From the minute we arrived at VDO I knew we would like the hotel. The staff were so friendly and always willing to help you no matter what your enquiry. They work so hard and you see the same staff every day working day and night. Special thanks to Miguel on reception who was always so kind and accommodating. We had visited in August when there was the apparently 'short staffing period'. However, this didn't affect the service we received at all.

I would agree with some of the reviewers that the pool could be a bit larger, however there were always sun loungers free no matter what time of day it was. The resort was full to capacity whilst we were there, but we would have never known. It was so peaceful and relaxing.

If you are booking a hotel room, request one with a balcony. We were opposite the tennis courts, which was fine, but we didn't have a balcony like some of our neighbours which was disappointing.

Travelling to the town and beaches near by, a taxi or rental car will be required as the resort is quite isolated. Although, it is nice to be away from the hustle and bustle of the town. If you do need a taxi, just ask the staff at reception who are more than happy to call one for you. There is a free shuttle bus in to Carvoeiro twice a day, but you must book this with reception prior to using it so it comes and picks you up!

I would highly recommend hiring a car and travelling to the west coast near Carrapateira, where there is a magnificant beach with an estuary from the river to the sea on the nature reserve. The beach and clarity of the water is breath taking. A must see. Additionally, there was only about 20 people on the long beach - bonus!

All in all VDO is, a deservedly 5 star resort, which I would happily return to in the future.

Room Tip: Request a balcony!

We have just returned from a weeks stay at this hotel. We booked the hotel last minute and we were not disappointed but we did not feel that it had the Wow factor that you would expect from a 5 star hotel. The only reason this hotel does not get full stars is that the menu in the restaurant remained the same for the whole week and was not 5 star quality, the service from the staff in the restaurant was hit and miss, even when quiet, the bedroom didn't have a big enough balcony to sit out on and you could not check in to your room until 4pm ( which meant hanging around all day if you had an early flight from the UK). You definitely need a car, there is nothing within walking distance and it is quite expensive to get a taxi into Carvorairo. The staff were very friendly, there were more than enough sunbeds ( although we did go out of season) and the hotel was spotlessly clean. The air conditioning was fantastic in the bedrooms and the gym and the hotel grounds including the atrium were super! We loved the atrium! Definitely worth a visit and we are very picky travellers!!! If you are a keen golfer, you would be in paradise but the absence of a sea view and not being within walking distance of any beaches the hotel is not really suitable for those who want a laid back 'beach holiday'. To leave the review on a positive note, the hotel was secure and there were ample free parking spaces.

I stayed here for one week from 6-13 September. The staff are extremely polite and friendly and the resort is wonderful.

I really don't know what people have got to complaint about - the swimming pool is a perfect size and in no way small. If you need milk in your room, ask for it. I did and I got it. There may be some staffing issues but these are being addressed and I am not sure what the rush is to get food served at 100 miles an hour when you are on holiday anyway.

While I was there, a little stray cat had adopted the place. He was not doing any harm, yet some of the more uptight guests complained. I have to say that I have no complaints about the cat (particularly as there are all manner of creatures - birds, lizards etc. - that live on the place anyway. I am much more likely to complain about the silly people who make noise at night when they come in and allow their badly behaved children to run around the swimming pool throwing each other in the pool and indeed throwing water at other guests. Enough said.

I would like to thank: Carmen, Sonia, Nelson, Carlos and the wonderful Maria at the Spa who gave me the best leg wax ever! Make sure you look after the kitten!!!!

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the garden, although mine faced the tennis court and was perfect.

We recently returned from a 10 night stay in September. We had a great trip staying in a 1 bed townhouse on a self catering basis. The apartment was spacious and very clean, not always the case with self catering! The kitchen was well equipped and the bedroom, lounge, dining room all beautifully furnished. You definitely need a car here and we enjoyed trying the many fabulous local restaurants in nearby towns/villages. Particularly would recommend Onze (no 11) in carveiro We ate at the hotel on a couple of nights and the food was great but we wouldn't have eaten there every night. The breakfast is pricey and so we only had this on our first morning. Would recommend a trip to Sagres for the day, gorgeous beaches.
The pool area was lovely, always lots of sun loungers and peaceful. I imagine this wouldn't be the case in July or August and so a September break was perfect. Only criticism is the pool is sometimes very cold!
All in all this is a fabulous resort and one we plan to return to. Would definitely recommend!

Room Tip: Self catering in a townhouse so you have total flexibility

We stayed as a family of four for ten nights half board from 15th August 2012 in an apartment. The resort itself is great, but it was apparent a few days in that they had some serious staffing issues as the Head Honcho arrived to rally the troops - we have since been advised that the hotel has just been taken over by new owners. The apartment was great and perfect for our needs, albeit that the wardrobe doors were hanging off when we arrived, but that was immediately remedied by one of their maintenance staff. We were not furnished with an iron or ironing board and when we asked for these facilities we were told that there were insufficient for all apartments and they would provide them if they were available - we did eventually get them delivered to the room. Unfortunately, wi-fi was not avaialble in the rooms and the connection was very poor even at reception. A few issues were breakfast time, by 9.30am it is like rush hour! However, there was plenty to choose from and the staff were really pleasant and helpful, although it was only towards the end of the holiday that we were made aware from another guest table that you could actually have your eggs to order, including omelette choice by asking a member of staff. The pool bar was desperately under-staffed and on one occasion it was just sheer chaoas with only two staff and a sea of dirty tables and no service. The resort is immaculate, with beautiful surrounding landscapes, but we were quite literally drenched on a few occasions on the patio of the apartment when the sprinkler system kicked off late afternoon, but this only took a call to reception and the timer was altered. Considering the majority of the resort is self catering, there is no on-site mini market as found in most resorts of this kind, but there is a mini supermaket 15 minutes walk from the hotel, but really if you plan on shopping you need a car to carry it all back again! The resort is remote and if you want to enjoy the beauty of Portugal and discover all of the beautiful beaches and coves you do need a car and in August you need to pre book as car hire is limited. If you don't mind an hour's drive out, Bordeira is absolutely beautiful and the dolphin trip from Lagos Marina was just amazing with more than 200 wild dolphins swimming around the boat. Despite staying half-board, we ate out half of the time as the restaurant menu was rather limited and became monotonous, but it was great to get out and experience some of the real Portugal. Overall, a great trip, but just a shame they were so short staffed.

Room Tip: If you have a young family, I would request an apartment with pool view as the treck back and forth...

We stayed here for the Bank Holiday weekend in August and it was great. We arrived quite late and the staff were very accommodating trying to get us something to eat if we wanted it.

One bed apartment was very spacious and VERY VERY clean which for me to say is unheard of :) The staff across the whole complex were polite and friendly and definitely one of the biggest plus points. I would definitely recommend this place.

Only downsides were the pool area is not big enough for the size of the place and the Friday night BBQ was dreadful, not enough meat for people and the two BBQs that had been lit were mostly vacant of food, more of an English BBQ than a Portugese one, no piri-piri in sight. But these are not reasons to not stay there again, just advice for future travellers to be prepared for.
