Just back from week half board in Colina Sol. We agree with everything said by the last reviewer. The meals in the restaurant were good although chips most nights became boring, also the salad choices became confined to a teaplate size portion but you could have as many as you want. The staff were fantastic especially the two waiters in the restaurant. It was extremely quiet though, so much so that we went to bed every night at about 10pm. Come into the restaurant after 8.30 and you were likely to be the only diners, and the same in the mornings. The time of year may have had a lot to do with it and it certainly didn't spoil our stay. In fact it may have enhanced it not being busy and crowded. The hotel is spotless and well kept. So what if the paint outside is peeling in places.
The room was amazing. We booked a 2 bed apt and it was huge with 2 bathrooms. We were right on the top floor with an amazing view of the beach and sunsets that were out of this world. The lift down to the beach cuts out all the steps and then there is only a short walk to the beach itself which is spotless. The water was cold initially but once you are in you won't want to get out. Not until you are exhausted trying to stand up in the waves. Brilliant fun.
We did hire a car and were glad of it as the hotel is a bit out of the town. Loads to see.

Just returned from our first trip to Portugal and the Colina Sol.
Our party ranged from our 9 month old baby to my parents in their late 60's. We all had a terrific time and the hotel food on the half board basis was second to none. A fish or meat dish every night with 2 starters and a dessert. Breakfast equally as good with english and continental choices on a eat as much as you like basis.
Staff were extremely friendly and all spoke very good english.
They are especially nice to you if you have a baby and all his needs were met.
Rooms are very clean and the furniture is fine.
There is a small selection of shops in the village or a 20 minute walk into Carvoeiro.
The beach is amazing and if you book a sea view room you will never tire of the scenery. Make sure you get the hotel lift to the beach and then you will not have to walk up or down the many steps. The only thing I would say is that to enhance your holiday you must hire a car. We did not do that as there was 8 in our party and it would have cost too much. However the weather was very warm and we managed to entertain ourselves around the beach and the pool which was mostly quiet. We also did loads of walking.
There are local buses and reception can give you timetables to various places.
Also the rumour of the sea being freezing in Portugal was also nonsence as it was fine.
We would have no hesitation in recommending this great hotel and would return there.

Colina Sol Apartments were in a good position with fantastic views and we had a good deal booking a week in a 2 bedroom peak season for £500 for 4 of us. Downside the apartments although clean were old fashioned and definately needed refurb and the outside could do with painting. The biggest worry we would have if our children were young was that some of the balconies had such a low wall i wouldnt relax if i had to take young children to these apartments. Unless your pretty fit the apartments wouldnt be suitable for elderly people as its such a steep walk down to the beach and back, for young people its quite a walk into the Cavoeiro centre although there was a train running back and forth every hour or so. We hired a car the best thing we could have done so we had the opportunity to shop at the large intermache about 3km away and stock up on food so we could eat in for a few meals and only went out for evening meals we noticed how much more expensive eating out was compared to a year ago just a basic meal and 4 drinks for a family of 4 cost us about 60 euros a night and cant really say the food was that good. The kitchen we found well equipped with toaster large fridge coffee maker lots of pots and pans cutlery plates glasses etc. The towels were changed 4 times while we were there but the bedding wasnt changed in the whole week, i found spare sheets in the wardrobe so changed the beds myself. (there was no room service on a sunday and there was a portugese hol on the friday so that could be why). The cafe by the pool was nice and served some nice light snacks at reasonable prices. Lots of sunbeds and we managed to get 4 all the days we were there apart from one day when we went to the pool after 11am so we went to the beach which although packed had a nice atmopshere. There is a large car park so if you hire a car parking is easy. Wasnt keen on the corridoors at night as they had movement sensitive switches on the lighting so when you came out of the lift the corridoors were dark until you started walking up them and if you walked too fast the lights didnt come on at all. The swimming pool was ok not very big but deep and there was a small splash pool for children a couple of swings. The Tv in the room was pretty rubbish only get a couple of chanels that were good enough to see a bit of olympics on but we didnt really spend time in the rooms as the scenery is pretty fantastic in the area around the apartments. We went to the village about 5 minute walk away and had a few meals at the local rest which was ok and handy we drove in to the centre a couple of times but it was so very busy couldnt find anywhere to park. If you want nice views and a hotel on a budget and dont plan to spend much time in the hotel room this is an ideal location especially if you have a car to explore the beautiful coastline. Colina Sol apartments Could be a little gem if they updated furniture and rooms, new tiles in bathroom and general modernisation. We enjoyed our time in the algarve but wouldnt come and stay in the Colina sol again unless it was refurbished completely it was just ok for a week."
Top Tip:"MARINHA BEACH fabulous a must!!!"

I went with my fella April 2008 for one week. We paid just £201 each for hotel/flight/transfer all in the price. We knew it was 3* Self Catering for the money and thought for £201 even if we just holiday on the cheap - at least its some sun and a week away.

But i was pleasantly surprised. Portugal is so much poorer than i imagined and of all the people being dropped off in hovels, we saw the Colina Sol on the approach by bus and said we liked it before they even stopped to throw us out there - we didnt realise it was our hotel!

