“don't stay at this hotel!!”
Reviewed July 15, 2009

where do I begin.........the hotel is very shabby. Electrics are unsafe. We were promised a sea view and air con - we were given a room with no sea view and no air con. staff not very helpful. We were given an alternative room with air con just in main lounge area and not bedrooms! the fridge broke down and we lost 50 euros of food - the hotel would not accept responsibility and did not privide compensation. Pool area generally run down. room service is poor - toilets not cleaned in the whole 10 days of the trip. All furniture is stained and chipped. Corridors are dark and damp. This is a vey unpleasant place but is in a great location next to the beach. You have been warned!!

This hotel is very dated and in great need of modernisation. On arrival we were greeted with paint flaking from the exterior walls and an empty and flaking water fountain. The rooms are dated and not particularly clean.

We had ants outside our room early in our stay, I reported this to reception - the girl said she was aware of this and gave me a spray. The ants then came inside the room and this is where the hotel showed its true colours. They were up the entrance hall leading to the main room in the apartment, in the bathroom (and always had been) and then I found an army of them in the cupboard - with our clothes and other things. When I went back to reception, the young male just laughed and said there was nothing he could do. We would have to wait.

As there was a problem with ants (not just wth us), I thought the rooms would be cleaned on a regular basis - this was not the case. Our 2 year old son had dropped some crumbs on the floor, these remained there for a number of days with other bits of dirt as the maids did the bare minimum and on some days didn't show at all. I looked under the sofa-bed for a dropped bottle lid and was appalled at the dirt and cobwebs under here. I ended up thowing the whole bottle out as I couldn't give this back.

The bathroom also had cobwebs hanging from the ceiling, the toilet was disgusting (brown at the bottom), the utensils and kitchen area were dirty with only very basic equipment available.

We were moved to another room, but this was not much better. The bath creaked every time you stepped into it like it was about to break and this toilet was similar to the first.

Outside, the children's pool was dirty with all sorts floating in it (as was pointed out to me, unprompted, by another guest - a 4 year old!) The tiled area around the pool kept cracking as water lay on it - you could see where areas had been replaced rather than fixing the whole lot. Two floors of the exterior wall behind the pool had been painted - for brochure photos - the remaining floor above this remained undone with paint flaking off!

The young female receptionist was helpful but an older member of reception staff was always very grumpy and could not recommend or give information about anything in the area. It seemed everything was a hassle for her and she did not want to be there.

The bar is very expensive (€4 for a spirit) and there was only 'entertainment' on twice a week - I expected more in the summer season.

The walkway down to the beach inside the hotel was very eerie and dark with the buzzer system to get in and out not exactly creating a safe atmosphere around the place.

On leaving I asked for a courtesy room as we were to check out at 12.00 and were not being collected to 18.30 - and had a 2 year old to entertain. I was initially told this would be OK, then when I went to get it I was told I would be charged as the room had been cleaned already - this offer was then withdrawn when I aksed how much and I was told no rooms were available at all - be at recepion for 12.00 as there were other people arriving and our room was needed. For a place with 120+ rooms this just capped everything off.

There is a 20 minute walk to the main resort along a main road without a footpath but the eateries (Rocha Mar & Bella Napoli) in Vale Centaines were excellent so we rarely visited Carvoeiro. Helders Bar is also worth a visit for the friendly staff and great choice - we spent most nights there rather than going back to the hotel. The 'area' around the hotel is extremely quiet, consisting of privately owned villas.

The best thing about the hotel - the view over the beach - shame the rest didn't live up to this! We definitely won't be back and won't recommend it to anyone. It is on the cheaper end of the scale but it is still overpriced for what you get!

