We enjoyed a lunch at this out-of-the-way café. The owners are Portugese and French-Canadian, and this is reflected in the menu. We all had sandwiches on bagels, and they were excellent and reasonably priced. The walk up the street was definitely worth it.

We visited Monchique today and were after a light bite and chose Ochala principally because it was away from the main square. We always find that the further back you go, the more likely you will experience quality as the emphasis is much more on the food than location.

This is a charming little tea room with an atmosphere of slight hippy /student /middle class modesty. Nothing fancy or ostentatious. The place just gives way to good honest food, fabulous tea and charming waiter service from a friendly Irish woman, perhaps the owner?

I don't hesitate to recommend the bagels, the homemade bread and if like me , you are vegetarian, you will find many choices from Greek salad to sandwiches. We will come here again next year for sure and try the delicious cakes we spied.

It looked like wifi is also available, a bonus when you are travelling.

Finally, always of supreme importance to me, the place was nice and clean and the loos although simple, were very clean also.

This was a very quaint and delicious cafe in Monchique. I had the carrot cake and my wife had the chocolate cake. Both were fabulous. The total cost was only 3 Euros! Our server was very nice and the atmosphere was very comfortable. Local artist Liz Allen had several paintings on display which really added to the local connection.

Great cafe with wonderful ambiance and fantastic food. We met the owners, Isabel and Christian, and could see the passion they have for making everything fresh (bagels, scones, quiche, etc.) I had the bagel with goat cheese, herbs, and an egg. YUMMMY!

Stay away from the tourist traps in the main square and take a 5-minute walk through the lovely streets of Monchique to get to Ochala. Isabel serves her own delicious home-baked cakes, quiches and light meals. And the coffee is only half a euro -- exactly one-third of what the guys in the square take. This place is unbeatable.
