“Great stay and well worth every penny - EXCELLENT resort”
Reviewed June 15, 2009

We found this place through the help of a travel agent whom we gave a very strict list of requirements we wanted during our stay. We have a young child - 3 next birthday - and keeping her entertained for a two week period was going to be a challenge.

When the agent returned with this location, others being rejected after reading reviews on Tripadvisor!, we plumped for this one. We were not let down at all! The location is great - although not really walking distance to beach on a hot day with young children (but not sold as that). 15-20 mins pleasant walk into Town for dinner was easily achieved. The facilities were excellent including all four pools, children’s playground area, restaurant & bar, and especially the very friendly and helpful staff throughout the complex. Nothing was a problem and we were made to feel extremely special and very well looked after.

Do I have any criticisms? No not really! Everything was as it stated when choosing this apartment. The rooms were large and clean, bathrooms were cleaned regularly everyday and the free minibus service into Town every evening (except bank holidays) was an extra bonus. Pools were cleaned daily and always enough sun loungers for everyone by the pools. Even the food was excellent at the bar and the restaurant! A special thank you to Miguel who was easily the most helpful and friendliest bar staff over the whole holiday!

My daughter had a great holiday and made plenty of new friends by the pool. Loved the whole two weeks so much, she stills talks of going back to the apartment and not wanting to leave!

A very special holiday for us and one not forgotten in a hurry, all made all the better for staying at such a wonderful aparthotel complex. i hope this helps you decide to choose this resort as it truly was the making of our holiday.

And restaurants in Town - you MUST try Arrabelle - Rue de Barroca (Portugal’s oldest restaurant) and say "hi" to Rita - also check to see if my daughters' artwork is still on the front door!!! Also try the Navagador Restaurant - same street behind the main drag. The Chateaubriand is SOMETHING ELSE!

Also, attractions wise, a must for all children is Zoomarine (Guia) and also KrazyWorld (Algoz). Different ends of the entertainment quality spectrum - with the latter being a bit more rustic - but a great day had at both with excellent rides, shows, displays and interaction.

Yes, this was good acommodation. Appartments are clean and spacious, pools were very nice and clean, private and quiet enough. I don't know why it was rated at 3 stars, I would give it full 4 stars. Receptionists were polite and helpful and the soroundings are so charming....

This is a fabulous apartment. Without doubt the best we have ever stayed. The apartment was beautiful, the balcony was huge with 2 sunbeds, table and 4 chairs, big enough to spend the whole day on.The maid service was great . The staff were all lovely, very helpful and friendly.I would recommend this resort and in particular the Vilabranca apartments most highly. Will go back again......soon.

Me and my best friend just got back from staying at the Vilabranca Apartments (self catering) in Lagos. We were there from the 18-25th and we had SUCH a good week! The apartments are lovely, all the other reviews will tell you that. Ours was so much more than we expected with a fair sized kitchen (with oven, four gas rings, and cutlery/crockery), a big living space, twin bedroom, balcony and good sized bathroom with big mirrors - essential for two girls living together! The apartment was always kept clean and the staff at the hotel are really friendly and helpful. The pool is cold, but I still had a dip and it's October so I bet it's wonderful in summer.

Avoid package airport transfers. They're a bit tedious because they take two and a half hours and Vilabranca seems to be the furthest from Faro airport. But it's so worth it to stay there. There's a little supermarket opposite, "Super Eureka" (fab name), which sells everything you need. The fruit is so nice from there...and the wine isn't bad either...Town is a little walk away but it's fine to walk down and take a taxi back up. Every taxi we got was 3.90. But a little tip - Lagos is not a place for heels. Most of the streets are cobbled and the girls we did see in heels were hobbling along like idiots.

One day, we walked to Ponta de Piedade, the rock formations. You can also take a boat trip from either the beaches or the promenade to see these. We walked totally the wrong way! The rep's advice for this one is not great, it's right out of the hotel and straight on at the "Tulip roundabout". It's signed better this way. It's a fair old walk though, be warned. Take water and walk at the cool times of the day. Praia de Ana is on the way back, which is a really nice beach. Beautiful rocks, and there's a couple of cafes on it which are nice to watch the waves from with a beer or an ice cream sundae. The staff are slightly grumpy and can ignore you when it's busy though!

The other beach is Meia Praia, which is also beautiful but a bit of a trek. Apparently, there's a boat that goes over there but we never found this so had to walk all the way down to the harbour, cross the bridge then turn right behind Pizza Hut and carry on through the boat yard. Took a while but you arrive behind Linda's Beach Bar. This place is FABULOUS! The cocktails (we sampled both aloholic and non-alcoholic!) are fantastic and the food is great too.

