“Beware - It's not as nice as it looks”
Reviewed October 8, 2006

We booked this holiday via Direct Holidays. The villas in the complex are very tired and need a good overhaul. We stayed in Villa 39. It was filthy. The maid changed the towels twice during our 14 night stay and didn't mop the floor once. I had taken bugs away wipes and was I glad I did! You are supplied with 1/2 a toilet roll on your arrival and that's it - you supply your own and your own soap. The satellite tv was non existent - in villa 39 you get CNN & Eurosport - the rest of the channels are german and you cannot get a remote control the change the polarity.

There is no microwave and as we travelled with our 8 month old daughter asked to hire one - they don't do microwaves. It took 5 days for someone to come out and fix the cooker so my daughter had to eat cold tinned food as I had no means of making her food for 5 days. The supermarket only opens from 9 til 1 and the woman who does it runs the snack bar too so you either have to hang around to get a drink from the snack bar or hang around the supermarket til she comes back.

Reception staff are really really unfriendly. Reception only opens from 9 til 1 and again from 3 til 7 but beware - they do not change traveller cheques - you have to go into Luz to change money.

This resort is quite hilly and has 40 steep steps from villas 1 - 14 up to the pool and snack bar. There are steps or a steep ramp up to reception. I would not recommed this resort for anybody with a baby or with walking difficulties but of course the brochure doesn't tell you about this.

We paid for a private pool - what a waste of money. There where so many chemicals in the pool my daughter took really bad nappy rash and had a really sore bottom so we couldn't use the pool - apart from the fact it was filthy too - full of dead spiders and flies. I did ask to get it cleaned and it was but by the next morning it was filthy again. There's no net to fish the dead bodies out with either. A total waste of £400!!

On the plus side taxi's are cheap and Luz and Lagos are beautiful. We spent most of our days here as the villa was so depressing. I'm looking at Lagos for next year but a word of warning - if you are thinking of booking monte sao pedro - don't. If you have already booked - enjoy - but don't be expecting 4* accommodation cause you aren't going to get it. There are only very basic facilities in the villa and if you go to villa39 take cleaning stuff with you - you're going to need it

We booked our holiday through direct holidays and for a youngish couple we got allocated a 2-bedroomed villa with private pool (villa no.46!).On our arrival to Faro the transfer did take a little over 2 hours, but didnt seem to last all that time.

We arrived at Montae Sao Pedro a little skeptical after reading some of the reviews but to our surprise the reception staff were friendly, we didnt have to pay any fees or deposits as some have suggested and a mini van drove us and our suitcases to our villa. From the outside it actually looked very cute and quite quaint. On the inside, sure a little basic, but what more do you need than some beds, an oven if self-catering, and a toilet!

Having said that, I say a little basic, I did have a TV (free of charge...although a bit small) and it had 400 channels...all in English.I even manged to watch Corrie and Eastenders one night! And my man got to see the footy scores.

We had a fully working BBQ which he used and it was great, dying line with pegs for clothes, and the pool was a good size too for the 2 of us. The gardens were lovely and well maintained, garden staff were very pleasant and turned up 3/4 days a week to water the plants but ensuring they disturbed you as little as possible.

Maid service was once a week, but there are bins etc outside to put your rubbish out.

The shop was only open 9am-1pm, but across the road (which I'll come to in a minute) is a campsite with a shop which is open until 10pm. We only sat by the other pool one day at the complex for everyones use. On our last day as villa check out time was 11am and our bus to the airport wasnt until 6pm. The pool bar had hot food, and juice. A little expensive for drinks, but food cheap and tasty. The pool seemed a good size too and the kids next to us loved it, as did some older couples who were also holidaying.

The restaurant was very tasty!! We ate there twice. I recommend the flambayed pepper steak and the spag bol and the stuffed chicken was nice too! Paulo and Miguel the waiter and bar staff were incredibly funny, and provided a joyful atmosphere to eat in, a lot of fun.

The bar at the village was a little small, but it had all the drinks for kids and adults a like. The special touch for us was seeing many football shirts up from our home town of Aberdeen. If you want quiet drink on your own go when it opens at 7pm for a drink before you go out, it's open until 1am but gets a bit busy about 9-10pm bearing in mind there are only about 25 seats. Nice though. If you have kids there is also a room with pool table, air hockey, fooseball, and some gaming machines.

