We are just back from a great ten days in the Algarve, staying at Martinhal. The party was my husband, me and our three year old son.

Resort overal: what can you say? Martinhal just 'works' for families with young children. I had found it a bit tricky to get the idea of what the resort was like, from reading other reviews where people talked about particular play areas or restaurants, but once you are there everything falls into place. For example, each restaurant has something for children to do right next to it. Each pool is near some kind of play area. The beach is gorgeous and so close to the main part of the resort.

Design: the aesthetic environment throughout the resort is very high quality and pleasing to the eye. Beautiful combinations of colours were used in our Ocean house, the foyer of the hotel and in various public areas. The planting around the resort is lovely, although obviously still developing, with swathes of soft grasses, lavender bushes and flowers. The changing areas in the pools were finished to a high spec, with gorgeous stone tiles on the floor. If the visual environment is important to you, then you will enjoy Martinhal.

Staff: the staff on the resort were universally polite, helpful and struck the right balance between being service orientated and discreet. Service levels were high, but without becoming intrusive at any time.

Children: we were travelling with our three year old, who can be a bit shy at times, so the facilities for children were really important to us - along with the opportunity to get a bit of couple time! However, it worked really well at Martinhal. For example, at Oz Gambozinos, the pizza restaurant in the square, there are some very sweet little play houses right beside the outside eating area - so he could pop over there and play whenever he liked. At As Dunas, there was a member of staff available to help children play at small tables to the side of the main eating area. Both options worked really well. This was in addition to the provision of evening entertainment - a bouncy castle in the square one night, the 'foxes' making their appearance now and then, circus demonstration another night...All great fun for adults and children alike.

The resort feels very safe and child friendly, for example, there is plenty of space between each table at the restaurant, so children can walk around without too much hazard. However, parents of smaller toddlers would still need to keep an eye on them at certain points - for example the edges of the decking leading down to the beach are not fenced, so smaller toddlers would need to have their hand held there. But this is to be expected and overall I felt very comfortable letting my child have freer range than he might have at home.

Kids Club: we used Raposinhos and would like to extend a big thank-you to Helena and her team, particularly to Filip who made particular efforts to engage our little boy. The provision seemed very safe and there was a good balance between the organised activity and the opportunity for children to play with the toys inside and out. There was a good range of toys, including bikes, scooters, push-alongs, a mini-kitchen, books and cushions to sit on.

Medical: in the first few days of our trip our son developed a minor ailment which was making him miserable and we needed some help to get treatment. I phoned Reception to ask advice on how to find a pharmacy and lo, they suggested that the resort's trained nurse should come out to visit! We had help from both of the nurses - Sophia and Fabio - who were both excellent, very well trained and good at communicating with both us and the reluctant patient. It was such a relief not to have to worry about getting to a clinic or pharmacy and trying to explain the problem in non-existent Portuguese.

Restaurants: we loved both As Dunas and Oz Gambozinos and found that the menu was sufficiently diverse to keep us happy in both places. We tried O Terraco, but found the atmosphere a bit formal and my husband did not really enjoy his steak - maybe we will try it again on a future visit.

Shop: the shop stocked a good range of products, a little of everything. Prices were high, but the intermarche is very close to the resort if you want to do a big shopping trip. Although we did not need to use it, I noticed that the range for babies and children was good - nappies from newborn to night time pants for older children, plus a wide range of baby foods such as Ella's kitchen pouches, organix rice cakes etc. The only thing that I thought might be lacking is nappy-rash cream - so take that with you if needed.

Suggestions:

Provide mugs in the ocean house kitchens - the tea cups are a bit small!

Consider making wind-breaks available for guests to borrow and use on the beach - I think these should be free of charge as Martinhal is a high-end resort.

Slightly extend the range of toys available at breakfast and As-Dunas - this is really good provision, but the toys are mostly for younger toddlers. A small box of Lego-Duplo would be easy to store/carry and would suit 2 - 4 year olds.

Stock drawing paper and colouring pencils in the shop - a toy that many children enjoy.

Include DVD players in the houses, rather than having them to rent.

Have some shared toys for the toddler pools - rubber ducks, watering cans, boats etc. Not everyone brings them or wants to buy toys then carry them home again, so shared toys would enhance the fun in the toddler pools.

All of these are just suggestions to improve a very good experience. Overall, we really enjoyed our holiday and hope to come back another time.

Accommodation: we were in a ocean view house, and sitting out on the balcony supping some pino grigio mooching on a bean bag with the sun reflecting from the ocean is brilliant. Well worth the extra pennies. Kitchen & facilities were lovely, the green that you see in the pictures is better in life than you might think, and the bathrooms are exceptional. No quibbles whatsover.

