“Excellent hotel, good location”
Reviewed October 10, 2011

We spent 10 day's at the Vila Gale and were absolutely delighted with the location and the hotel was easily the best one in the area. The Vila Gale is situated virtually on top of the beach and to access it each day is only a very light stroll away. The beach itself is quite simply stunning and one of the best I have ever visited. No stones, and glorious golden sand for as far as you can see. There are bars and restaurants every so often along the Meia Praia beach and one if the best ones is the nearest one to the Vila Gale. The walk down to the Marina is no more than 15 mins and once you learn some of the shortcuts we discovered, only 10 minutes with a steady pace. The Marina is wonderful and there's loads of great bars and restaurants to try. The Pie & Pickle (Irish Bar) was one of our favs, mainly because of the Rugby coverage whilst the world cup was on and the hospitality shown by the owners Siobhan and Mike was brill. We also had many enjoyable (early morning breakfasts at a little gem of a bar we found in the town 'O Artista'. The bar is situated in a side street near the Tivoli hotel and right next door to McCabe's bar. Well, all I can say is you have to try their cooked breakfast to understand why we kept going back there. The owner and some of the regular ex pat's who frequent the bar were all very sociable and made us feel right at home.

Did some sea fishing with Seafari's which was okay, but I personally had better sport in Fuerturventura a few years ago. Caught three fish, but nothing to write home about. My mate broke his duck and pulled in an angry looking eel.

The Vila Gale is a great hotel with all you need under one roof. The pool and surrounding grounds are something special and the bedrooms are all very well appointed. The shower in our room was absolutely brilliant and you get a great balcony, widescreen TV and comfortable beds. We found the food on offer in the hotel to be both delicious and plentiful every day. Quite frankly, anyone on this website who has moaned about the food must have stayed at a different hotel to us! I'm told the spa is also great, although i didn't use it myself on this vacation.

My only negative comment about this venue was the disinterest shown by several of the hotel bar staff. In particular one of the female bar staff who it seemed would start doing anything but serve a customer, just as soon as you stand at the counter to buy a drink. Having said that, the bar is very large and comfortable, although we found it a little boring because the evening entertainment only consisted of karaoke, which is not really our bag and in any case, we preferred to go out into the town or the Marina.

One thing I can say though is that the reception staff are first class, especially an absolute diamond called Ricardo Rodriguez. Seriously, nothing was too much trouble for him and he should be rewarded for being a great employee if any of the hotel management are reading this review. Ricardo did us a massive favour by phoning round several bars, shops and restaurants we visited in Lagos town to find a bag we had accidentally left behind somewhere. Bag located and taxi booked all within 10 mins. Top bloke Ricardo!

The hotel is perfectly located for anyone on a golfing holiday with one of the best courses around, Palmares, just 1km up the road.

Overall we had a fabulous time in the Vila Gale and would highly recommend it to anyone wanting a terrific base in sunny Lagos.

We visited this hotel right after the high season ended it it was strangely empty. And I mean strangely. It was a very large hotel and property and the extremely long hallways were painted red with black doors and had no windows in them. There were lights near each door to illuminate the hallway. I told my friend, it reminded me of the scene from The Shining a bit. We booked our stay through Orbitz and paid for a "Standard Sea View Room." Due to unfair descriptions from Orbitz, we were told there were no rooms of this type. We were "upgraded" to a Sea View room. Yes, had a direct view of the sea. But also a gas station and railroad tracks. If you stay here, choose the pool view, as you can probably see the ocean as well. The hotel is shaped like a horseshoe. The "concept" of the hotel was fashion. So, there were giant photos of models and fashion sketches throughout the hotel. Also, there were maniquins in glass cases in "high fashion" outfits. Maybe this is a European approach to fashion, but my friend and I found it rather creepy. The breakfast buffet was pretty decent, the dinner one was okay. Dinner buffet cost 20 Euro, in my opinion, not worth it.

Room Tip: Inside view of pool is better than sea view.

