“Fantastic view (as advertised)”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 11, 2011

Our party of four (two couples) stayed the first week of October. As others say request a sea view room, on floor 3 or 4 - floor two is a little low. We stayed in rooms 423 and 424 which look out a little to the right of straight out 422, 421, 420 etc. would be a little more direct. Reception is on the fifth floor as is the main bar with outside terrace and the (evening) dining room, again with outside terrace. Our rooms were directly below said bar and dining room terraces but there was little noise and no food odours to trouble, however, rooms on the sixth floor above these facilities, if there are any, might suffer. The hotel setting is indeed quite spectacular, perhaps the most appealing aspect of a stay in Carvoeiro. As other reviewers have commented the hotel is a little faded and in need of some TLC but quite okay nonetheless. Clearly the hotel was drawing towards end of season and some facilities were not available, e.g. pool bar but there were advantages in that at the start of our week the low numbers of guests meant that breakfast was served in the fifth floor dining room so we had access to the outside terrace. The hotel filled up later in the week (a wedding party) so the hotel reverted to serving breakfast in the usual fourth floor room which is on the opposite side of the building to the sea, is below ground level so is enclosed and rather dull other than an atrium on one side of the room. The breakfast fare was pretty standard: buffet eggs, bacon, sausages, beans, fruit etc. etc. but quite okay. We were half board and found the "gourmet" restaurant was somewhat less than 4* and gourmet it was not. The soup was always good as were the deserts, the cold/salad starters were unadventurous but we found the main course choice to be very limited: most evenings there were two fish and two meat options, a variety of rice, pasta and potatoes and usually one vegetable - one evening one of the fish options was squid and the vegetable was sprouts!?! curious to say the least. On reflection perhaps B&B might have been a better option, there being quite a number of reasonable restaurants on the hill down to Carvoeiro village. Carvoeiro village is quite small but larger than we expected with plenty of shops selling locally produced items (pottery, slippers (seemingly everywhere) and so on).
A word of caution re "Follow Me! Tours", their estimation of the length of the tour is somewhat conservative because of the number of pick-ups they make, e.g. we booked on a half-day tour to Lagos, Sagres & Cape St Vincent which we were led to believe would be from 1pm to about 6-6.30pm. We were picked up at 1 o'clock and after a rather tedious pick-up tour of Portimao and Pria da Rocha arrived at Lagos at 2.50 to be advised that the last drop-off at the end of the tour (at the Tivoli) would be at about 8 o'clock and that we had an hour at Lagos before moving off again. My wife and I decided to leave the tour, stay at Lagos and taxi back to the Tivoli while my brother and his wife stayed with the tour. The return by taxi took 30 min rather than the 1 hr 50 min the tour took to reach Lagos and my brother did not get back to the Tivoli until 8.35. The tour took in Port da Piedade (15 min to photo the rocks) passed Sagres, spent 15 min at Cape St Vincent (to photo the rocks and the lighthouse) then trawled back, again visiting half the hotels in Portimao/ P da Rocha. If you enjoy riding in a coach for for 6 hrs for 1 1/2 hrs of photo opportunities then this is for you.

Myself & my husband stayed her for a week in September. Our room had a cliff view and was just amazing. Watching the sun set on the ocean and listening to the water lapping against the cliff side while sipping a glass a wine on our balcony, was just heaven. As stated in most of the reviews the hotel is a bit dated, but our room was a good size and extremely clean. There are tea & coffee making facilities, minibar and loads of snacks available in the room, BUT for a price s, so if you a travelling with kids I would hide them straight away! There is a shop 2 minutes down the hill where you can stock up on snacks and drinks. There is wifi available for a daily charge of €9, but you can get it free in a corner coffee shop just down the road that is great for sandwiches and free wifi . There is a little internet hub at reception which is free to use.The breakfast room can be quite busy but it will set you up for the day, juices, breads, cereals, jams, fry up,cold meats & cheese, fresh fruit, omelette & waffle bar,and pastries, the coffee is yum. We ate in the resturant on our first night and the view from the balcony was fantastic, we went a la carte the pork was tender and delicious. The bar area is a bit quite, but we justed stopped here for a night cap most nights and played cards. The pool side resturant has the usual chips, salad, burgers, pasta, pizza. We had lunch here only once and it was grand, as we made our way into the village most days for lunch. Or you can always go to the shop and pick up some lunch for a picnic. The pool side bar makes lovely cocktails but they are expensive. They have a dive centre in the hotel if you are interested in scuba diving, they operate daily divesI can`t remeber how much they charged. You could also rent snorkling gear for €12 a day. The sunlounges are free to use and are plentiful, you get a fresh towel from reception everyday. We stayed in the area overlooking the cliffs and loved it. The little cove down below is an adventure, it is a good few steps down to the bottom but is well worth it.. A big cave with the blow hole is on this little strech. We went down for a swim most days but being sept the water was extremely cold, so we went down for a paddle and to watch the waves. Most reviews haven`t said much about the cove, but we loved it and a nice break from lounging around. Alot of people went on a daily trek up over the cliffs to the top of the cave to look down the blow hole. We aren`t really pool people so we never tried out the pools, they have an indoor pool as well. There is a games room, and a childrens club area, that kept kids entertained. The dive centre also do pool scuba demos that you can get involed in. We went on only one day trip, a boat trip around the coast and went into some fantastic caves, We then stopped off at a private beach for a BBQ and some chill out time, they provided snorkling equipment and beach games to keep you entertained. We really enjoyed this day out (the Ophelia). Resturants: The hotel is located on a hill that runs down to the vilage (turn left) this hill is known as resturant hill....so yes there are loads of resturants in the area. We liked Primavera, pizza and seafood, we went to some of the cafes by the beach for or lunch. A place called Jan does nice wraps, pitta, sandwiches & Salads. We also went to a lovely italian on our 2nd night called Villa Mona, iit is located on a hill that runs above the main street down. But by far best our fav resturant was Ella Ella, it is a small resturant, turn right at the crossroad and just down a bit passed the ATM, the food was fantastic , the service excellent, we went back for a second time we liked it so much, they had some lovely veggie options, Pre-book if you can as they did have to turn people away on both nights as they were full.
So all in all we had a lovely relaxing holiday the Hotel apparently is closing for a few months to refurnish, which it does need, but the staff, cleaniness and location make up for "the Shining" style of decor!

