“Could do with a make over”

Great location but let down bu poor service, out dated rooms, damp and no other guests. I wouldn't stay there again unless it got a make over, new management and more guests to add a little atmosphere.

This hotel is currently up for sale and I can see why. When we arrived the place was completely deserted. We rang the bell – no answer. We then called a local number and eventually a young woman came to give us our room key. I would have cancelled our booking at this point if we could have reclaimed our 60 Euro fee. Our room was extremely spacious and clean and had spectacular views over the mountains and down to the coast, but they really are the only positive things I can say about this property. We were the only guests, the bar and restaurant were closed and the swimming pool was empty. No staff were around, so you had to phone up if you had a query and the lack of other guests gave the place a very eerie atmosphere. The hotel was quiet cold and it felt damp and musty (paint was peeling off the corridors). The decor was also very dated. Breakfast was served at 8.30am (no window was given to take breakfast at a different time), but tasted OK. Given its location and a bit of TLC, this hotel could be beautiful. As it currently stands, it has been neglected.

We only stayed here for 2 nights, but would love to stay longer. The hotel built on the mountain slope, you can see the sea some 30miles away! There's a swimming pool located at the top level of the hotel, from there you get a good view as well. If you are up to a full on schedule holiday then this is not your type, as there's nothing else to do around Monchuque, other than relaxing, sun-bathing, swimming in the hotel and doing nothing.
Although the hotel is a bit dated, but if you choose the right part/room of the hotel, you could have an excellent experience. We first booked the cheaper suite, it was at the end of the hotel, the view is a bit blocked by other balconies. So we enquired if it was possible to change the room, then we've been shown various rooms that are available, at the end we choose to upgraded our booking to a bigger suite, the staff offered a very good rate to us.
The bigger suite we've got(75 Euros/night), has big bedroom and living room, both has doors to a huge balcony, the bath room is quite spacious, most importantly the suite is full of Portuguese charm! You can sit/laid on the private balcony sun bathing during the day and watch shooting stars in the night while sipping the wine.
Upon checking out, the manager grabbed a map and show us all the beaches and interesting places...we follow his suggestions and saw more of the Algarve then we originally planned! It was a great experience!

Room Tip: Go for the more expensive suite room. You will definitely find it is worth of money!

We stayed here for 4 days with our friends and loved the hotel. Great views of the sea from the mountain top and our balcony. The restaurant was excellent (try the pork with garlic, awesome!). We were offered an excellent rate (60 Euros I believe) for a One Bedroom Suite with a great wood burning fireplace.

We used Monchique as a base for touring the Algarve from Sagres to Faro. Worked very well for us. Excellent indoor community pool.

The hotel pool looked great and must be very inviting in the summer months.
