I visited this restaurant in a group of four in early June 2013. The place is run by chef Martin along with his wife. They are German and speak German, English and Portuguese. The food is carefully prepared by Martin with a passion. He tends to go for food cooked slowly (such as black pork cheek cooked with local herbs on a low heat for five hours). You are made to feel special; - a little like if you were guests in his home. We sat outside towards the back of the place and it got a bit cold, but before we said anything we were provided with rugs to keep us warm so that we could continue to enjoy the location. House wines are very good and excellent value; one of our party said that the house white (served by the glass at €2.20) was really very good indeed.

The place is located a short walk away from the main street of restaurants and bars in Carvoeiro, and makes for a refreshing change from the more rushed and "same old, same old" on the tourist strip. The only slight downside was I thought that the interior room (we sat outside) was a little lacking in atmosphere.

Today, Sunday February 24, Martins Kulinarium offered a buffet that boasted a great variety of specialties that were en vogue in Portugal 400 years ago. Everything was prepared with great care and the ability to create wonderful oriental-mediterranean combinations. Herbs and spices turned every dish into gastronomic dream. Live Fado music completed our culinary experience and we left the place fully satisfied and with the firm intention to come back.

What can I say but GO THERE!
Cavoeiro is a tourisic place, for tourists - you are beeing served tourist food. The choices are about the same (standart) and the prices are about the same (to high for what is served). Everything is loud, noisy and average.

Martins Kulinarium is such a great exception, in all aspects!
It is located a quiet, peaceful corner with a relaxed terrace. The food was extraordinary good and fresh! It is run by German family and Martin, the Chef, even came twice to our table. The one time he brought us flor-de-sal mixed with Burbon Vanilla to sprinkle over the fish!

We had three starters (try the Rosmary-Lemon butter!), 0,5 of wine, a bottle of water.
For the main dish we had a fresh smoked Dorade, and a grilled Robalo, well they gave me two due to their small size. Both fish came with rosmary potatoes and grilled tomatoes from the oven, and also with great kind of steamed, creamy kale, just delicious! For desert we had a dark mousse au chocolat with Cointreau and a long chat with the owners.
We paid 45€ in total! I would have paid him the double price with a smile.

Do yourself a favor and visit this exquisite place when visiting Cavoeiro!

The directions: From Cavoeiro village follow the signs to Benagil, you then drive up the Rua de Farol, this street with many restaurants. Pass the sign to Algar Seco on your right, continues about 100m further. Turn left into the Rua dos Moinhos direction Rocha Brava and Benagil. From there it's about 300-400m to the restaurant, it is on the left side and has a white-yellow terrace.

An earlier discussion had led Martin to prepare what was effectively a buffet for our party of nine, and what a meal it was! Wonderful starters along the lines of tapas, with olives, hummus, and similar, followed by the main course of black pork, lamb and fillet steak with a splendid array of vegetables. Some had dessert! This was like eating Christmas dinner in South Africa, an overabundance of food, plenty of wine, and a hot summer's day. We gratefully accepted Martin's suggestion that we should take some of the food away with us, for later.
