We stayed in Montinho de Ouro for 1 week in October 2011. We liked the quit location with the well kept garden and the swimming pool was very relaxing, with enough beds available. Our apartment on the first floor was very clean and spacious enough for us (2 persons) and the balcony had a nice view at the swimming pool. We didn't have breakfast or diner in the restaurant so I can't tell anything about the quality! There are so much nice (family)restaurants in the small villages nearby at the coast that we almost spend every night there for dinner. The staff is professional, but not very warm or approachable. We are travelers who like to stay on ourself, but if your not, maybe this is not the right place! We had a very pleasant stay and we will probably come back sometimes!!

We stayed at Montinho de Ouro from Aug 3rd to Aug 5th. The hotel is located in a quite area close to Lagos. The grounds are well kept and it has a small but nice pool. We stayed in an apartment which is simple but clean and very functional. The big disappointment for us was the dinner at the restaurant located on the property. We arrived at 8PM and asked if the restaurant is still open. We were told it is but they only have pork available for dinner, which was OK with us. The four of us - 2 adults and 2 children ages 4 and 8 - set at the table and were served a small appetizer plate with some olives and carrots. We had a bottle of water and 2 beers for drinks. Then the main dish arrived consisting of two plates each with 5 small pieces of pork and baked potatoes. The portions were very small so we each had 1-2 bites of pork and a few potatoes shared between us. The meal was well prepared, just lacking in quantity. The surprize came when the bill arrived: 65 Euros for the smallest plate of pork and potatoes & 2 beers! We really felt ripped off but too embarrased to complain about it. The guy serving the meal (who is also the cook) seemed really nice, but the value for money is really unacceptable... We learned a lesson and we will avoid eating again at the hotel restaurant, and in the future we will ask for the price upfront.

The place by itself is beautifull. At the check in me and my girlfriend were delighted with the pool and the night lights, plus all the silence and peace.

On other hand, the staff was a disappointment, all really rude, and made us feel we were bothering them, whenever we needed something. The lady who checked us in(we did check in really late), looked bored, and not welcoming at all. During the next day, either during breakfast, or a quick lunch we did at their bar, we felt like they were doing us a favour to serve us. The cleaning ladies argued with us because the rose petals they use to decorate the room got wet and stained the blanket(as it was our fault!), we felt really uncomfortable with the cleaning ladie coming at the pool area wondering what would have happened during the night with the blanket in her hands.

At the bar, we were charged 6€ for 15 minutes of snooker, when the price per hour is 6€.

As the title says, the place is beautifull, but i wish they could get a staff who actually enjoy working there, and dealing with people. Portugal is worldly known because of its people hospitality, but i don't think the people at Montinho de ouro are a good example.

I must confess that we come here regularly ,about 3 or 4 times a year. It is relaxing, pleasant little Hotel set in beautifull gardens complete with exotic fruit trees. The whole place is always immaculately looked after from the well cleaned rooms to the swimming pool. The couple who run it could not be more obliging and nothing is too much trouble for them. I usually have a self catering appt but many go for the B&B option. It also is tremendous value for money and I can certainly say that We enjoy our breaks here more than far more expensive Hotels. We have just had an overnight stay in Cornwall which probably cost me what it costs for a week in this place. The hotel is set away from Luz and a car is really vital. A five minute drive will give you access to some wonderful beaches as well as Lagos with its numerous restaurants. This part of the Algarve still is pretty wonderful particularly for couples and younger children.

Room Tip: Upstairs rooms get the best evening sun

Very well equipped, clean, warm, friendly apartment. We went in February 2011 and even swam, briefly, in the pool. We took 3 children and their highlight was picking and squeezing the fresh oranges from the garden for breakfast. Excellent value for money and a quiet spot.
