I did a four-week summer language course in Faro in August 2011, staying in the university residence, then my father flew over from England to join me. I had got to know the city quite well and chose this hotel for its price and location and also for the fact that it looks neat and classy. It is probably the best situated three-star hotel in the city, very close to the marina and parks, the historical centre and all the friendly little pedestrian alleys where the shops and cafes and restaurants are. The hotel has a nice dining/cafe area too and there is a great patisserie opposite. I wanted somewhere where my dad (who is nearly 80!) would be comfortable. This hotel did not disappoint, the staff are friendly, the rooms are clean and comfortable. It's a good choice for those who want comfort without blowing the budget. Faro is a laidback city that grows on you as you know it.

Room Tip: Some of the rooms at the back face into another building so ask for one at the front overlooking the...

This was probably one of the best value hotel experiences ever. Travelling alone, I paid 50Euros for a spacious, clean, fresh double room on the 4th floor, with en suite. It had a tiny balcony - but the door allowed a pleasant breeze. Right in the centre, (If you like Faro, which I don't).

Friendly mutli-lingual staff. Bars and restaurants nearby. Wifi which worked. And the best breakfast I have had abroad: everything from fresh fruit salad to full English, all in a buffet.

It is a perfect stop over on the way home before a morning Faro flight. (Airport 7 euro taxi on one occasion, 13 euro on another)

My 3rd time staying at this good value hotel which offers b & b for around €45 a night including breakfast the room which had a double bed with safe tv and shower was more than adequate for my latest visit to Faro. The breakfast in the basement is enough to set oneself up for the day. The rooms are clean and bright and very quite. Enjoyed the excellent Coffee shop across from the hotel called Cinderella where you can enjoy a coffee and cake for around €2. Eating out in this part of Portugal is excellent value with plenty of coffee shops where you can coffee and cake for around €2 none of those inflated Starbucks around here.

My partner and I stayed at this hotel recently for 6 nights. We booked it mainly on price and didn't know much about it before we checked in. In fact, the price was so good that I wasn't really expecting more than a basic hotel with basic service.

It is fair to say that the room we were given was small - and it appears to be the same way with all of their standard rooms, which seem to have just enough room for the double bed, a shower and a desk.

We had stipulated a no smoking room - and as it turned out, all of the rooms are designated as such. We have personal and medical reasons for wanting to be around cigarette smoke and so this stipulation was a deal-breaker as far we were concerned and it is one of the things that attracted us to the hotel.

But, on entering the room the smell of stale cigarette smoke was obvious. It was on the cushions, the curtains and generally in the the whole room. I complained at the front desk and was politely told that there was nothing they could do about it, as the hotel was fully book. I was told that a maid would go up with a bottle of air freshener, though, which should clear it - and I decided to take it up myself to get the job done (and to genuinley save the maid a task).

I had been back in the room less than 5 minutes when my partner took a phone call from the desk. She told me that the manager had been consulted and that we had been offered "the best suite" in the hotel, for the rest of our (quite long) stay at no extra cost. It took us less than 15 minutes to move up to the 5th floor, where we found a room that had a separte sitting room and a bedroom with twin beds and a bath plus shower. We went back and thanked the desk staff for their generosity and enjoyed a wonderful stay. To be fair, the fact that someone was smoking in the room was down to an inconsiderate guest and not the hotel itself, but they handled it with courtesy and to our benefit.

The way our complaint was handled was typical of the way that the desk staff operated throughout our stay. They were interested, patient, friendly and very very willing to make our stay as enjoyable and as comfortable as possible.

Generally, this hotel is a great place to stay, it is well-appointed, clean comfortable and the breakfast is perfectly acceptable - although we did arrive at 9am one morning (breakfast is on from 7.30am to 10.30am) to find that all of the hot food had gone and it was not replaced (the coffee also ran out that morning and the pots stayed empty too) but we didn't experience that on other days.

The hotel is also perfectly situated in the town and it's a few seconds walk to the main shopping areas - and some great restaurants - and then only few minutes on to the old town.

We fully intend to go back - both to Faro and The Hotel Santa Maria - the only difference would be that we would book a suite or superior room next time, as the standards are a bit small. Those who definitely want a double bed (and that was our preference) may find that they are only available in the standard rooms - with twin beds in the superior rooms.

All-in-all a great stay in a lovely little town in a wonderful hotel that didn't break the bank balance.

Room Tip: standard rooms are quite small superior rooms only have twin beds

Good central location, walkable pretty much anywhere you'd want as a tourist in this small city. Worth paying for taxi from station if you have a wheely case - it's not a long walk but the rough cobbles and stone setts of most roads and pavements wreck your wheels!

Very friendly and helpful reception staff. Nice small cafe/cake shop in lobby. Good breakfast - fresh fruit salad; great selection of breads, cakes, pastries; cheese, ham etc. Small hot buffet selection.

Good clean room and bathroom, bed a bit hard for me but husband thought ok (tip: take off the crackly waterproof undersheet). Couldn't get free wifi to work in room, although showing excellent signal strength, but connected ok on another of their networks in the lobby. Deep piled corridor carpet damped down any noise. We had room at back (309) and heard scarcely any noise from inside or out.

Roof terrace offers good views of Ria Formosa and distant sea as well as surrounding city. No facilities (chairs etc) and low walls so keep kids away from edge!

Great value for money, would stay here again for an overnight e.g. for early flight (very quick trip to airport by taxi) but felt we'd pretty much knocked off the sights of Faro in a day.

Room Tip: Rooms at back very quiet but only overlook roofs and yard. We asked for a room at back but town was...

Hotel Santa Maria was in a great location in Faro, which is literally walking distance from the centre and the old town.

The exterior and interior appear to be nice and the room was nice. We were lucky to have the room on the 5th floor and we also had a little balcony for us.

The breakfast was good, plenty of food! Diverse!

The only two issues we had were:

-The wifi (didnt work properly)

-They didnt tidy our room even though we left our sign outside.

Overall is a very good place to stay