Restaurants: The buffet - well, if you like buffets, you'll like this buffet. We went only once but we don't really like buffets. The beach restaurant was really good. The italian one is shut outside of summer - they don't tell you this anywhere by the way! So we ate at the beach restaurant every night. Food was good - probably not commensurate with the price you pay, but not many hotel resorts are. Dinner for a family of 3 (2 adults + one toddler) with a bottle of lower/mid range wine is c£75.

The resort: hilly. quite windy. Foggy some days as well. When the sun was shining, it was brilliant. The beach is exceptional. The playgrounds are good, not great. The pools were cold, and not heated. We asked about this. They said it was because it was cloudy and the pool heating is solar-powered. They didn't quite see the problem with this configuration, and kept pointing to the temp. gauge that stubbornly said 25 degrees, despite the chattering teeth of the children in the pool. Again, it is lovely when the weather is 30 degrees; not so when it is cloudy, windy & foggy. Spa is well appointed.

The town of Sagres is boring and there is nothing to do there. Beach is good.

Overall, it's a lovely place and I would go back. On balance, the weather is a little too unreliable so I would only go back in the height of summer, and when the kids are a little past toddler stage.

Just returned from a fantastic week staying at Villa (7)38 in Martinhal. We had been down to Sagres before Martinhal was developed and loved the place - the West of Ireland with heat and we had always planned to go back to Martinhal which was just being developed at the time. Firstly, the Villa was a privately owned villa that can be booked through the hotel and entitles you to all the facilities of the hotel. It was in a prime location just overlooking the beach but with a sheltered deck area which means that you were not exposed to the winds that most reviewers mention but which were surprisingly absent during our stay. I am loath to mention it as it may drive up the price for when we return next year. During our week at the end of June, it was clear that most of the guests were parents of pre-schoolers and the resort is made for this demographic. The kids clubs, the kids and baby meals in the restaurants, the pools and play areas, etc are all hugely suited to younger kids and their parents. In all restaurants, a table with a baby chair in situ is the default setting. Where does this leave empty nesters or those with older kids? Stll in a very nice place. Going back to the West of Ireland analogy, Sagres is a magical place which does not have the "packaged" feeling of other Algarve resorts. The beaches are fantastic and the Watersports offering at Martinhal is first class for the older ones as is the body surfing (tip - don't be tempted to paddle with your sunglasses on as their are big waves lurking). There is no real heart to the town of Sagres but with Tripadvisor as your friend, it will be possible to find some first class restaurants - we loved Mums and trips to Cape Vincent are worthwhile. The beautiful town of Lago is about 20 minutes away, golf at Parque de Floresta is about 10 minutes away and Slide and Splash is about 45 minutes away.

Room Tip: Try Villa (7)38.

We spent 11 nights in an Ocean View house in June. I had extremely high expectations having read they had 'thought of everything'. We have two girls age 3 and 5 and no longer need much baby paraphernalia so we probably weren't quite as impressed as we might have been had we travelled with younger children. Having said that, the accommodation was excellent and we would go back. The shower gel, shampoo, conditioner and moisturiser were lovely - quite a herby scent so unisex, but I think they were irritating for children's sensitive skin so I used our usual chidren's products. It would have been useful to have a handheld shower in the bath to make it easier to rinse children's hair. The bedrooms had blackout blinds although light comes in at the sides. I liked that the towels and sheets were only changed every 3 days unless you requested otherwise as I don't like all the wastage in hotels. Also, we didn't change our beach towels very often as we were able to dry them easily in the house. It was great having a washing machine/dryer and airer. Dishwasher tablets were provided every day, as well as washing up liquid and cleaning products. The Intermarche in Sagres is good for stocking up - gorgeous strawberries and melons, and Birds Eye fishfingers! The shop on site is very handy for essentials and I didn't have a problem with the prices as it is a small shop - ice creams were cheap there.
It was very windy for our first few days, and also cold whenever the sun went behind a cloud. However, after a final extremely windy day, the rest of our holiday was hot and sunny with barely a breeze. I would not have enjoyed my holiday had it been windy for the whole time. On our first day we ate lunch in As Dunas and dinner in Os Gambozinos, and the following day had breakfast in O Terraco. Lunch and dinner were average quality food and poor service. Staff seemed inexperienced and unprofessional. There is a playground near As Dunas which was great for our 5 year old, but our 3 year old needed more supervision so we were up and down to the sandy playground throughout lunch. We did not go back there. We ate one more meal at Gambozinos and were well looked after as we had not been happy the first time. Breakfast was lovely but at 70E for a family with young children we only returned once - on our daughter's birthday, when they presented her with a pancake with candles and all the serving staff gathered to sing happy birthday. They also brought her a cake and a T-shirt later in the day whihc was a very nice touch. Our girls enjoyed colouring and playing in the area set aside for entertaining children with staff to look after them. They attended the kids club for a few sessions and mostly enjoyed it. Our eldest was a bit bored in the Raposinhos Club as it is for 2-4 year olds and she was almost 5. She was sometimes able to move into the Fox Club which she enjoyed more. They attended one sunset club and loved it. A minimum of 3 children are needed for the sunset club and this was the only night of our stay when another child was booked in - probably because most people had young toddlers and babies who would be asleep at this time. The circus entertainment in the village square was really good fun, for adults and children alike. The bouncy castles were a bit too 'rough and tumble' for my two who kept coming off in tears. It would have been helpful to have a daily page on the Martinhal web-guide which is updated with all the daily activities each day as it wasn't easy to find out what was going on every day. Weather forecast could be included.
I think all the pools are heated to a comfortable temperature. I would have liked more toys/slides (for the kids) but I assume others don't like this otherwise I'm sure they would have them. Perhaps they are tacky...
The beach was lovely and we found some others that we really liked nearby - Tonal near the fort in Sagres (lovely toasted sandwiches in the little beach bar), Zavial which has a lovely restaurant (closed Mondays I think), and Amado - this was my least favourite but was by far the busiest and popular with surfers. If it's windy, it's worth trying to find a sheltered beach. There are two beach restaurants on Martinhal beach, we preferred the one furthest from the hotel - staff were lovely.
We enjoyed a couple of meals out in Sagres - Villa Velha was lovely, and they were good with children. Mum's was great food but I wouldn't go again with children.
I am sure we will visit the area again although I'd be worried about the wind, and as we would probably approach it as a self catering holiday in future we would look at alternative accommodation possibilities - having said that there's a good chance we will return to Martinhal.