The town of Lagos itself is very pretty, especially the old town. Once you get down to the promenade, past the fort, you turn right, crossing the road and you're next to this beautiful church (Santa Maria). If Santa Maria is on your left and you turn right off there, you'll come to one of the main streets for eating (Rue 25 de Abril). Likewise if you go straight on, you'll come to another cool street, Santo Antonio Church/Museum is up here. It's nicknamed the Golden Chapel and is worth a little look around as it's pretty and the museum is quite interesting. If you carry on down the promenade until you see the taxi rank and then turn in, you'll be on the busy little street where all the Portuguese hang out on at night. Go there after food for a cake/ice cream/coffee, it's a good atmosphere.

"Cilla Black Square" is also near here! There's a statue of a prince that looks strangely like the Blind Date queen. Just off this square, the main streets start like Rue 25 de Abril. Also, there's a brilliant liqueur shop here to get all the port you can carry to take home! The guy is really knowledgeable and lovely. Watch out for some free samples ;-)

Lagos as a town is not one for clubbing but there's loads of bars that are open late. There's a huge Australian population there, loads of young people travelling around and working in bars so we had a really good time in most places we went to! Eddie's on the main street (Rue 25 de Abril) was cool, always playing good rock and indie music. Also, we loved DC's, which is kind of on Rua Lancorte and Rue Candido des Reis. (Both busy streets with lots of eating/drinking places.) Both bars are for the younger travellers and people who like indie/Brit pop/rock/grunge type stuff, really cool though!

As for eating, everywhere we went was really great. We mainly ate seafood and it was cooked beautifully. One of our favourites was the restaurant NEXT to Don Sebastiao on Rue 25 de Abril. The fish was very tasty and the waiters are great! If you have the pleasure of meeting the two Miguels, tell them the Welsh girls say hello! The creppes and the port at this restaurant is also great. Sit outside and watch the world go by. We also ate at a wonderfully Portuguese restaurant near the harbour. Ask your rep because it's a great experience and the food was gorgeous. One night, we tried the Chinese restaurant on the "Tulip Roundabout" on the way to town. The food was really good but it was very quiet out of season!

If you have some spare euros, "No Patio", which is very near DC's, is a great restaurant. We put on our dresses and headed up for a bit of a classier evening! It's a cut above the others and a bit more expensive but very good food (especially the banoffee pie!) and a good atmosphere too. It's not pretentious, just nice and professional. We also loved Meu Limao, right by Santo Antonio. It's a tapas and wine bar, everyting was really good there, especially the prawns in coconut and the ice cream cake!

We did a bus tour one day around the Algarve. It was enjoyable but a shame to spend a whole day on the bus. Good if you want to see stuff though and can't hire a car. You visit Silves, which is very pretty. And the mountains, with fantastic views on clear days and the "end of the world" (Cape St Vincent) which is the South-Westerly point of Portugal - very windy there!

The weather was brilliant but at that time of the year, it's chilly in the evenings - pashmina and tights weather. So,it was overall a really good holiday. I would recommend it to anyone. Everything is pretty reasonable and the apartments are great value for money! There's lots to do, if not in Lagos then in surrounding areas, for all ages. I can imagine some people who want a proper clubbing holiday are disappointed but the weather was fantastic most days (about 25-30C) and the town is really endearing. Give it a try.

Just returned from Vilabranca apartments and I was very suprised by the size of these apartments, before we went I read that there was maybe an oven or microwave, but we had full oven and four gas rings. The kitchen was well supplied with utensils etc but no electric kettle but there was an ordinary one for gas ring. Bedroom very smelly could not put finger on it but had to hang clothes in main room as it seemed to permiate material. Did not venture in pool as it was very cold. We had ground floor apartment and had lovely grasy area outside. Staff were very pleasant and eager to pleas. Mario the bus driver very nice and helpful also. If your rep tells you to left out of entrance, dont as you will not find the beach in that direction. It took us nearly two hours walking and we are in our sixties to arrive at the beach which we would have come to in about 10 mins if we had gone the way we thought it was. Nothing to do in the evenings unless you go into town as there is no entertainment at the apartments and the drinks and food is very expensive. SWe used to walk down to the roundabout and go into Louis bar which was ok. Taxi inexpensive from town but we walked there and back most of the time as it keeps you fit anyway and then have a good nights sleep. Only one draw back was we arrived on Saturday and then had to ask for towels to be changed on Tuesday as you can imagine how wet they were. But all in all it was a lovely place and every apartment is for sale although at £175.000 a bit over the top for one bedroom apartment.
