“nice autumn break”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 17, 2013

we visited Faro on a short weekend trip last November to get our minds of our busy daily lives and this hotel turned out to be everything we wished for. Nice and unassuming interior, friendly and relaxed staff and good location made it a great experience for us. Thank you!

This pousada is located on the hills overlooking Faro, in a nice village called Estoi. The main part of the building, inclusive of the reception, the restaurant, several reading rooms and gardens is located an old palace nicely redecorated in style. The rooms are in the new wing, a modern, minimalistic building which included the pools, the spa and the underground garage.

We visited in November, so it was very quiet but with wonderful weather. We stayed in a spacious and very cleverly structured suite. The design is square and minimalistic, but the wood used for the floor and finishing gives a warm feeling.

We used the indoor pool which is small but built with a large glass wall, so as to offer a great view of the landscape. We really enjoyed the experience. We also had dinner once in the restaurant, which is decorated along the same minimalistic, clean lines. The food was good, especially dessert, and the service very attentive.

In fact, service was definitely the best we ever got in a pousada. Obviously the relaxed feeling was helped by the fact that there were very few customers. I do not know what the atmosphere is like during the summer and with a crowd, but I can only say our experience was great.

What I loved about this hotel was the fact that every room had a beautiful view looking out over the countryside. It was converted from the original palace and has kept a lot of the original features especially the gardens which are still being recreated. Breakfast was served on the balcony in glorious sunshine and under umbrellas. Lunch, and dinner weather permitting was also served out there. Stunning to sit outside and see all the lovely lights twinkling in the distance. Service was a bit hit and miss sometimes. Reception staff were good and helpful and welcoming. Pool side you had to wait ages for someone to turn up to serve you... there was no bell or anything to let staff know you were waiting. Food was interesting and the desert was wonderful. A lovely relaxing 3 days to celebrate our anniversary.

We recently spent the night at this Pousada and overall the experience was pleasant enough. We have stayed in quite a few pousadas but this was the first time in Estoi, The building has been converted quite well but everything is very dull. The public rooms have beautiful original features but the furniture is drab and uncomfortable. The bedrooms are situated in a new extension. We paid for a superior room which is one floor down from reception. The corridor leading to it is painted matt white and could do with decorating as it is extremely marked. The whole thing could be livened up with a few paintings or wall hangings and this applies to the bedrooms and dining room.

The bedroom was very roomy, and had the benefit of two armchairs which were not very comfy. There at one time had been a sofa as shown by the marks on the wall but where this had been was only a space. The bed, pillows and linen were fantastic. There was tv, mini bar and the room was very warm and cosy. The bathroom was lovely, sufficient toiletries and lots of hot water, towels and bathrobes.

It was my husband's birthday and a cake was put in our room which was a nice touch. The staff are very pleasant especially Monika on reception and Tiago in the restaurant/bar. However in the afternoon when I wanted to get coffee I had to search for someone to serve me and again when I went to get some wine to go with the lovely cake there was no one on hand. I think this is because the hotel had only around 20 guests but this is often the case at the Pousadas. The service is good when you can find someone.

We dined in and the food was good, plentiful and hot. The wine was expensive but thats the way with hotels. The breakfast the next morning was dire. The buffet consisted of cold meats, fruit, packets of biscuits and a few rolls and croissants. There was some fruit, cereals and yoghurt but overall it was all very tired. There was a hot breakfast on offer which was kept under lids and this was indescribable. I saw nobody touch it and I am not surprised as it looked totally unappealing. You would have had to be starving to eat it and thankfully I was not.

Overall the staff are great when you can find them and this is not their fault as they appear to have to multi task. The rooms are good if in need of decoration and a bit more furniture and the food is good for dinner and naff for breakfast.

Room Tip: Apparently only the superior rooms have double beds and have a better view towards Faro,

A marvellously relaxed Pousada, with the combination of restored fantasy Palacio and up to date minimalist bedrooms. Staff were friendly, relaxed, but efficient, and the cuisine was a delightfully sophisticated take on local dishes. Not somewhere to expect to be rushing about, but ideal to recharge your batteries.

Room Tip: The superior rooms ( level 2) are spacious and with a lovely view

The luxurious Pousada de Estoi, the Estoi Palace, born out of the recovery of an old eighteenth century palace, is located in the village of Estoi only 10 km from Faro. This palace once belonged to Jose Francisco da Silva, Viscount of Estoi, and was opened in 1909. In 1987, it was purchased by the Town Hall of Faro, and in 1977, it was considered a property of Public Interest. A project by architect Goncalo Byrne, this hotel in Faro has a Health Club where you can enjoy a Turkish bath, sauna, tropical showers and heated indoor pool with a whirlpool. In a region with great gastronomic traditions you can find the Visconde restaurant, one of the Algarvian establishments which include fish and fresh seafood. The whole menu is inspired by Portuguese cuisine and exhibits a genuine form of art for good eating. Don't miss out on the deserts from Algarve made with figs and almonds grown locally.