Room Tip: Ask for a Sea View Room, the 3rd floor. The A/C and the birds can keep you awake so bring earplugs i...

Just returned from 1st trip to carvoeiro very good hotel no complaints whatsoever free internet access and printer a good touch. Breakfast good plenty of choice, Room very spacious and clean 3d floor sea view. Definitely worth paying extra for the sea view hotel is in an amazing location on the cliff top with a stair way giving access to what is basically its own private beach(when the tide is out).Sun terrace on the top floor bar is an excellent way to enjoy a drink what a view.10 minute walk to main strip where there is a good choice of restaraunts and bars try bar havana between 6 and 8 for buy one get one free cocktails very good, food has to be Happys (booking essential ) or a great seafood restaraunt called Brumas up hill at side of the black stove bar i never knew tiger prawns could be that big ! Loved carvoeiro and loved the tivoli will be back soon.

Room Tip: 3d floor sea view fantastic.

The good part of this hotel is the views they are stunning, when the coach pulled up at the front of the hotel my heart sank , the hotel from the outside is dirty looking and is lacking any personal touches (ie dead flowers hanging from window boxes out side bedroom windows, after walking into reception I felt things may be getting better, not a brillient reception but the reception staff made up for the lack of ambience, they were so attentive and friendly made you feel at ease straight away, our room was not going to be ready for another 2 hours so we sat on the balcony in the Grotto Bar (their name not ours) and took in the stunning views over the small bay, when we did get to our room (had upgraded to a sea view) were very disappointed with the decor, the hotel is in serious need of refurbishment and as in other reviews asked when this is going to happen and we were told that they had been talking about doing it for the last 5 years but still no sign of it being done this year. You could not fault the cleanliness, but in our room there was a burn hole and tear in the carpet, there were burn holes in the net curtains, bathroom definately needed a good refurb. We only stayed bed and breakfast and so glad we did as we found the food to be of very poor quality and not a lot of choice. Would return to the hotel if it was ever refurb, another guest told us that he had stayed at the hotel 20 years previous and nothing had changed much. There are some great restaurants a few minutes away from the hotel, could be expensive but they were well worth it.

Room Tip: Pay to upgrade to sea view you would be dissappointed in any other room

Have been to this hotel many times over the last 10 years and love it! Great views from the bar terrace just make it a very special place indeed. Mind you the gym could do with a bit of a make over but that's the only negative to speak of. Carvoeiro it'self is one of my favourite places to stay.Highly recommend!!!!

This hotel is definitely one of the best choices in the Algarve region if you want to pay less than 200 euros/night but feel like if you had paid more than that.

I had an early reservation and they gave me a top floor sea view room.
The view was superb (see the photo from my bed and take your own conclusions).

Nice breakfast service and a resort atmosphere, with plenty of activities, a nice pool and a "kind of private beach" (I don't expect these kind of luxuries on my euro trips because I always pay around 100 euros/night)

Carvoeiro's downtown was about 1 km away, with plenty of good restaurants and what seemed to be a live nightlife.

The hotel is also in a good position for day trips to famous and gorgeous beaches, heading both east and west.

All in all, this hotel is a treasure and I hope to be back someday.

Room Tip: 5th floor, sea view with balcony
