaxed and happy. We are already planning to go back next year can't wait!

What a wonderful week we had at Martinhal! We have a very active 18 month old son and have been looking for somewhere that he would love, but also somewhere that seems like a treat for us. We've found it! Martinhal is entirely geared up to provide luxury accommodation, food and surroundings for parents, whilst being perfect for toddlers. The thing that struck me the most, is the exceptional cleanliness! Everything was immaculate! This is no mean feat when hundreds of toddlers are around!
That said, the resort never felt crowded, just the right amount if atmosphere.
We didn't use the crèche, but will definitely use the childrens club next year, as we had a look round and our son loved it!
The beach is absolutely beautiful, and close by are some of the most spectacular beaches I've ever seen. All the swimming pools were lovely, and well designed. Decking surrounds them all for example which means there's not so much risk of toddlers running and slipping over.
I had read previous reviews saying that the service in the restaurants was slow and left a lot to be desired... We found the opposite. All waiting staff were quick, efficient and friendly, and brilliant with children. Our son had a minor meltdown one evening, and the waitress came over with a selection of little toys that kept him busy long enough for us to finish our meal. Each restaurant has a childrens area that is supervised or a little playground area, so it really is possible to relax whilst eating your meal. The food was generally good except my husband remains puzzled about his steak that was served with a fruit salad?!?
Fruity steak aside, we will definitely be going back next year, and hopefully we'll be able to stay longer than a week next year!

We are a family with a 2 and 5 year old in tow and visited in August. the Hotel looks very good, has excellent staff on hand at mealtimes to look after the kids while parents are eating but a number of annoying and frustrating things spoilt our stay.
Anyone who has to use a child buggy will find the cobbles, kerbs, steps and distances between restaurants, beach and in our case our room extremely annoying. whilst there are ramps available the extra distance is tiresome if called upon to use them.
Staff in most of the restaurants are very poorly trained, with a few notable exceptions we often had to ask 3-4 times for drinks, coffee or food orders and the wait was then often 15 mins.
There is no transport from the beach which requires pushing the buggy uphill, in fact any transportation between venues is not advertised although if you ask you may be lucky to get a lift in a golf cart if available.
There are no towels available at the pools or beach and consequently they have to be lugged around the resort which adds to the weight and frustration, especially with buggy issues listed above.
Sun loungers at the beach are charged at 15 Euros per day which isn't excessive but i'm not used to paying for this as an extra at what is supposedly a 5 star resort.
We were surprised to find that we'd been allocated a 1st floor room with access up a staircase in light of our 2 young children, this required carrying the baggy and gear up and down 2 flights of stairs everytime we went in or out of our room.
This could be an excellent choice for families with kids and it's obvious that some people are already impressed but in our viewed it missed it's target on many levels and management and staff need to try much harder to get the formula right if the Resort is to compete with much better options elsewhere.

Room Tip: if travelling with young children try for a room at ground level and close to the main square for ea...

Thank you for sharing your impressions on your recent stay with us. We have conveyed to our Senior Management your comments towards our walking paths when pushing your childs buggy.
We apologize for the inconveniences and we thank you for bringing this matter into our attention, we will be considering it during our winter Maintenance.

We regret that the service provided in our Restaurants has not met your expectations. Please note that your comments and impressions have been conveyed to our F&B Management Team. Nevertheless we apologize for any inconveniences experienced which have fallen short of the outstanding hospitality we always strive for and that certainly bares no resemblance to our usual standards.

On your note regarding the towel exchange policy (3 different exchange points on the resort from 10am through to 7pm) from we would like to inform that in order to follow a more environmental friendly policy, which we found very important, we decided to implement this procedure which has been widely accepted by our clients.

The sunbed operation is a beach concession whereby we have a limited space on the beach granted by the authorities for the summer months only. As the space and numbers of sunbeds and umbrellas are limited (18 spaces in total), a fee is the only way a guest can guarantee a booking or reserving his/her private and luxurious space. If we give this space for free for all guests of Martinhal, not all guests will get to enjoy this limited space given that some guests will reserve beds/ loungers for the whole day with towels/ books, and others will not get to use this very precious facility. Compared to many other beach concessions in Portugal, Martinhal Beach Resort & Hotel really offers a better quality of concession.

We regret to know that not all your expectations towards the location of your house were met and we apologise for the inconveniences experienced. To avoid possible disappointments in the future, please allow us to suggest that on your next booking kindly inform your family needs and expectations to our Reservations team. They will gladly recommend you the best accommodation available for the dates of your preference.

We hope you choose to give us another opportunity and find your experience very much improved.
