Arrived in Faro on a Saturday morning in May for a 2 day stay. Went to the tourist office first for maps etc to be told that all the attractions close at 12 or 1 on a Saturday and are also closed on Sundays. So we could only view everything from the outside. That took us all of 10 minutes so we headed for the shopping streets instead. Most shops close around 2 pm, only bigger chain stores like Mango, Zara remained open. All shops were closed on Sunday. So that is something that should really be taken into consideration when planning your dates to visit this town.

Arrived at Faro after a 1.5 hour bus journey. Had no plans, didn't,loolk anything up before we went.
Found the harbour, with one or two Restaurants around it. Found the Old Town via a bell tower arch with a couple of real storks nesting on top.Not a lot of restoration been done so not a lot for tourists to observe or see within the old town. The Cathedral square was quite impressive and was still in the process of being worked on,ie painters and gardeners and workmen all around.
The Cathedral has a small museum upstairs with robes and such like of priests attire in days gone by.
There is a small courtyard which has been freshly painted and is very peaceful with shady trees.

We found the pedestrianised shops area and this was quite varied with pavement cafes and small souvenier shops with some fashion shops.
Some impressive buildings outside of the Old Town and lovely gardens by the Marina.

Wide cobbled streets still with some working industry in some places. The Cathedral with it's bone chapel and panoramic views from the bell tower shouldn't be missed. There are several good bars and restaurants but not too many to spoil the old town atmosphere. Views of many, protected nesting storks were a particular highlight.

Very atmospheric, small and compact - definitely worth a visit. The museam in the old convent is worth looking at.

Great old world charm in the old town, but sadly the whole of Faro has a major problem with grafitti, including the historic walls of the city and main streets. Faro could benefit from a strong political push to stimulate tourism, get rid of the existing grafitti, crack down of offending 'artists' (and possible set them to work painting the benches, lamp-posts etc. to freshen the whole image).
