If you are looking for a guesthouse with charm and something different, this is the one for you. The attention to detail regarding furnishing and comfort are excellent. It is quiet and comfortable.
It is a 10 minute walk into town, down/up hill but quite manageable. The breakfasts are super and of a high quality, not the usual cold meats etc, a really nice selection. Although we were not blessed with good weather the pools in both sections of the guesthouse are small and the seating area around them also tight. This is not a guesthouse to lounge around. Without exception the staff was friendly and helpful. Good touring spot and the town is super with a nice selection of restaurants.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with pool view.

I stayed here with my parents last year. The rooms are clean, spacious and furnished in a traditional Portuguese style. The location is good for walking to town and to the best beaches in the area. The breakfast was a varied buffet with something for everyone. The pool is a little small and there are few seats around it but the beach is nearby and the rooms have their own private balcony so this wasn't a problem for us. Overall the atmosphere was really relaxed.

We have just had a very enjoyable holiday at Dom Manuel. The environment as is evident from the images is exceptional for what has to be a built up area. The first thing one notices is the entrance to the hotel which is by an open garden corridor from the main street which provides fragrant shade from the heat of the day. The entrance to the reception and bar area is on the right. Further ahead is a shaded bower with bougainvillea enclosing outdoor tables for drinks and breakfast if desired. On the right are stairs leading to the garden pool and sun loungers. The pool is small but adequate. The really outstanding feature is the very well designed and maintained gardens which will make you think about whether you would prefer to spend a lazy day by the pool or go out somewhere.

At the garden level on the right is the entrance to the rooms. On opening the door with a card you enter what seems to be a large hall of a mediaeval Portuguese house containing suits of armour, paintings and pikes and shields and of course classical Portuguse tiles. . Although faux they do help to create an atmosphere which is less like a hotel and more like a grand house.
First floor rooms are entered from this level and second floor rooms are up a further flight of stairs.

Our room was a good size with a terrace overlooking the pool. The bathroom though small was adequate with a shower and bath. The room was well maintained and thoroughly cleaned daily.

Some of the reviews advise that you stay at Dom Manuel 1 rather than at the annexe Dom Manuel 2 over the road. We were shown the annexe by friends we met at the hotel and in my view the standard of the gardens and the rooms are not very different. Breakfast is at Dom Manuel 2.

The reception and bar staff were outstanding in their willingness to be of assistance. The bar closed promptly at 11.00 pm and the hotel was locked at the outside gates though guests were given the number code.

Food

The breakfast was very good. A varied selection of fresh and canned fruit was available each day. Eggs were hard boiled and tasty toast tit bits were provided along with a selection of meats and cakes. The bread was freshly baked and good everywhere in Lagos. Fresh orange juice and coffee was provided.

Restaurants

Dom Manuel only serves breakfast. This is not a problem as there is an amazing selection of restaurants both inside the walled town and locally. The town is perhaps a 10 miniute walk away and downhill which may be a problem on the way back particularly in very hot weather. One solution is to get a taxi on the way back. Good restaurants in the town include the Maharaja Indian restaurant, the Portuguese restaurant next door and the Xpreitaqui tapas bar which has particularly good coffee. The O Henrique allegedly Michelin Guide recommended was disapointing though popular. A lobster Thermidor came with rubbery piza type cheese and cold potatoes.

There are excellent restaurants within a minute or two from the Dom Manuel. The best is probably the Onda Norte with beautifully cooked meats and excellent fish. The chips are good as well and not the ubiquitous frozen thin chips you can find elsewhere. To reach it leave the hotel by the back door, turn immediately left and then first left and then right and walk a few yards to the end. The house wine is perfectly acceptable.
There is a good Chinese restaurant very close by, the Palacio da China. Leave by the front entrance, turn left and walk a few yards to the roundabout and you will find it on the right hand side.

The Beaches
Although the hotel is close to Praia D Ana we spent most of our time at Praia do Porta de Mos which has a good beach and excellent restaurants for lunch. We ate at the Campimar bar. Taxi fares should be no more than 5 Euros each way. but there is a bus which stops just outside the hotel.

A trip round Lagos

A good plan for your first day is to take a tourist "train" around Lagos which visits the local beaches and attractions such as the Marina.

A particular treat was to return to the bar in the late evening and enjoy the company of good friends we had made during our holiday from Holland and Germany.

Room Tip: Depends on your needs. If you are elderly or frail 1st floor rooms might be better as there is no...

We just came back from a week at the Dom Manuel it was absolutely superb. The hotel is small and is split into 2 sections the main hotel and then over a very quiet road to another part of the hotel both having small but beautiful pools. This hotel has been designed by someone with an eye for detail and has the most beautiful taste. It s definately a hotel for those who enjoy the company of adults rather than children. It was an attraction for us that children under 13 were not allowed although there were no children at all. The hotel room were a delight with tea making facilities aircon, satelite, TV and also a fridge. Staff at the hotel were very personable and friendly, and the breakfast was a lovely well presented buffet where you could choose to sit in or outside.

The town is approximately 10 minutes walk from the hotel and also a 5 Minute walk to the closest beach but you can choose to go further to other beaches is you wish. If you didn't want to walk the girls on reception recommended lovely Portugese resteraunts round the corner and even a nice Chinese !!!

I would highly recommend this hotel it was super

Room Tip: Dom Manuel 2 the first building is not as elaborate as the other designs but none of the rooms from...

Travelled from Lisbon to this hotel, was a quick 5-mins taxi ride from the bus station. The hotel is seriously beautiful! Very picturesque..Great location too, next to the shops, restaurants and beach. Staff were very welcoming, pleasant and helpful. They have an extensive choice of foods for breakfast and even served chocolate fudge cake for breakfast!! Shame couldn't stay longer.

Started to walk from the bus station but the cobbled pavement wasn't good for the suitcases so took a cab - just as well, the hotel is at the top of a hill. The receptionist was very nice, showed us the facilities and took us to our room which was past a pool and in a separate building. The room had a balcony overlooking the pool, and was very comfortable and well decorated.
We walked into the town, only took about 10 minutes but there is a bus stop outside the hotel if you don't feel like walking back up the hill later.
We were there in off-season and it looked as if the town gets full of late night revelers judging by the amount of bars, so this hotel out of the town would probably be quieter during peak time.
The breakfast was good, plenty of choice and fresh.
I'd certainly recommend the Dom Manuel Hotel.

I booked the hotel only a couple of days ahead. After checking in, the lady showed us to our room and only then I realised that the hotel was built like a holiday resort. The room we stayed is spacious and very tastefully decorated with all the amenities we could think of. There is also a lovely balcony overlooking the pool. As we've been on the road for a while, I did some washing and they dried quickly on the balcony. The breakfast is very delicious and plentiful.

The hotel is about 10 minutes walk away from the old town and there is bus service right outside the gate of the hotel if you don't want to walk. The only thing I didn't quite like about the stay is that one side of mattress protector seems to be made of plastic. It doesn't allow your skin to breath and it felt very hot at night. If they could change that, it'll be perfect!
