“A Relaxing No Frills Getaway”
Reviewed November 4, 2011

Location: Porto Mos is in the outskirts of Lagos and you would require a car or taxi to take you into town which we did on one occasion to enjoy a Grotto boat tour and a quick stop for wine. So if you prefer to be in town, this would not be a good location for you. It's perfect if you are looking for quiet rest and relaxation.

Restaurant Options: They have their own restaurant that serves mediocre buffet breakfast and dinner. I wouldn't recommend eating there, but upon arrival after a late and long bus ride from Spain, we took advantage of the convenience our first night there. The Beach Cafe offers better food for breakfast, lunch and dinner at a reasonable price at an exceptional beach front location. Tip: you can purchase bottles of wine to enjoy in your room or on the beach. Antonios nearby is another fabulous restaurant that we enjoyed two nights in a row because they served the tastiest fresh fish I think I have ever had.

The Room: Our room was simple but clean. No complaints, but also nothing to really say about it. The best part was the balcony that overlooked the ocean. And the cluster of apartments had their own private pool which was a nice bonus. From our room, we also had a little trail that lead right down to the beach - I am not sure that all the rooms there had that type of easy access to the beach.

Things to do: A lazy day at the beach should definitely be on your list. But if you need to stretch your legs, take an afternoon and enjoy the cliff side trail that starts behind Antonio and leads to another small town where you can enjoy lunch and a bottle of vino verde before heading back. If you go into town, the Grotto boat tour was great. And I would recommend spending an afternoon at one of the lovely beaches in the grotto area. There are other towns along the Algarve to explore by car or public transit - but we opted for more R&R.

Rooms are comfy and had everything we needed. Pet-friendly hotel. The staff is great and very helpful. We called the owner once we arrived in Lagos and she met us and guided us to the property. GPS will not find it, but we got pretty close on our own.

We booked the sea view and it was worth every cent. The beds were comfy and the shower/toilet was normal size. There was a small kitchen and fridge. The food was so amazing in this region that you really don't want to cook at home. The owner told us about some great local dishes and drinks that we sought out and were so grateful to eat and drink away!

There is one secluded small rock beach a little hike down the hill which was gorgeous (like most of the beaches we saw). It's a walk down (so careful with flip flops since some rocks are slippery). We also took a grotto tour in a small boat which was worth every cent of the 10 euros charged per person.

Town center is a drive away, but we saw people walking all the time, everywhere. We really enjoyed ourselves there. I wish we had more time there and will be back as soon as we can get out of work.

Guia has great piri-piri, Monchique has this great restaurant with black pork that is to die for! If you ask around there where the best black pork is, you will be guided to this place (sorry forgot the name).

  • Liked — staff, view, small beaches 10 minutes walk to the water, comfortable rooms, pet-friendly.
  • Disliked — no internet/wifi, distance to town center
