“AquaLuz - even better than last year, family favourite”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 13, 2013

After our visit last summer, we decided to go again to AquaLuz with my wife's parents. Such a family friendly hotel, six of us shared a studio apartment (two bedrooms and a third based in the living room). Rooms are spacious, kitchenette small but adequate. The outstanding element with this hotel is the location; five minutes from Praia Doña Ana - amazing beach, only 15 mins walk to Porto do Mos and twenty into the centre of Lagos. The pools, gym and kids' facilities are brilliant and evening entertainment a little hit and miss (Lagos has so much more to offer anyway). Take advantage of the gym/personal trainers - free to hotel residents!

Room Tip: Not above the bar if you want to sleep before 11.

Please have a look at all reviews but beware they will not tell you the following facts:
-there is no iron in the room and you are not allowed to use one, instead you have to go to the other side of the hotel and endure the embarrassment in front of all diners and sun blathers with your laundry to pay for ironing in a hot dingy cellar.
-the in room safe has to be paid for with a hefty deposit for the key
-Hotel encourages obesity by refusing to serve diet drinks with menus
-The welcome drink is either a cheap glass of port or non diet drinks
-the WiFi is so slow you may as well write a letter and post it second class
-beware of promises of the free spa as you will be charged to buy mandatory swimming hats
-the subbed a are always full and the hotel makes no effort to meet the capacity requirements
-the themed buffet nights are a waste of money as the food is the same every night but different names
- the entertainment is a total shamble and singers will not even qualify the bathroom singing trial
-there are only 3 English speaking channels on these 1970's TV units. Two are news and one is ITV
-don't expect to get a decent sleep as cleaners star shouting in the corridors from 07:00 and the slightest furniture slides on floor above you resembles the landing of a helicopter over your roof
-the hotel is not geared for kids over 11 as they focus their activities on kids 90% of the time
-Orish bar and restaurants are mostly closed
-the book shelves are in the Irish bar which is mostly closed!
-windows and shutters in rooms don't work
-the bathrooms have no locks
-magnetic door keys are mega sensitive and wipe off constantly forcing you to go to reception to fix it
-the rooms have no instructions on using air conditioner and the settings
-buy a simple sandwich at the pool bar and expect 55 minutes wait time at its quietest times

These apartments are great.. was there 16th July for 12 nights & wished we'd done the fortnight, didnt want to leave.. Rooms are basic but have everything you need really..cleaned everyday with fresh towels & toileterries .We were on the 4th floor & had a good view of the pool & a bit of a sea view. Staff are very friendly & helpfull when asked anything.. Bar was a bit expensive so we didnt use it much at night & only had lunch there a couple of times which was really good but the food at night wasent for us or two teenage girls but we enjoyed trying out all the local eating places which are great..My husband & youngest daughter used the scuba center & they guys were great & took them out on a few dives with them, can be expensive but well worth it... one thing i really loved there was no holiday reps hovering around & the staff took the towels of the sunbeds if they were reserved early in the morning, wish more place would do that as its the first place where we have went to & had no problem getting sun loungers but I do think they should have more umbrellas & mayby the reserving of the sunbeds wouldnt happen...Its a great place for relaxing during the day & having the fun of the town at night.

We travelled in July and stayed 12 nights. The hotel is very clean with friendly staff and we had a great time. Our needs were based around a family, this hotel is geared up for families in terms of kids club and evening entertainment. The food was good (buffet in morning and evening) but the evening meals could be a bit disappointing if you were a couple looking for a romantic meal for two. The full board doesn't include drinks but the price of wine for evening meals was very reasonable. Some of the evening entertainment was excellent, jazz music and a flame throwing dancer, other evenings it was karoke, quizs etc.
The location is good, 5 min walk into Lagos old town, 10 minute walk to a lovely beach. Our kids had a great time, the kids club staff were excellent. Lagos old town is a lovely quaint town with lots of nice places to eat and small shops. We did the dolphin trip which was good fun and a trip to Splash and Slide (booked in hotel) which was excellent. The hotel organised transfers approx (85EUR) each way to the airport, the taxis were very clean and reliable. We booked a one bed suite which had one bedroom and a living room with a sofa bed for the kids. We had a small kitchen area. There is a Spar and a supermarket very close by. There's a spa in the hotel which we didn't use but the prices were very reasonable.

Just returned - In many respects this hotel is an excellent. First the good things:

Location: easy access to great town full of sights and restaurants and great beaches,

Apartments well equipped - kitchen has two hotplates, microwave and a fridge with freezer box large enough to stock up with ice-creams. Aqualuz supply washing up liquid and cloths. Bathroom has hairdryer and toiletries. Showe good, with a neat double hinged partition which can wrap right round.

The swimming pools outside are good, and indoor is awesome. You need swimming hats for indoor pool. You can visit the indoor complex once a day per person with a voucher from reception. With this you can go to the gym, sauna, steamroom and access classes free and a programme is available from the gym reception.

Daytime animation: good, water polo, volleyball etc and loads for kids.

Now the bad: Internet access was a real problemWe never managed a access the supposedly free Aqualuz network, and wasted lots of time in snack bar/reception trying. I bought 2 hours from the Fractalia network they sell. I managed to get online for 12 minutes, which made it an expensive purchase, Network drifts in and out, and while I thought I had logged out properly, when I tried to get back on my time was apparently all gone.

The other real minus is the evening food and 'entertainment'. Breakfast is great, but we tried a portugese night and were confronted by sad, soggy sardines, rock hard kebabs, and no entrocote. Music was bland 70's lift muzac most of which Portugal was not even guilty of.

Room Tip: High has better views, apartments face all directions around pool, so request NSEW if sun at a part...

Great location, 10 mins walking to town centre and 3 amazing beaches. Super facilities, large gym, 2 indoor and 2 outdoor pools, poolside bar/snackbar etc.

Staff really friendly and helpful. Daily room cleaning is good.

We went as a couple but found it very family orientated. Lots of kids in late July and no music by pool/bar made it lack some atmosphere. Happy hour from 3-6pm was great anyway though.

Lagos is beautiful but has no real nightlife after about 11pm. It's all café bars and restaurants (which are good - esp seafood) or dingy tiny backpacker bars full of hammered ozzies. Alvor and Praia da Rocha are both way better for nights out and are approx. 15/20 mins down the road by bus/taxi. All in all we enjoyed it.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking pool on third floor or higher. I think all rooms have a balcony facing th...

4 star amenities (large pools & gym), 3 star rooms.

First studio apartment was pretty awful. Walls were paper thin (you can hear everything & I mean everything from adjacent rooms), awful noise from appliances (fridge). Uncomfy beds & overall poor finish in the room, especially the bathroom. All noise from hall reverberates into the room (Ground floor). Shoddy aircon, the unit on the balcony was rattling worse than an early 80s MG. I can see the attraction for families due to the pool & kids play areas. Had to pay for a safe which felt a bit tight considering price of the room. Entertainment can be awfully loud & there is no avoiding it due to the noise around the whole complex, yet it finishes at 11pm.

Spoke to management about the issues & they were extremely helpful & pleasant. We were moved to a new room with minimal hassle. The new room was much better & at the rear of the complex so much quieter.

Hopefully Aqualuz will take onboard the initial review & consider renovation for some of the more shabby studio apartments.

Thanks to the staff for making the last few days of our holiday more enjoyable.