The hotel is modern (opened April 2009) and so is the design inside and out - and has a fashion theme. I personally liked the style. We didn't go for a sea-view room and as others have said some of these rooms face the countryside. This was good as it was nice and quiet - and the balcony was in the shade most of the time to escape the hot sun. It has to be said that the balconies are not very private, but not a problem. The room itself was large with a table and a couple of chairs and a decent flat screen TV (which had around 20 or so channels including Sky News, BBC World News & CNN International). It had efficient air con. The rooms and indeed the public areas were kept very clean indeed.

The extensive pool area is great including a covered chill out area, and a pool bar. Prices at the pool bar are reasonable.

Breakfast was excellent and had a huge selection of food. It was the same every day but there was plenty to choose from including good fresh fruit and a hot buffet. It was busy and at times noisy, but it's wasn't unexpected in a hotel that size. We only had the buffet evening meal once, and again there was a good selection. If you are wondering the buffet costs €15 for lunch and €20 for dinner plus drinks (Sept 2011). Drinks and snacks in the bars were very reasonable.

The hotel offers free wifi in public areas, but for me it worked at the pool and also in my room most of the time (although I was above reception) - so check this before paying for the in-room wifi!

There have been comments about the distance from Lagos. The marina is 15 minutes walk (the back gate is operated by you room key, but locked after 10 or 10.30pm) and is on a road with footpath just passing apartment blocks. The actual town centre is another 10 - 15 minutes from there. From the main taxi rank in town it only takes about 5 minutes and costs around €5.

The back gate also allows access to the beach which is a few minutes walk across a road and a not very busy (10 trains a day or so) single track railway line.

Our stay at this marvel of a hotel was UNBELIEVABLE and I'm not exaggerating! This hotel has it all; beautiful decor, great breakfast, the friendliest staff, cleanliness like I've never seen, the most stunning massive swimming pool, great cocktails at great value, quiet area etc etc. And to top it all off, it's sooo close to the gorgeous beach of Meia Preia!! Lagos itself is stunning and the weather was incredible! It was 30degrees and sunny everyday! I cannot compliment this lovely town and gorg hotel enough: stat here!!!!

Stayed here for a long weekend, in a sea view room. The staff here are great! really friendly and helpfull, especially the staff at reception. The rooms were reasonably sized and were really clean, a couple of downsides, firstly there are no coffee making facilities and the balconeys are very open so not much privacy, wasn't too much of a problem when we were there as it wasn't busy at the hotel.

Plenty of parking at the hotel, you can pay to keep your car in the garage for 3 euros per night or keep it in the outside carpark for free.

Food in the hotel was good, nice free breakfasts! we also had dinner here one night at the buffet restaurant, good selection of food.

For the price this is a great hotel.

Whilst I would not rave about Vila Gale, I couldn't knock it. I went for a week's holiday with 7 golfing friends and our impression of this hotel were similar. Our bedroom was a decent size with adequate hanging space, a TV, safe (which was free) but NO tea/coffee making facilities. The hotel was exceptionally clean and the staff were friendly and helpful. Disappointed that there was no evening entertainment but it wasn't far to the town centre. It was 10 minutes walk to the Marina and an extra 5 minutes to the Old Town which was vibrant - plenty going on both in the day and evening. This is a family hotel and there were a number of children but I must say they were all well-behaved. We were only on bed and breakfast and that was OK - nothing wrong with it but I wouldn't say excellent. We did have the buffet on our first evening, which was OK but nothing special cost was 20 euro, but tended to eat out. Linda's Bar on the beach was excellent and very good value- good position and good atmosphere with friendly staff. The beach is fantastic and only two minutes walk through the hotel grounds, over a very quiet road, over a railway that appears unused (never saw one train in the week) and there is this very clean beach that stretches for ever. The hotel pool is one of the largest I have seen with plenty of loungers - never had a problem getting one irrespective of time. All in all, a reasonable choice - nothing bad, nothing brilliant.
