“Relaxing, friendly & clean”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 1, 2011

We stayed at Dom Manual for 1 week, the staff were extremely helpful & friendly and nothing was too much trouble, rooms were very clean and spacious, facilities good & pool adequate for purpose. Beaches are with 10 minute walk and same for the town. Breakfast had an excellent choice of food. Very quiet hotel and very secure. Excellent restaurants nearby especially the Trinidad just down the road, it may look scruffy but food was good and food and beer was cheap. (It is a place where the locals eat) Would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Would ask for a second floor room next time.

A nice quiet hotel, slightly hidden away from the main Lagos city/beach area. Has an interesting and tasteful Portuguese theme (one of the main selling points) and is definitely more for a romantic break for couples than for families (though we did see other families there). Extremely clean and comfortable, and good selection at breakfast. The location means you have to walk 10/15 minutes to get to the beaches or main city area (and uphill on the way back!), but that's the price you pay for a more quieter location. Slight downsides were that one side of the hotel overlooks a (nevertheless quiet) cul de sac, and that one has to pay extra for the sauna. But such things are made up for by the excellent professional staff (they even drove us to train station on departure because all the taxis were busy -- oh yeah, good luck getting a taxi for any purpose whatsoever if you visit in July/August).

Lovely Hotel with distinctive traditional decor, very clean, comfortable and generally quiet, apart from the occasional rowdy late night guest arriving back back after their evening out. The staff were friendly and pleasant, very helpful with lots of local knowledge and advice. The hotel was extremely clean and cared for, our room was spacious with a nice balcony overlooking the pool. Continental Breakfasts were plentiful, lots of choices, breads, fruit, cereals, cakes etc. also had a warm tray all served by friendly morning staff. The only downside for us (which is not much at all really) was the charge of 15 euros for the use of the room safety deposit box (and oddly a 15 euro deposit which is returned on departure) and the view was over the pool but also overlooked a cul de sac lined with other buildings. Lagos is a lovely town and we enjoyed our stay very much there and in the Dom Manuel. Lagos has lots of restaurants and bars to choose from but our favourite has to be "No Patio", run by an English Chef the food was delightful, reasonably priced and the staff were very attentive. Took bus trips to Alvor and Luz which are delightful litte towns with lots of restaurants bars and shops. On reflection we would have taken our driving licences to hire a car as there are nice places to visit further down the coast line which can be got to by bus but a car would have made it much easier easier.

If its traditional portuguese architecture you looking for this is the place. Its about a ten minute walk to town. You are welcomed to your room with a small bottle of wine, fruit and water which was nice after a long drive.

Stayed for four nights with my girlfriend. Very spacious rooms, neat and clean. Friendly but impersonal staff. The hotel itself is ok, but they don't offer what they sell. On their homepage they brag about: saltwaterpool, sauna, turkish bath and SPA. The pool is chlorinated (not saltwater), the sauna and turkish bath is extra charge, and the SPA is call-a-massuese to your room.

Breakfast is deacent, the coffee and juice offered with the breakfast is instant and syntetic - not a very nice way to start the day.

All in all ok - but heavely overpriced and more of a two star than a four star hotel.

We stayed at Dom Manuel Hotel from 27th August to 10th September in sizzling hot weather. We had a spacious room on the second floor overlooking the pool. Everywhere in the hotel was immaculatey clean, service was brilliant, and for us the hotel was ideally positioned in a quiet suburb aproximately 10 minutes walk from Lagos town centre and aproximately the same distance from one of the best beaches on the Algarve. The Dom Manuel is an ideal hotel for the discerning travellor. The hotel is very Portugese and everything has been thought of to increase the comfort of their guests.
There is outside free parking but hiring a car is quite un-necessary; outside the hotel is a bus stop. Fares are extremely cheap, and you can reach any number of interesting spots via train and bus, cheaply and very quickly. Breakfast at the hotel is excellent with choice of breads, fresh fruit, hot or continental buffet. However guests who want to spend their holiday around a swimming pool could be disappointed; the pool is very small and although convenient for an early or late dip, not big enough to for real pool lovers. Then again who wants to spend all their holiday around a pool - not me!
Lagos is a brilliant town. Its cosmopolitan, spacious, well laid out with a superb prommenade and marina. At night the restaurants are alive with diners and street buskers; eating starts early and continues into the early hours of the morning. The atmosphere is lively without being touristy - we saw no drunks, no trouble, and significently very few police. The restaurants provide fish, fish and more fish - but for the real thing visit cafe Loop over the bridge to the marina turning right to the end of a block of 'white warehouse type buildings'. Underneath a tin roof at tables with paper tablecloths you will eat the freshest fish on the Algarve. The locals eat there, the yaghtsmen eat there, and so do the 'top-end' ex-pats. I can strongly recommend Lagos and the Dom Manuel Hotel.

This is a no-frills, albeit good quality hotel in a quiet area of town. Our room was spacious and very clean with a pool view. Room charge included free use of the fridge, but there was a charge of approx 15 euros a week for the safe. The pool is very small with approx 14 sun-beds which were inevitably "reserved" at dawn by other guests - which to be honest were mostly Brits! Breakfast was typically mediterranean - bread, cheese, ham, eggs etc. but with unlimited supplies of good coffee. Again everything was very clean, albeit with limited personal service. Several good quality local restaurants within 2 mins walk but we preferred the atmosphere and choice offered by the centre of Lagos which is about a 15 minute walk. The superb beach "Dona Anna" is only a 5 mins walk away.

  • Liked — Very clean - well maintained.
  • Disliked — Small pool - limited number of sun loungers.