Its nicely presented, just out of town so not noisy, and has stunning views. Its built up a cliff face right on top of a little cove of beautiful clean beach which was empty day in day out as people couldnt figure out how to get to it i imagine. There's also another cove of beach in the town centre which is obviously busier being nearby the shops.

We had a 1 bed room which was spotless although yes, the furniture was a bit old but for £201 who could complain! You only sleep there not invite mother in laws over for brunch! It was fine for us because we were out most days.

Hotel staff helpful, friendly and pool area nice. Bar snacks are a bit on the naff side so is the restaurant so we avoided it.

Car hire is something like 55 Euro's for 3 days in one of those compact cars like a Daewoo Matiz. Drop off and pick up can be arranged at the hotel - well worth it. Not much in Carvoeiro at all, enough to make do for a week if its baking hot sunshine but otherwise you'll want to travel a bit.

Down the road is Algarve Shopping which is a bit like Freeport in Essex. Designer clearance shops and the only MacDonalds on the island i think.

There's two splash/water parks around nearby but both were closed in April i think.

Taxi's to Albufeira cost us €40 one way so the bus is better but it was two changes in two towns and took hours instead of 30 mins by taxi. Although the price went down to €14 for the two of us. Albufeira isn't bad but still lots of tourist tat about and beggars!

See if you can go when there is a Sand Sculpture Competition on because we saw a guy in Albufeira town practising and its mind boggling amazing! A big comp on the beach would be well worth seeing!

Food in town in Carvoeiro was nice enough, not as cheap as holidays used to be. A dinner for two and two soft drinks each cost us €25-€30. With the weak £ at the mo it was about what you'd pay here.

No real shops in town to buy gifts, only post cards, t-shirts, [-] and drink. So either get it at the airport or get the car out i say.

We had not bad weather for 3-4 days then 2-3 over cast ones so we did get bored but the hotel was just fine and dead clean. Again...for the money you cant complain! Shame about the walk each way or €4.50 in taxi's each way everytime.

Faro airport is a rip off for food so avoid it! Cost us a tenner for chicken and chips which was manky and the size of a Happy Meal. Even a bun and coffee wasn't much cheaper.

To sum up, for £201 you could do a lot lot worse. It was clean, with stunning views, nice beaches, food in town, and nice people - Dutch and English.

If you want 5* for £201 stop kidding yourself and being cheap.

Not recommended for large groups of young people wanting to party, no lively anything, bars or clubs or big boat trips. If you want that go to Albufeira perhaps.

Happy Holidays x

I just read a review by someone who hated Colina Sol and didn't think much of Carvoeiro.I was amazed! We go every year and stay January to March and were there at the same time as the person who wrote the review and didn't recognise anything.
First the apartments. We paid an average £90 a week to be self catering, had maid service 6 days a week, ran the heating whenever we wanted it - and sometimes it is really cold at night at that time of year - and they were roomy and comfortable. I challenge anyone to get better value than that.
The staff at reception are really helpful and problems are dealt with almost immediately by the maintenance or housekeeping staff. I don't know who the earlier reviewer met as at reception as I now know them all and I've never known anyone unhelpful.
The town is obviously quieter in the winter, but there are plenty of restaurants open and the food is great. If you want pubs and clubs, don't go to Carvoeiro in winter - try Albufeira. Carvoeiro is much classier and much prettier. For restaurants I would recommend JotaLita, Marisqueira, Jardim de Farol, Nunos, A Tasca, and loads more whose names I can't remember.
There are lovely places to visit too, like Silves and Monchique. I think you do need a car if you are staying there as it is out of town a bit and quite hilly.
I would recommend both Carvoeiro and Colina Sol to my family and friends and in fact have taken my extended family [ages 3-86 years] there for the last 2 years.
I gather it is somewhat busier in summer, but I don't plan to go then.
This is the first time I have written a review, but I was so appalled by the earlier one and I just want to balance it out.

I stayed at Colina Sol for the 2nd time in February of this year.

They very kindly upgraded, without being asked, us to a 3 bedroom apartment on arrival as they had it available and it meant myself, my sister and my 3 year old son each had a twin bedroom to ourselves

The rooms ARE dated. The furniture isn't modern, and the lack of power points occasionally frustrating- I wished I had remembered to bring a 4 lead extension cable again. Oh and the lights trip if you run the microwave/ kettle and oven together, but you learn to work round that in about 2 days!!

The rooms are huge, but are so varied it seems really strange. I suppose it is to do with the way the hotel is built into the side of a cliff, and them maximising their build potential without creating a solid ugly tower block.

The beach nearby Colina Sol is lovely- although the recent storms accross the Algarve- and much of the rest of Europe- meant the steps were damaged and took a few days to be repaired.

The food is fine in the restaraunt. Not cheap, but reseanable and very tasty. We tended to cook one meal in the apartment and eat out for one, usually down in town.

We had a great holiday experience, and all 4 generations -from my 86 year old grandparents, my algarve wintering parents, my sister and I down to my 3 year old son enoyed our holiday

Colina Sol ISNT 5 star, but then it never pretends it is.