Let me start by saying, if you don't rent a car, staying in this hotel will be a challenge.
The village is a long and difficult journey. It is not for the elderly or for people with young children. The building is old and the decor is old as well. It suffers from an distinct lack of ventination. Walking through the corridors, you are greeted with a funky smell that permeates throughout the rooms. Let me warn you about internet service. It is available, but not inside your room. You will either have to go in the foyer, where wi-fi scarcely works or use their supplied computer. Their computer is VERY slow. You will have to pay 1 euro for 15 minutes or 2 euros for half an hour in order to use their computer. Therefore, if you are a person on business or absolutely needs to use the internet, do not come to the Colina Sol. If you like to hit balls up and down the tennis court, don't think you get those facilities for free. You will have to cough up 3 euros for half an hour or 6 euros for a whole hour in order to play. However, not all is bad about the hotel. You can have a breakfast buffet in the morning costing 6.50 euros for adults and half price for children. They do have a swimming pool, and the beach is just minutes away. It is very clean and children will enjoy it. Regardless of whether you choose to rent a car or not, the village has numerous souvenir shops and restaurants to go to. Also, there is a grocery store about 10 minutes away where you can buy all the food you need to last you through your vacation. Overall, the Colina Sol is okay. If you plan to stay 2-3 days, then you can bear it out. However, if you plan to vacation in Portugal for 2-3 weeks, I advise you to choose another hotel.

We went in May so still kind of out of season. There must have only been a handfull of other people staying in the hotel. However, no complaints (apart from the extremley noisey people next to our room). Room was clean and spacious with lovely large balcony. Pool area and gardens get sun all day with stunning views of the beaches and cliffs also very well maintained and spotlessly clean. we agree the hotel is slightly away from the resort itself but the 20 min stroll into town is rather nice esp when the weather is good. Would not recommend it for young children however as no footpaths on roadside.
So, All in all a very nice holiday.... can't complain for the price!!! However, prices locally for food and drinks remain high due to the weak pound.

This hotel was very cheap as we went totally out season in April, i think there might have been 6 other guests in what is a gigantic hotel. However the hotel staff were very nice especially the friendly barman. So all in all very hard to judge as very quite, but you really really do need a car to explore the area as there is nothing around the hotel.

We have visited Carvoeiro many times before and also stayed at other parts of the Algarve. We stayed at Colina Sol Apartamentos for 3 weeks (room 606). After booking a 2-bed apartment via our travel comapny, we arrived at Colina Sol and we're sent to a 1-bed apartment, but after the mix-up by reception staff it was recified immediately. So therefore, after viewing a 1-bed apartment, i can honestly say that it is NOT suitable for3/4 sharing, it's very tiny (ideal for 2) but VERY cramped for 3+. After the mix-up was sorted, the 2-bed apartment was FAR more spacious, it had a large kitchen, dining area and 2x bathrooms and a MASSIVE balcony. The kitchen area was adequate, but the cupboards and decor were dated and in need of an upgrade. The only downside was that the 2nd bathroom was very SMALL and the swimming pool was far too TINY for the amount of rooms in the hotel. The beds, however, were very comfortable which is a PLUS, as they usually feel like sleeping on a pile of bricks! The cleanliness of the rooms was excellent and our towels and the rooms were cleaned daily, bed linen changed 2x week. The staff we're very friendly towards us, particularly the restaurant staff "Rui" and "Jose" they we're absolute DIAMONDS! We stayed half-board and if there is anythng that you don't fancy on the buffet style menu-that day, Rui or Jose will see to it that you are catered for! The hotel has a very friendly atmosphere to it and you can choose whether you dress up/down for dinner, it's not a problem and very relaxed. My main PLUS point goes to the view. From our room (606) it is an ABSOLUTELY SPECTACULAR view of Vale Centeanes beach. In all our days left on this planet, myself and my family could NEVER tire of that view! There is also a gate on the ground floor (Piso 1) that leads you straight onto the little drive that meets the beach. To get back into the hotel you just go back to the gate, press the buzzer and tell them your room number. This saves going the long way back. We also had a seagull that we named "Gilbert" visit us at least 2x day. PERFECT! I would reccomend hiring a car, but if you don't fel like exploring or going that far, then Carvoeiro centre is only a short walk down the road and you are pretty much central to everything. If you are self-catering, then the "Intermarche" supermarket is only a short drive away. We had a FANTASTIC holiday and would recommend it anyone.