We regret that the service provided in our Restaurants has not met your expectations. Please note that your comments and impressions have been conveyed to our F&B Management Team. Nevertheless we apologize for any inconveniences experienced which have fallen short of the outstanding hospitality we always strive for and that certainly bares no resemblance to our usual standards.

We are delighted to hear that your daughter enjoyed spending her birthday with us and we were able to make it a special occasion.

With regards to the wind, please kindly note that we have done our best to build all our facilities in sheltered areas but, as you may understand there is only so much we can do for sheltering without compromising aesthetics and our clients safety. However, when planning your return to Martinhal, kindly note that the windiest period is between June-August.

We stayed at Martinhal for 10 days in June. Our daughter is 2 years old and I am pregnant so we wanted a stress free relaxing holiday. We booked the resort through baby friendly boltholes they were very efficient and we would recommend them. Although we only booked a room in the hotel We were lucky enough to get upgraded to an Ocean House. The hotel was being used for a wedding and so we were asked to stay in a house for the duration of our stay. The house was spacious and clean . The location was amazing as we were only a two minute stroll to the restaurant for breakfast , the pool and the village square. There was so much to entertain our toddler and we loved the fact that she could enjoy herself playing whilst we could enjoy our meals. My only issues are as others have mentioned :
1) the wind is relentless . For the entire 10 days of our stay we had to endure fierce winds , so we spent much of the time being blasted by sand grains on the beach or chasing sunhats down the road (i recommend taking a childrens hat which ties under the chin ! ) . After the sun went down it was also very cold so please take warm clothing if you plan to stay out after 7 pm .
2)We also were surprised to see most of the restaurants empty after 7 pm , so don't expect to see any night time entertainment.
3) You have to pay for the beach sun loungers ....
4) There are no bath robes outside of the hotel room so take your own if you are staying in the houses
Despite all of this we would stay at Martinhal again but maybe not in June as the weather wasn't great .....

Room Tip: Ocean house are close to all of the amenities

Thank you for your great review! Your comments are extremely valuable to us and they motivate us to continue to improve and to create lifetime memories to all our valued Clients.
On your note regarding the wind (normally more common in June – August), kindly note that we have done our best to build pools in sheltered areas. Nevertheless, we are constantly looking at ways to improve. The sunbed operation is a beach concession whereby we have a limited space on the beach granted by the authorities for the summer months only. As the space and numbers of sunbeds and umbrellas are limited, a fee is the only way a guest can guarantee a booking or reserving his/her private and luxurious space. If we give this space for free for all guests of Martinhal, not all guests will get to enjoy this limited space given that some guests will reserve beds/ loungers for the whole day with towels/ books, and others will not get to use this very precious facility. Compared to many other beach concessions in Portugal, Martinhal Beach Resort & Hotel really offers a better quality of concession.
We hope you choose to give us another opportunity again soon and find your experience very much improved.