Ok, so the road to Luz/Lagos. We agree...it is a bit bad. We attempted walking on our first day, alredy tired and narky with one another the road didnt help too much and it was quite late. We did eat in the restaurant that people have mentioned valverde on the way down. We werent that impressed though to be honest. Not being a big fish fan (which took up 1/2 of the menu, 1/4 being all steak and red meat and the other being random things like kebabs etc) then you are a bit excluded to eating. It was never overly busy, but the staff were very friendly and we did like the separate bar in the rstaurant too. I did have the veg soup (good!), chicken kebab (full of garlic inside, which I didnt know about, although quite nice I did smell for the rest of the holiday) and a pud, again, pretty basic but ok.

There is a dirt track, but having attempted that the following morning and a grasshopper running up my fiances shorts we decided to stick to taxis. 4 euros gets you to Luz (about and about 5-6 euros gets you to Lagos. Reception say there is a 50 cent fee for booking taxi, although we did see some people giving it, we were never asked for it .We thought we might pay on departure, but they never asked. The lady who works in the shop and pool bar (constantly doing sodoku) is a brilliant, she is often found in the pub later on too and we had a good laugh with her, I forget her name, Rosa I think.

If you like the beach, head to Luz.Nice cafes, and quint pubs, we liked the Bulls bar.Taxi's back are not as frequent as Lagos but a 15 minute wait should get you one. Theres never a queue for them they just drive past so stick out the arm. Lovely beach in luz though and nice evening walks along the prominade. Lagos is pretty, very cultural and has quite a lot of shops. Statues everywhere, dolphin trips (which was great!), the grooto trip was very enjoyable too (and for 6 euros each, cheaper for kids) we'd recommend it. The marina is lovely and we strongly recommend Do Cais restaurant and bar by the marina. It's recommended by locals and tourists love it. Do book in the morning though as it gets very busy in the evenings. They also have a lovely lunch-time menu with a wide variety of choice. Lazy jacks next door and another bar that I forget the name of are nice and you can have a quiet drink in a relaxed atmosphere or with music chilled out there too.

We didnt go to the beach in lagos but here it is lovely.

Hope it helps, we have photos too so get in touch if you'd like to see them, as it's taking too long to load them up on here.

  • Liked — A bit basic, but no beasties or creepy crawlies inside. Clean pool too on arrival, friendly staff.
  • Disliked — maid service only once a week, buy your own bog roll (a problem if the shop closes) and the double bed was a wee bit hard.
  • Tips/Secrets — Although a bit wrong, we took our own meat in our suitcase in mini coolbags as we heard there was a BBQ.All meat in shops is frozen, so if you intend to use the BBQ, take your own!

A late booking for my partner and myself proved a nice surprise on our arrival. We booked a 3 bedroom villa with Direct holidays which actually slept 8 .It was a 2 storey villa with 3 bedrooms on the ground floor along with 2 bathrooms and the living area and kitchen on the upper floor. This villa was cavernous compared to other places we have been.On the whole we enjoyed our stay here, the pool was a decent size and there was a toddlers pool. Not a lot of entertainment at night .The restaurant was nice but we also ate in Luz and Lagos.Car hire booked on the internet will expand your horizon also save on the transfer from the airport ,the roads and motorway are easy to drive on.On the downside the supermarked was small and stocked only basic items. On the whole we would go back again,a nice quiet little complex

  • Liked — the amount of space
  • Disliked — distance from the town approx 1000mts
  • Tips/Secrets — hire a car at the airport for the whole duration to sightsee -easy driving experience

We folllowed on from a previous reviewer and I would agree with some of their comments.

The private pool (which was an unexpected bonus as we had a last minute booking at a very reasonable price) did need cleaned. However we reported it and someone was quickly sent round and the pool was thoroughly cleaned every day thereafter.

We have visited this complex several times in the past but this was first visit for about five years.

I have noticed a slight drop in the 'freshness' of the complex but perhaps it was early in the season. The gardens of the Villas and the grounds are very well kept and overall the site is very attractive.

The traffic noise (we were also in Villa One) did not unduly disturb us.

I still think this complex provides a very good package. The restaurant provides good food and is reasonably priced. The on site shop is very convenient and also good value.

There is an excellent communal pool with pool bar providing a range of snacks.

Overall we had a great time and found the staff to be friendly and helpful.

My partner and I have just returned from a week at this resort, and although we had a lovely holiday and intend to return to the Algarve later in the year we will not be staying in Monte Sao Pedro again.

We arrived on Sunday evening after an hours drive from Faro airport. We discovered that the resort appeared to have just opened for the season.

The villa although, pleasant in style did have a damp smell, the facilities were quite basic, no microwave, no washing facilities, an old 14" TV with analogue satellite with the only English channel being CNN. On the plus side the bed was very comfortable and the hot water was plentiful, with great water pressure.

We soon discovered that our villa was extremely noisy due to the constant traffic on the main road which backed on to our garden. If staying here request NOT to stay in villa number one.

The first night we had a meal in the resort restaurant, the waitress was the only unpleasant person we met during our entire holiday, the food was poor, and the atmosphere was frosty, in fact we felt we were an inconvenience being the only customers.

The private pool was full of dead creatures (flies etc), making it unsuitable for swimming in and was not cleaned until the day before our departure. Although perhaps in hindsight we should have asked for it to be cleaned before.

The entire complex had a tired look, as if it needed to be completely renovated.

Car hire is essential at this resort unless you intend to stay by the pool for the entire visit. The location is ideal if you have a car ( car hire is very cheap and the roads are pretty good) but not so good if you need to rely on public transport and taxis.

To conclude, the Algarve and in particular the western Algarve is very beautiful and a relaxing place for a family holiday, however I would not return to Monte Sao Pedro and can not recommend a stay there, which is a pity because with a bit of a facelift and some pleasant staff it could be a lovely resort.

Just returned from Monte Sao Pedro Holiday Village. On the negative side, our arrival at the villa itself was disappointing. On opening the front door we were met with the stench of stale air. I don't think the place had been aired in weeks. Everything including the bedclothes was damp and musty. The villa was very cold on our first night. The majority of the staff we found to be anything but friendly with the exception of the reception staff. We felt very remote; you need taxis to get around. Taxi to beach €5-6, taxi to Lagos €6-7. On a six-day trip leaving the complex every day this could mount up. Might be an idea to hire a car. On the plus side the location is very scenic and quiet. We had a villa with a pool and the pool area was very private. The gardens were landscaped and well maintained.

We have just returned from a week here booked through Direct. The villa was as described in the other review, lovely and spacious, the gardens are genuinely well cared for and attractive and the pool area was nice to sit out in, the pool cold but you did get used to it! The restaurant looked a bit like an old folks home but the food was excellent and prices reasonable. I think you would find the menu a bit restrictive if you had to eat there every night which brings me onto the bad- The road running past the village is a death trap! We were there with our five year old at a quiet time of year but the road is truly scarey I do not advise it at all. We walked about 50 yards to the Valverde Restaurant to be absolutely ripped off, they obviously lie in wait for terrified walkers and charge inflated prices, two adult meals and a child's fish fingers, one jug of ok sangria (the fruit looked a bit second hand) and a dusty starter came to 52 euro - I kid you not so beware! Now for the ugly bit,,,I hate to say this, and we are quite well travelled, but the area is a major rip-off zone. Apparently it is seen as the "Yuppie" area, welcome back to the eighties. Because you are too far away from the big resorts the restaurants etc do not need to compete and feel they can charge what they like, even things like a bucket and spade in Praia du Luz was 10 euro. Having said that we did have a nice time, we avoided Luz with its 16 euro for sunbeds and parasols on the beach and stayed by the pool. Lagos was nice enough with some decent restaurants, shops were ok. We used the Intermarche here for self catering and it was fine. We had a hire car so ventured out to the Gaia shopping centre near Albufera and had a nice day out there, about a 30 minute drive.

So in summary, villas great, village fine, pool fine, location not great, general value for money of area be wary, people a bit grumpy, service ok child friendly again ok. Great for a pool holiday if you don't mind doing more self catering than eating out.
